Twotails Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Would it be feasable for a Composition(like some kind of star) to be made from Neodymium, or an alloy of it. Its said to burn with a purple flame (burns at 150C) and may find a small(yet expensive) use in pyrotechnics. I want to know if anyone has ever used, or heard of useing Nd in a composition( I requested a Quote from a company, awaiting there reply, i also asked if they had any scrap Nd, stateing purity and mesh is not an issue) It would be interesting to find that it(in some form) would work in pyro. it would be an interesting thing to play with in the offchance its not too expensive, i wouldent pay more than $30 a lb(with few exeptions) unless of corse it seems like it would work. i would hate to be stuck with a pound of metal i have little use of.
Rogue Chemist Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 It is not stable towards oxygen and atmospheric water over the long term, it oxidizes. I had some powdered Nd that I lost this way. It does seem to work similar to Ti and Zr, giving extremely energetic burning. I once made a fountain with it and BP.
Mumbles Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Really, $30 a pound? Good luck finding that on small quantity. Going price is probably $25 per pound as is in bulk.
Twotails Posted November 28, 2009 Author Posted November 28, 2009 what i was refering to, is i would gladly spend more, but only if it showed it may work. i wouldent want to be stuck paying alot, and find i couldent use it.
Mumbles Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 Your money may be better spent on metals that are known to work, like hafnium.
