Wow, working in a uni lab, congrats, I thought you were rather young?

Tsk Tsk, posting unpublished work on the internet, I know someone who got screwed out of a JACS publication for that reason :o

I'd post my babies, but they are patentable

Some sort of songogashira type polymerization here I assume? I bet the polymers look cool under UV light with all the conjugation.

Well, I'm not really going into details but you would be fairly close on your guesses. ;)

Yeah... I'm 16.

Thats pretty cool holx. I tried making a condenser before but it leaked really bad so I plan on just buying one.

Could I file an aluminum can for pyro uses?
Posted
yeah but I would recommend dumpin the can in some solvent (acetone/xylene/paint thiner/etc) to remove the plastic layering surrounding the Aluminum.

ULTRABUF, I used hotglue to seal all the leaks.just make sure the stuff toughing the inner tube is heat resistant(mine's rubber stoppers. Very simple and effective

Thanks holx, I never thought of hot glue, I was trying teflon tape and that didnt work so I tried caulking it. Didnt work either. Anyways maybe I'll give hot glue a try.

I was at a block party for the 4th, def the best of my life. Amazingly, in the neighborhood, there had to be at least a dozen people with 1.3g, and three times as many with 1.4. Well, one of the neighbors was at the party, and I asked if I can go in garage to snap some fast pics, so this is what I got in 2 minutes.....definite pyro porn :D

Just don't let them put any body part above the mortars... or any other item...

And thats just the sort of things the ATF, CPSC, etc are going to be going after...

Yeah, apparently several people have their licenses there, but can simply give a shit about rules hah. Yeah, and nothing was sticking over the tubes; there was like 3" of blackmatch attached to their quick matches, so it gave them time to run ~30ft or so.

EDIT- And yes, hence why I was extremely vague :D

Man, way to PO the neighbours, but i guess i can't bame you, i mean it's just dogs right so let'm bark a bit, what's the harm in that? i'm glad my neighbours were on their back porch going, ooh, ahh last night to my fireworks, instead of yelling at me ^_^ .

my neighbors dont like em but they just suspect me since my rocket went through their antique stain glass window. but there was soooooo much huge stuff going off around my house no one noticed mine. too bad i could see any of it though :(

Those strobing thunder cakes are pound for pound champs. We did a wall front with 24 of them going off. It looked and sounded like a massive AA front.

I had a bit of a productive night tonight, I ended up making 150g of MgAl. It was a little dirty and still has a tiny bit of salt still on it but I'll wash it again later. I also dried a batch of D1 glitter for some shell I hope to let off next weekend.

I really gotta get a small refractory furnace set up...

P.S. Everyone can look forward to a new 6" spherical shell tutorial... probably before aug 1st. Possibily a 3" and 4" spherical tut too... IDK...

Oh and i have an idea for a gummed kraft tape dispenser.

hmm random... Is a pound of cadmium (99.9% pure) for $20 not including shipping an ok deal?

Well maybe a week and a half ago I build my first aireil shell and now I'm almost done with a two stage rocket. :)

Man, today I got tired of the ignition devices which are unreliable and never works when they are supposed to.

I am of course speaking of matches, lighters and torchlighters (about 5 of mine have failed so far)

So I bought this:

^^^I was thinking the same thing, except I went on the end of overkill. I love my ts4000 though. Just not used to having something so...reliable.

Sweet, i assume it has an auto ignition system. How much did it set you back? I'm thinking of getting one of these.

Yup the little red button sets off the piezo.

I gave about 57$ for it. There was a cheaper model for ~35 however it was a bit bigger and no butan/Propan included ;)

Expensive is always better! (no, not necessarily hehe)

Mind that stuff in Denmark is more expensive than other parts of the world, so you might buy it at a cheaper price.

Well my show was on 7-7-07 and it was pretty nice. This it the fourth year I have done a show around the 4th of july and every year I get another 12-shot rack. The shells I used were really loud, not always a symmetrical break but great looking and sounding. Everything else went pretty well, everything fired and every ignitor worked. All my other shows I rushed everything, so this one I tried to spread things out, over all it worked out pretty well besides some delays waiting for fuses to reach shells and so on. I'm happy with it, I spent about $410.00 and made back $220.00 in donations, first show I actually made money back on. So as promised here are some pictures of the setup, and a video.

Ok I got two questions.

Um does one have to mill flash (I guess its nitrate flash). The ratios are

KNO3....5

Al(I don't know what mesh)....3

sulfur(it says S (subscript 8)).....2

And I saw this on Mythbusters and it was really cool but I don't know the brand of herbicide but they were talking about exploding pants. The setting is 1930's farm in New Zealand. So this herbicide was used to get rid of ragwort.

So i have been doing some research and looked up the same setting and what kind of herbicide was used on Wikipedia. On Wikipedia it said that Sodium chlorate was and still is used as a herbicide and was use back in the day of 1930.

So my question now is... Can Sodium chlorate ignite or explode on impact?
