Skycastlefish Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 I'll soon be making my first small can shells! Until then, I've been studying, asking lots of questions, and visualizing. I'm very interested in color theory and how I can incorporate what I like into 1.25 to 3 in can shells. Here's a paint picture of an effect I'd like to see. http://s205.photobucket.com/albums/bb134/f...pg&newest=1Anyone who has made stars that resemble these hues - please let me know- and construction tips are always awesome! Again, I'm not interested in any shells larger than 3 inches (but feel free to post larger ones for other users.) Better yet, if you like it, and you try it, take a picture for me. Skycastle
KruseMissile Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Your best bet is to make small ball shells, as it is hard to get symmetrical burst with cans(w/o that much experience that is). As for the colored streamers, i have no idea
Seymour Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Coloured streamers - NO. You can definitely mix green and purple stars with gold streamers, but coloured stars have a coloured flame only. You can cheat by mixing thousands of small slow burning microstars in a 'matrix' of a faster burning mix, but for this to work well, you would be talking about each star being 3" in size. So the best you can do for the green and blue/purple is a coloured flame (which is a single point of light in action), but the gold could be a flame or a trail. The white at the centre should be a fairly easy addition by adding quite fine Ti to the burst.
Skycastlefish Posted September 22, 2009 Author Posted September 22, 2009 Coloured streamers - NO.I can make peace with that for the time being. I just love the orange/violet/green over black and white burst. This makes me wonder… What if you- flattened out a relatively thin layer of streamer star composition,Separately flattened out a thicker layer of a compatible colored star mix,Place one on top of the other and cut them as usual?Could this give the illusion of moving color? Most streamers are burning without metal, so they won’t reflect light, right?Skycastle
KruseMissile Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 You would have a white or gold colored streamer. You could also coat orange/green/violet star cores with something like c6, so it would be a gold to color effect(which looks cool especially when you go gold streamer to emerald green).
Seymour Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 The idea of two layers of star composition sounds similar to the concept of married comets. With that you can get effects such as a green star with a silver tail, a blue star with a gold tail, or a red star with a glittering taiil. All good effects, but they do not look like coloured tails. Kruisemissile's suggestion of colour changing stars is a good one. With that you can get very effective results with known techniques.
PyroMan16 Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 I think you should start out a bit simpler and work your way up to that.
Skycastlefish Posted September 23, 2009 Author Posted September 23, 2009 I think you should start out a bit simpler and work your way up to that.I understand. On a different topic I posted my intentions to start with streamers until I get a feel for shells. I'm just unable to make any shells for a while (I live near lots and lots of nice people) so I'm trying to use my time valuably. The only thing I can do right now is dream and learn.
Mumbles Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 I believe people have tried what you describe with the two paties of composition on top of each other. They had problems because the two compositions dry at different rates, and break apart. You m iht want to look into married comets or cavity comets. This may get you where you're headed. It will be a colored head with a tail. The below thread is another one on this topic. You can get a video of what it roughly looks like. http://www.apcforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=3920
