usatrapper Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 (edited) Is it possible to buy pre-made stars online? If so please include the link. Edited November 20, 2009 by usatrapper
firetech Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 Actually, thats not true. You can pay for them, but they can't be shipped to you via any public shipping provider. There's a guy on passfire who will do that for you. You should really just make your own.
usatrapper Posted November 20, 2009 Author Posted November 20, 2009 yea ive been making my own.. is just so expensive. I wish there was a website I could go to and order fireworks grade BP and diffrent colored stars. that would be so much easier.
Mumbles Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 I hate to point this out, but the first one exists, but it is far more expensive than making your own. The same with stars, but they can't be shipped, and again they are more expensive. http://www.addictedtoblackpowder.com/http://www.powderinc.com/http://www.trackofthewolf.com/%28S%28cbq3y...&styleid=94http://www.mainepowderhouse.com/catalog.php
Gunzway Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 Doesn't it really just take the kick out of making fireworks? If you're buying the lift and burst as well, you've practically have just bought a dissembled commercial shell. You might as well just buy commercial fireworks and save yourself the effort. As far as I thought, I thought if you bought chemicals in decent quantities, and had some decent priced chemicals, you end up paying less by a small fraction of money compared to commercial (fairly logical as well). Is it not the reward of this hobby to watch a shell go up and burst and to think 'Wow, I completely made that!'. I didn't think 'making my own.. is just so expensive.', it's more so time consuming and essentially time = money. Have you seen other hobbies? Even though we're essentially 'burning our money'; I say we've got it pretty cheap.
Arthur Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 The quirks of UN transport regulations mean that the ingredient chemicals have little transport hazard so most can be shipped simply in firework quantities, and the finished article firework is a (generally retail) item with little transport problem. HOWEVER the part made ingredient products (BP, stars, whistle, flash, etc) are highly regulated for transport. ALSO no two fireworkers (people or companies) share the same formulae exactly or make them the same wayand this is what makes things different by manufacturer. If you find stars for sale, it's likely that they came by the illegal salvaging of the contents of fireworks ordered to be destroyed for regulatory failure. You have no idea what they are made from. they may be safe with BP or need H3 or KP, HOW would you know or check.

You are very right, it would make it alot less fun. this topic should be deleted.
TheSidewinder Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 No reason to delete the topic, since it's informative and accurate. And it may answer the same question for someone else, in the future. 1
dagabu Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 yea ive been making my own.. is just so expensive. I used to agree that it was a lot of money but now that I have found a good source for KNO3, Aluminum, Sulfur and am making my own charcoal, I find that stars are really cheap and making BP is fun and easy. I just came in from the shop where I just made 2000ml of BP slurry for black match/cross match and my cost for the slurry was about $5.00. The string I use was from eBay and that will cost about another $5.00 when it is all done and I will have around 500 pieces of 48 x 3/32" black match to play with. For $10.00, I cant get that kind of fun anywhere else! The best thing is that this is for a teaching/working time on Monday when two other noobs come to the shop and we make the black match together. scarbelly Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 Look through the supplier reviews, click on the ones that make sense for what you're looking for, and compare prices + shipping. There's a lot of great suppliers listed in there.
