I'm building a 3" inch shell using flying fish fuse for the effects. I'm planning on coating one end of the fuse in wax (so both ends don't ignite) and the other end in prime. My question is can I use a BP substitute for the prime? I was just going to wet some Hodgon 777 with water and make a slurry to dip the fuses in. I do have 2F and 4F commercial BP but did not want to waste it on priming. I happen to have alot of 777 from my muzzleloading days. I couldn't think of any reason 777 would not work as a primer, but would welcome any input.

It'll work, but don't use water. Do you have access to NC lacquer, or tournament-grade ping-pong balls and some acetone?

The BP substitutes have a higher ignition temp which is why they cannot be used in a flintlock. It might work but won't be as good as BP. You can make a precipitated BP or blender greenmix that will probably be a better prime than 777 and the like.
