Guys, Finally made my perch, tried to make 7:3 flash with it but nothing happens it just burn nicely. is the Al supposed to be a specific aluminum?

I suppose you're using spherical alu. Use a flake type.

It isn't that I don't have a sense of humour, it's that I don't find recirculating ancient hoax emails verbatim on a message board to be particularly amusing.

Yes. It should be a high mesh flake aluminum. Spherical and greasy -325 flake will merely make an extremely bright white slow burning flare. These aluminums simply don't have the surface area to reach fast enough.

well bummer then, thats exactly what ive got .

would Mg do the trick?

Yes, but it's much more reactive and sensitive. Think you gotta read some flash powder threads before you make it! Too little knowledge and carefullness and it will certainly go wrong!

mr.pyro, I'm jealous. I have wanted a complete O-chem glassware set for years. Alas no free money that doesn't already have particular things it needs to pay for. How did you get the set for so cheap? Estate sale?

Sorry, I had never seen it before and I got a kick out of it. I left it in the original format so people could guess it was a joke instead of being really alarmed.

Hooray for me, I just bought a membership on passfire. :)

What is the reason for only 2 pages of forum?

It keeps the forum loading faster. It used to take a while, and only so many connections at once could be open. When you search, it goes through all the issues since 2001 or whatever.

I've been thinking about this for a while, there is a type of metalurgy(the science of metal and metal pruducts) which is called pwder metalurgy. As you could guess it has to do with using powdered metals at about 400mesh I think, a hydrolic press, and some heat to make metal parts. I was just thinking that this would be great source of various metal powders because to make alloys they just mixe the powders together before pressing. It was just a thought.

This has got to be the best advert this year:

Yes. They aren't particularly useful for spark production, but I've had great success in coloured stars using -600 mesh copper powder.

For a decent blue star I've taken to using:

John Driver's Blue

50% Potassium perchlorate

30% Copper powder

16% Parlon

4% Saran

And for an extremely cheap pale blue star:

(Formula of my own devising)

53% Potassium Nitrate

24% Copper Powder -600mesh

15% PVC Powder

5% Magnesium -80mesh

3% Airfloat charcoal

I have also tried using an ultra fine unknown mesh of high carbon tool steel powder, it makes thousands of VERY tiny branching sparks when 5% is added to a fountain or rocket. It doesn't appear to function very well at all in stars or comets.

Anyone fancy making some Mg/Teflon rockets?

Umphrey, thanks for posting those formulas. The Driver's blue looks very interesting. Do you have any photo/video of the Nitrate blue stars? Are they anything like the Veline blue?

I'll have to ask Ed about that. Just happen to know the AHPRA president.

If anything I'll get some teflon from skylighter and have some fun/go blind.

Yea, Dead FX is right, I got a 19/22 set off ebay. Wish it was 24/40 but for the price it was hard to pass up.

I also got the vacuum pump off ebay.

Real Kryptonite found in Serbia. Well the same formula as given by lex luther in the newest Superman movie anyways.

sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxide

Well it's not green, it's not from another world, and it isn't even radioactive. I guess it's going to be called Jadarite when everything is said and done.

Here's an URL to an article.

Congratulations fredjr! This calls for an honourary salute :D

BigBang, wow, small world eh! I'd be interested to hear if you can find any info on the propellant. Be careful with Teflon/Mg if you do get some. I've heard some nasty stories about the stuff on rec.pyro...

I bought some Teflon a while back and still haven't opened it

Oh so it was him. Wasn't sure until now. And yes, that guy has some crazy ideas, something like this was bound to happen sooner or later.

rec.pyrotechnics is a good resource for data, if you can:

1) Ignore the 'Curmudgeonly Avenger vs. Joe Smith' soap-opera drama, and the like

2) Sift through the chaff

3) Not get your blood pressure elevated on a daily basis listening to utter idiots (Well, thats the internet in general, I suppose)

It's always interesting to see people "learn their lesson" AFTER ignoring reasonable, repeated, strident advice NOT to do what they suggested.

Don't touch the stove.

Don't touch the stove.

Don't touch the stove.

Don't touch the stove.

Don't touch the stove.

Don't touch the stove.

Ow!

Gee, maybe I shouldn't have touched the stove...only in this case, touching the stove brings a visit from the JBTs.
