laser200 Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 Ok this may be lame. But this is my Granulated bp. I used the traditional 75/15/10 ratio +4 Dextrin. Charcoal is homemade willow. I am going to try some cottonwood charcoal this week sometime. Any input on the bp would be appreciated. So far I have built some 3" shells and it seems to put them into the air pretty good. Scott
FrankRizzo Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 (edited) Scott, A much more accurate burn rate test is to burn a measured column of powder pressed into a consistently sized (diameter) tube. Open burn tests can often times be unpredicatable based on ambient temperature, pressure, humidity etc. Looks good though! Edited August 27, 2009 by FrankRizzo
laser200 Posted August 27, 2009 Author Posted August 27, 2009 Okie Dokie. Excuse my ignorance but when you say "pressed" in a tube what do you mean? Im willing to try it. Give's me a reason to make a video of me doing that and using my new igniters I made using the nitro cellulose technique...Made some great igniters that go off instantly and flashes and burns good. Wooo Hoooo! And thank for your reply sir.
firetech Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 Thats not lame bp. That's pretty good, especially for only 4 hours of milling. I have a crappy little mill from harbor freight. I have to mill for 24 hours however my bp is superior to most others I have seen. Good luck!
Ralph Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 what they mean by pressing into a tube to test find some tubes which will be the same every time or make some and than press a fixed length each time (like 5cm) and than time the burn time and this will give you a more accurate of determining how fast your black powder is. you can than use this test to determine the ideal mill time (when the increase in speed is minimal over a considerable extra mill time interval) and will also enable you to decide on which wood is the best to use
Mumbles Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 If you're familiar with spolettes, it's the same sort of thing.
FrankRizzo Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 (edited) Right, and they can be used as spolettes as well. I use the 1/4"x2" tubes available from Pyrocreations or Cannonfuse.com. I place a small piece of masking tape over the end of the tube to seal it, and use a nylon-faced hammer to ram enough increments to create a powder column just over 1" in length. My increment measure is an empty .22LR cartridge glued to the end of a thin wooden stick. Each increment should be hit with exactly the same amount of taps with as close to the same amount of force as possible. Then, I use a 1/4" drill bit turned by hand to remove the excess powder until the column is exactly 1" (use a caliper). Remove the tape, use a video camera to record the burn, and count the number of frames it takes from ignition to flame coming out the other end of the tube. I consider my powder to be "lift-worthy" if it burns within a few tenths of a second of 2sec or less. Edited August 28, 2009 by FrankRizzo
PyroMan16 Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Thats pretty good man! Just mill it a bit more and you should have BP that goes "WHOOOSH"
