Seymour Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 I'll start this thread off with my fireworks from last night. 19mm ID end burner.3" shell.Brocade horsetail4" shell with 'purple' (more like pink??) pistil and a D1 petal that blew blind!4" shell with silver petal and green pistil that blew blind!4" mine containing all sorts.4" brocade shell with a few of the pink/purple stars thrown in too. Filmed from closer by me, and from farther away by my lovely sister.
al93535 Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Wow! those were all quite excellent! Great job, I especially liked the willow type one. That was great, do you care to share the formula for that one? All in all a great set a fireworks! You should be proud of those ones!
ThePyroManiacMan Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Awesome , good job i did really like the rocket, it look like you have some titan in the rocket , am i right?
optimus Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Some really nice stuff there, great horsetail! I liked the purple too, what was the formula?
TheSidewinder Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 That was a great show, Seymour! Looks like the family was suitably impressed, too. Good job!
Seymour Posted March 21, 2009 Author Posted March 21, 2009 Thank you all for your compliments. I especially liked the willow type one. That was great, do you care to share the formula That was by brocade inspired by Dave Buell's Slow Gold formula. However, perhaps due to the Pine charcoal I use for streamer stars, the stars burned fairly fast and did not have that glittering effect I wanted. I added extra Sulfur and some bicarbonate to get it going how I like. All but the Titanium were ball milled for an hour. Pakeha brocade: Charcoal 39%Potassium nitrate 34Sulfur 12Titanium 7Sodium bicarbonate 4Gum Arabic 4 it look like you have some titan in the rocket , am i right? You are! 10-30 mesh sponge. I liked the purple too, what was the formula? Pakeha purple - Fuchsia Potassium perchlorate 47Parlon 14Strontium carbonate 10Copper (II) oxide 9Magnalium (-100 mesh) 8Charcoal 4Sulfur 4Gum Arabic 4
Zmuro Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Really nice horsetail effect. How big ware the brocade and purple stars (nice colour)
Pretty green flame Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGMeei-Melk So happy with it
Zmuro Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Another whistle rocket: 19mm ID Whistle Rocket And 15g FP Header
psyco_1322 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Good shells Seymour. Really like the mines with the delayed shells in there. Homemade bees? Cool rocket and shell you had there PGF. Props to Zmuro's Whistles also. Maybe I will find the video of my whistle I shot the other night and forgot to tape the stick on. It was hot glued, for about 1 second!!!
Seymour Posted March 23, 2009 Author Posted March 23, 2009 Zmuro, that was a very good rocket. What size was the core, and how long was the "delay" segment? The brocade stars were 18mm for the horsetail and 11mm for the final shell. I believe the purple stars were something near 10mm too. PGF, that rocket and it's header were both very nice! What size were each? What size were the stars? Better pearl is a formula I have not yet tried, but seeing that I will be. psyco_1322, the Bees were homemade. They were 19mm I with 4mm vent holes and used BP + 5% MgAl (-100 mesh) and 5% Ti (10-30 mesh).

Better pearl is a formula I have not yet tried, but seeing that I will be. Thanks, the rocket was 20mm ID and 115mm long, core burner. The header was a 2.5" plastic shell, I think the stars were 10mm cut. Still needs a little more flash for a stronger break IMO, even though the effect is pretty nice.
Zmuro Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Here are all the measurements you need: http://www.shrani.si/f/U/Pz/4kXrWAa8/whistle-tool-mere.doc
AdmiralDonSnider Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Great job, all of you. I would like to know more about the insert shells used in Seymour´s bees mine. That effect was really nice and the stars were too. How were these insert shells made?

I would like to know more about the insert shells used in Seymour´s bees mine. That effect was really nice and the stars were too. How were these insert shells made? They were 25mm ID tubes, 100mm long. For simplicity I rammed clay plugs in one end of each, and for the other end I glued a thick card disc (4mm), and then sealed it with masking tape. They were completely filled with 9mm rolled stars( BP + 15% Aluminium- 45µm granular, and bound with 5% Gum Arabic). I also threw in a few nitrate strobes, which I think looked a bit messy and was a mistake. They were side fused with Chinese timefuse (the quality of which is good, the inaccuracy of the timing was due to laziness whilst cutting them on my part), and burst with about one and a half to two teaspoons of standard 70/30 flash using Indian dark flake.
AdmiralDonSnider Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 I see. Quite long these units. What was the wall thickness and which paper did you choose? As you are a member of Pyroguide as far as I remember, you could work the rough guidelines into a tutorial, if you want. If you share some more basic information someone else could also do that.
psyco_1322 Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Here is the video of my 4oz whistle rocket that I totally forgot to tape the stick on in all the excitement to shoot it. I hot glued it on and for to add tape. It just hung in the sky spinning around in a circle until the header went off. Made a neat noise. I did use a piece of blue falling leaves fuse to light it though. 9 seconds/inch is really slow for fuse! http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n3/psyco_1322/th_S4024705.jpg
FrankRizzo Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Not bad! What did you end up using for the catalyst? Copper oxychloride?

As you are a member of Pyroguide as far as I remember, you could work the rough guidelines into a tutorial, if you want. If you share some more basic information someone else could also do that. Wall thickness is 3mm. These are tubes from the textile industry that I pick up for free. I'd say the paper quality is low, though I ram perfectly good rockets from them. I'm not sure that there is really enough to it to necessitate a tutorial. Fill it completely with easy to light, hard stars, pour plenty of flash in the gaps, seal it to prevent the lift lighting it. And you are done! Here is the video of my 4oz whistle rocket that I totally forgot to tape the stick on in all the excitement to shoot it. I hot glued it on and for to add tape. It just hung in the sky spinning around in a circle until the header went off. Made a neat noise. psyco_1322 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 No, that was actually a red iron catalyst in sally fuel. The fuel is actually very similar to what Jerry Muth burns in his 3/8" rockets. I think I missed actually seeing the take off, as I was thinking it was still a little slow, but after watching the video it seemed to be moving pretty good. Still not fast enough though.

FrKoNaLeaSh1010 Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 all of these videos are pretty dam good. Zmuro what is the formula for those willow diadem stars they look amazing.
