qwezxc12 Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 I just started a new color formula project based off of benzoates ...snipDeAdFX, Could you post any videos at night? I would be interested to see the colors in terms of brightness and saturation. I have made small batches of Str and Ba Nitrates via double replacement reactions with AN, but AN is exceedingly hard to find in qty without raising flags. I've seen some formulas for blue using copper benzoate, but if reds and greens are possible without Str / Ba Nitrates, that would be a great alternative. Thanks for any additional info...
DeAdFX Posted June 2, 2007 Posted June 2, 2007 Ok I uploaded a video of it on you tube... The comp burns green for a few seconds then goes to a shity yellow/orangish flame. I think the reason for this is that the comp is poorly mixed. Two reasons for this. I accidently added an excess of fuel and under oxidized the mixture. The few seconds this comp burns green it doesn't look as good as my first barium green based off of Barium Nitrate. Either that I might need to bump up the oxidizer a bit or use more/different chlorine donor. A few seconds before the color change the intensity of the green changes. Prehaps if the comp is better mixed the overall light output will be on par with the Ba Nitrate comp. the link is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3CAwQ4QbX4
jacob Posted June 2, 2007 Posted June 2, 2007 dumb.dumb.dumb the movie on this page is weird, stupid, funny and infuriating all at the same time. go figure.

mormanman Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Ok I'm going to put this in the ramdom thread because well its random. Can you make rocket tools out of wood.
_DB_ Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 You sure can, provided that you have access to a wood lathe. They just won't be nearly as durable as metal tooling.
deadman Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 This was actually a better place for your question than where I first saw and replied to it. Come on mormanman you've been here long enough to not pull some newb stunt like this. I wouldn't mind if a mod moved my first post from the "my first rocket" thread into this post. Or just deleted it altogether.
DeAdFX Posted June 8, 2007 Posted June 8, 2007 Sigh.... Looks like I will have to throw in the towel guys. No more pyro from me until I can find a suitable location. See yah...
Pretty green flame Posted June 8, 2007 Posted June 8, 2007 http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=3ea_1177022855 Check this out, at 2:35 starts the interesting part, 9.000.000pounds of Ammonium perc going off in smaller increments.
RUUUUUN Posted June 8, 2007 Posted June 8, 2007 "OOOO that's gonna be loud!" LOL!!! That was hilarious!
deadman Posted June 8, 2007 Posted June 8, 2007 The perchlorate explosions were amazing. I don't think I've ever seen a real shockwave like those on video (or in person, maybe). 3.5 on the richter, that is crazy!
mr.pyro Posted June 8, 2007 Posted June 8, 2007 That Perc plant is a great video.. It was nice to see it researched and explained. That factory getting leveled I never noticed before.

asilentbob Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 If your going to have wooden tools you will likely need access to a lathe to get them nice and straight. After they are made a dip in wood hardener might be beneficial to strengthen them and then perhaps coating them in lacquer of some kind to make them nice and smooth. So i was going to make a bunch of filler material last night... but there was a opossum in my garage and it seemed very tame and confused so i just opened the garage door a bit and left so it could find its own way out without getting scared into hiding in one of the corners... Also i think we might have rats in our garage... again... but yeah i need to hurry up and make filler, mill charcoal, make charcoal stars, and assemble shells like soon... And find a new place to set stuff off... And hopefully ill be helping a guy set up a small display June 22, should be fun and informative. I have been working every other day almost. My friend upgraded the turbo in his car... and i did like 50% of the labor so i might get his old one for helping... so i have been driving around and thinking "hmm i think it would kick in around here and id get there a couple seconds faster, etc." It took us alot longer than estimated for the installation because we kept having problems along the way... so we ended up taking some parts in and out several times... hopefully we could get it alot faster this time...
Mardec Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 Did somebody ever heard of the oppau explosion? Wiki Oppau That must have been one hell of a explosion too.. Losening ammoniumnitrate with dynamite, noobs.. 20000 times and no problem, but see here and lear, play with fire long enough and you will get burned. Here: A picture of the crater.http://k43.pbase.com/o4/23/346823/1/59342295.BASF.jpg
hst45 Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 Don't forget Texas City, April 17, 1947. http://www.texascity-library.org/TCDisaste...ibit/index.html ANFO on a grand scale. Sorry, I can't find video, only still photos.
itwasntme Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 I have discovered a very simple Red, Orange and white forumla.75 Potassium/sodium or strontium nitrate15 Charcoal10 Sulfur20-30 COARSE magnesium Makes a very good red, burns slow and deep colored red. Not washed out, or not in my opinion. With sodium nitrate, it is extremly bright, I made a 1/2 inch star/comet out of it, and added 2 of them as a rocket header, and it lit the park up. With potassium nitrate, its a very good white star, pretty bright too, but not like the sodium nitrate star. I used Magnesium chips, which I got from ebay. I think it is the stuff from skylighter, which they 50/50 with Mg/Al or Mg powders. I havn't tried with aluminum instead of magnesium, but I think it would be washed out. I also havnt tried with barium nitrate, if someone here could try that, and video it, that would be great. I have a video of the sodium nitrate comet/large star. Please ignore my excited friend, kinda embarrasing http://video.tinypic.com/player.php?v=6ap0z85
Pretty green flame Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 I'll try the green as soon as my Mg arrives, still waiting
weknowpyro Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 Those accidents kind of remind of the world war one mine craters i have seen. The picture is off a massive mine set off below the trenches. I went and saw a mine crater about half the size of this in ypres and i remeber reading in a book I had at the time, that it used something like 36,000 tons of guncotton. Which I somehow find very inprobable as the main explosive used in mines was Ammonal in the first world war.
crazyboy25 Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 this is in the random thread becasue its part depression part happiness i just order 3 things from skylighter: aluminum potassium nitrate and rice hulls should have cost me $40 nailed my ass on shipping its gonna cost me $50 to ship the shit. thats why im angry im happy becasue with that and some other stuff i ordered i should start making my very first aerial shell soon (4"). also i wasn't aware how much the government cracked down on firefox until today YIKES. i hope they can get it together and work something out i like them more then skylighter. i just wish pyro was a more accepted and cheap hobby...but what are you gonna do?
optimus Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 Behold the blue strobe http://www.apcforum.net/files/BlueStrobe.jpg
crazyboy25 Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 Behold the blue strobe http://www.apcforum.net/files/BlueStrobe.jpg i don't get it whats that a picture of?
optimus Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 It's a blue strobe pot. I waved the camera around to capture the bursts of flame individually, if you see what I mean...
asilentbob Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 At first glimpse it looked like a strobe pot tied onto a string and spun... but then the flames wouldn't make sense. About to make a bunch more filler stuff...
fight fire with fire Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 Yay school trip to aPGL tomorrow in the isle of wight woooohooo! see you suckers on friday.
