gunner1 Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 I see American Pyro Supply has it on sale and I was wondering if it was as good as regular perc. The chineses that is on sale has anti-cake added.
KruseMissile Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 thats what i use and it works fine. I dont think it will matter that much. Its kinda like rubbermakers sulfur and elemental sulfur... there aint a big difference.
Miech Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Chinese free floating potassium perchlorate is said to contain calcium phosphate, which would wash out color. I did notice difference in color when comparing 100% pure Estonian potassium perchlorate with somewhat less pure Polish, so it actually does matter for that application. For whistle, flash and KP it obviously doesn't matter at all.
Sambo Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Actually, whistle performance is affected by the perc used. See Here

I have some older Chi perc that makes a mouse fart squeak at best and will hardly get outta the tube where as the same formula with other perc would Kato on that spindle. I also have some Chi that work great Steve

I also have some Chi that work great Steve I would love some Swedish Perk but it's $2.50 more a pound so I have chosen to stay with Chinese Perk. I don't care about the whistle noise, in fact, I would prefer a silent whistle mix so I could play with them at home. I use almost all of my Perk for salute segments as I like KNO3 stars a lot and have yet to graduate to Perk for stars.D
Ventsi Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 I've got some sugar x-tal K perch, and was wondering if it could hurt to try and recrystallize it. Obviously distilled water and good glassware is a must, the stuff is caking up too, so when I mill it is there I can put in it to make it free flowing other than CaboSil?

You can easily recrystallize KClO4. You'll lose about 5 to 10% based upon technique, but it's definitely do-able for bad or contaminated perc. The clumping is a good sign that the perc is free of additives. I'd personally just get it very dry, mill as needed, dry again (if needed) and put it into a good container. I like heavy plastic bags (not zip-locs), twist-tied firmly, and these go inside a 2.5 or 5.0 gallon paint pail + lid.
Arthur Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 The additives are usually put there to stop caking, so if your perc cakes it's probably pure enough. You can always recrystalise it but if it works what is the need and why lose some in the process. If you need free flowing perc then mill it lightly with about 0.1 - 0.5% cab o sil - that is an inert low density anti cake agent.
gordohigh Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 I've been using the chi anti-cake KClO4 from american Pyro and my colors are very good, at least all of them but blues. In fact, they have been running sales and I just ordered some more. Even though it is anti-caking it still kind of cakes up in the container but easily breaks up in the screening process.
