AdmiralDonSnider Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 (Sorry if I missed a result in the search) Does anybody know a/the formula to make time rain stars? Time rain kinda combines crackling and glitter. I once saw a formula - don´t remember where - but missed to write it down. I contained cupric oxide as well as Sb2S3 as far as I remember. Thanks!
Arthur Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 http://www.pyroguide.com/index.php?title=C...ing_Micro-stars may offer you a lead.
AdmiralDonSnider Posted June 24, 2009 Author Posted June 24, 2009 As far as I know the time rain effect doesn´t make use of crackling stars embedded in a matrix, but is a composition that burns with glitter flashes and crackling when made into conventional stars.
MilkyJoe Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Yup, sounds like pop glitter to me! Pop GlitterPotassium Nitrate 44.88 Sulfur 14.28 Magnalium, granular, -200 mesh 14 Antimony Trisulfide, Chinese needle 10.5 Charcoal Airfloat 8.84 Copper(II) Oxide, black 4.5 Dextrin 3Source: Passfire
TrueBluePyro Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 (edited) omg, I am soo buying some Antimony Trisulfide and trying this... Edited June 25, 2009 by TrueBluePyro
Swede Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 That does sound cool, combining strobing with noise. I wonder how he came up with 8.84 charcoal instead of 8.8 or 9? Is it that sensitive to proportions? Time to get mixing!
swervedriver Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 (edited) That composition is touchy as hell. Not an easy effect to get right in my experience. You might get lucky though, or just be better at getting it right than I am Amount of sulfur, type of charcoal used, size of your magnalium, etc., etc., lots of tweakage. I never did get the original compostion it to work like that, I considered it a fail and waste of chems. bummer edit: I just wanted to throw this in- If someone knows the trick to getting it to work like those chinese "time rain" stars, I'd love to hear about it. The best I could get was a fast burning, smokey sizzle-crackle effect, not what I'd call loudish pops with a good spray like the chinese effects. Edited June 25, 2009 by swervedriver
AdmiralDonSnider Posted June 25, 2009 Author Posted June 25, 2009 (edited) I think that´s it, yes. The name for the stars seems to explain the term "time rain" I used. It´s a pity that this comp seems to be hard to get right. Maybe you have to use black chinese needle antimony sulphide, not the synthetic greenish material, to make it work. The effect however looks quite pleasing when it works... By the way: are there other similar pop glitter comps around? Edited June 25, 2009 by AdmiralDonSnider
Mumbles Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Thats because the original formula is a glitter, nothing more. People don't seem to grasp that. It is a modification of the formula that has came into use as the crackling thing. Off hand I seem to remember something about upping the sulfur considerably, binding with NC, and using a coarser MgAl.
swervedriver Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 The modified pop glitter tests done by LadyKate is the one I'm referring to. I've tried it using NC, both with and without the dextrin, upping the sulfur, different magnalium, different charcoal, adding the parlon per LK, etc., etc.. Just a fast crackling glitter is all I could come up with, nothing like that time rain stuff. I couldn't grasp it I guess...
psyco_1322 Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Does anyone have a video of this "time rain" stuff? I think pop glitter changes from a gold to a silver depending on the mesh size of magnalium. If you up the sulfur a good bit, you can get it to crackle.
NightHawkInLight Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 Psyco, Looks like a sort of Senko Hanabi sparkler effect.
