DeAdFX Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Hmmm... A while back I randomly decided to mix a small amount of KMnO4 and Sodium Percarbonate. I was hoping that I could fuse the two salts and end up with a rather interesting reaction Unfortunatly when I heated the Percarbonate it started popin and a bouncing all over the place and nothing impressive happened.
treelover Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Something really random: Has anyone here made flavoured smoke devices? I know burning cacao will give a distinctive pure-chocolate like smell, really sweet. Could KClO3 or KNO3 be combined with ground cacao or coffee beans or something? Will it still give the same smell as solely burning the feul? Wonder what'd happen if one applied this idea to the favourite export product of Holland, might just try 10 grams or so when my plants have been harvested.
h0lx Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 the THC would probably oxidize and not make it to the smoke this way.
treelover Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Then what about a low temp. burning composition like the ones with coloured smoke? Wouter Visser:Potassium chlorate................................15para-nitroaniline red.............................65Lactose...........................................20Maybe substituting the PN-red by the desired aroma-donor and increasing the amount of KClO3 (for only a small amount of the aroma-donor will be able to sublimate)? Edit: I don't really care about it being a waste, it doesn't cost me a cent. I think it'd be "da (smoke-)bomb" on drunken parties.
aquaman Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 That would be halarious! Your smoke device would be the first to become illegal. You will have hippies coming from all directions! Being more serious: You're probably better off just smoking the "plant". It would be funny, but also a waste.
mr.pyro Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 We used to use additives for RC fuels that would make it smell like a lot of different things, root beer, bubble gum, .... Might want to run a google search for that. I dont know the composition of anything so searching might be helpful.
asilentbob Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 There was some incense cones that were charcoal with oils impregnated in them... a long time ago i crushed up one of those and added it to a little smoker, and i could indeed smell the incense. This was like 4 or 5 years ago though... and i had some sulfur in it too... so yeah the incense was kinda ruined... I think it would be very interesting to add a bit of an incense oil to sulfur-less BP... Would possibly cut down on the dust too... Would be cool as lift or in a rocket! I think that adding a bit more charcoal would help though... Just so their is an excess of fuel. Edit:Damn! Now i want to experiment with this! But i don't have any oils... I guess i could prepare some from the plants i have around the house by solvent extraction though... Wait... no i think my mom might have some oils already! Ok tomorrow ill make some sulfurless BP w/dextrin (M&P ground as my mill is a hassle to clean out and has normal BP dust in it)... then ill add some 25% alc and oil and make some stars... not many. Thinking 55/45 KNO3/C...
h0lx Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Has the chlorate cell thread disappeared? Or was it even started in the new forum? I got a possibility to get an awesome PSU(borrow from teacher and keep it until she forgets, just like I once did with support stands and equipment) and wanted to look up on the topic. On a side note, I noticed on my acetone bottle: manufacturer: APChemicals, Have they founded a company especially for kewls?
asilentbob Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Made 2-3" starmines, one win20 the other gold tremalon. Also made a random 1-3/4" glitter shell... I need to get some pine and then try my hand at some charcoal fire dust stars. BTW 1-3/4" spherical shells minus QM leaders fit quite well in an egg carton for me.
optimus Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Anyone have any ideas about this:? http://www.pyrosociety.org.uk/forum/index....wtopic=2925&hl=
ITCHI Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Anyone have any ideas about this:? http://www.pyrosociety.org.uk/forum/index....wtopic=2925&hl= Not I but the video was fun to watch.
asilentbob Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Wow, that they would even sell all those to the public is really cool. Finely disperced and then ignited Mg? No idea.
Tweetybird88 Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Anyone know about upcoming skylighter sales?
qwezxc12 Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Anyone know about upcoming skylighter sales?Yeah, no kidding. I've been waiting for a 'real' special...not this "free" KNO3...at $4.20/lb no less...what crap. When they had their 33% off sale last December, I drove down for a TON of stuff, including non-shippable items like some Si, Mg, 10 lbs of BaNO3 and 10(!)lbs of -16+30 Ti Sponge...not quite a lifetime supply, but at 5% additional to most formulas, it's gonna last me years. Of course, that won't stop me from buying more if they post another killer sale like that I'm guessing there's NO WAY they'll do one like that until sales languish after the 4th.
asilentbob Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 I think that they will do another fuse sale of sorts or a tube sale... maybe a carbonate sale lol.
Givat Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Just wanted to share with you this Under Water Flare Underwater Flare - Ellern no 36Magnesium 16%Aluminium 12%Barium Sulfate 40%Barium Nitrate 32%Binder: 8 parts linseed oil, 1 part manganese dioxide http://hozt.net/video.php?vid=20070420212008451177.wmv this was 1.2 c"m Dia, 2.5 c"m long flare. with about 0.5 c"m green flare prime. The comp burn very intansly. It's hard to say the light output in the water, you can see in the film some flame burning on top of the water, I guess this won't happen in deeper water.
oriansbelt Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 Well I was getting UDF quallified all morning and half of the afternoon which is nice since once I'm done with all of the training(which I did about half of today) done I'll be able to go out on SAR missions. But the real fun part of today was at the end of the training and we were searching for an ELT the signal which lead us straight through a ravine twice and the second time we had to either crawl through 50 feet of dense poison oak or hike all the way back around to get to the ELT. So we went through the poison oak since it didn't have that may leaves on it yet. I haven't had any reaction to it yet but I hear it can take up to two weeks so I'm gonna be waiting and hoping I'm immune to it. I think the stats are 1:7 are immune so my chances aren't that bad... well if any one is wondering about all the acronyms just ask. ok I'll give some backround and acronym explanation too. I was doing all of this with Civil Air Partol which is a civilian auxiliary of the US Air Force. We conduct 78% of all SAR=Search and Rescue missions in the US. Our job is to find planes that have crashed and no one has any idea where they are. Usually the only indication a plane has crashed is that its ELT=Emergency Location Transmiter goes off and those thing go off alot even when the plane is just fine, a hard landing can trigger them. Satalites(the same one used for weather forcasting) pick up the signal and tells us a general 20 sqare mile area it might or might not be in. We use Direction Finding sticks to home in on the ELT and since they are triggered accidentally so much we need to do UDF=Urban Direction Finding.
pudidotdk Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 Mum just told me the other day that she saw some Willow trees down at a lake pretty close to were I live. I cycled on a few minutes and found that she was right. Grabbed a few sticks of willow and made some charcoal which seems nicely, I yet have to test in BP. Guess where my willow supply is gonna be
Tweetybird88 Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 I took a pound of balsa and made charcoal and got a 2 oz return. Does that sound right?
Umphrey Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 I took a pound of balsa and made charcoal and got a 2 oz return. Does that sound right? Yes, but it sounds like you could of overcooked it a bit. I cook balsa in 500g quantities and typically get 80 grams yield. The longer you cook it the more volatiles are cooked off. From my personal BP tests the best balsa charcoal is between 15% to 20% of the original wood weight. I've managed to cook it down to 5%, but this charcoal made extremely poor BP.

Umphrey Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 oriansbelt:Driver's License PrankThis hoax is over five years old. It wasn't funny then, and it isn't funny now! To anyone else, don't bother clicking anything on the above link, it's just a moronic site propagated by slygreetings. It serves no other purpose than to create alarm and waste your time. mr.pyro Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 I am very pleased. I purchased a full glassware O chem kit with a fractional distillation setup for ~70 bucks and a badass 5 cfm high vacuum pump for ~100 thats worth like 250 at least. Hello WFNA.
