DeAdFX
Well see if you can get PVC powder or some sort of solid chlorinated organic compound. You could make other chlorates from KClO3... Just use whatever is most abudant of course. Base your comps around your chemicals. Thats really lal I can suggest.
ewest
Check out the colored alcohol flames tutorial I posted. I know you don't want to use Methanol, but it might give you some tips on chems for different colors. I've been wondering if they can be mixed to make more colors just like Veline does for his colored stars. Ex, Blue and Red for Purple?
_DB_
This may seem like an odd question, but how badly would a small amount (<1.0g) of fast-burning BP burn you if it combusted on your bare skin? I ask because I saw in a movie once where a guy burnt some BP on a wound to seal it up and I was just curious.
ewest
It would burn enough to blister it pretty badly. It would never work to cauterize a wound, it'd just make it worse.
DeAdFX
Was this in a clint eastwood movie? If I remember correctly clint has this nun woman burn some blackpowder to remove an arrow or something like that.
TheSidewinder
I remember that movie. Ouch. What they did (cauterization) was common in those days, although the preferred method was a hot branding iron laid directly on the wound. Today, of course, we know that the resulting infection from the BURN is probably worse than the infection from the DEBRIS in the wound. As to how bad it would burn you if you ignited bare BP on your skin? 2nd degree burn minimum, most probably 3rd degree. And excruciatingly painful. _DB_
Yeah, I didn't figure it'd turn out too nicely! I think I saw this on some movie called Black Dog or something similar. It's been awhile ago.
RUUUUUN
Rambo also cauterized a wound with some smokeless powder in Rambo 3.

Maybe try some Columbian powdered lift sometime..

h0lx
Hehe, made a nice rocket out of a 2l bottle yesterday. A lighter got fucked up so we were fucking around with the gas and we would put it into a 2l bottle trying to get the right ratio for a fast burn. A friend thought maybe it has thrust so we put it on ground and lit it. It moved for 5 cm. Then I had the idea to boost the thrust by creating a nozzle of some sort. we made a 1cm hole in the cap, screwed it on and lit. When I lit it it took off with a roar and amazing acceleration, flying about 10m and crashing into a wall. It bounced back and landed about 5m away.I have to make a tutorial on that, when I get to use a camcorder.
itwasntme
H0lx, those rockets are fun, aren't they? I used to love them, until the bottles got melted and cooled into odd shaped things. I suggest using a blow torch for it, preferably one with a piezo sparker in it. Just turn the gas on, wait a few seconds, and hit the sparker! h0lx
we tried it outside yesterday, only got 2 launches, because it was cold enough for the gas to stay liquid:P Oh and these are quite safe also, probably the worst thing that could happen is you could burn your fingers when lighting it (use matches not lighter)

I had some 91% isopropyl in a spray bottle for my mini combustion cannons, and put it in my sprite can. I then lit it with a cigarette lighter. That was a HORRIBLE burn. h0lx
which in turn reminds me of when I was about 7. I was playing with a lighter and found a paint can, the kind with a 3cm hole for poring. I put a lighter to the hole and the burning solvent burnt my finger pretty bad, the next day I was handling something sharp(don't rmemeber what) but it peeled the skin right off. Gladly some piece of skin was still holding it so it eventually grew back, no scar, but the finger is less sensitive than the other.
DeAdFX
Hmm compatability question. I was mixing some hexamine and copper sulfate ~5H2O and the hexamine changed colors . It turned slightly orangish but that was about it. I didn't notice any temp increase but the cup I was mixing the stuff in turned slightly flimsy. I think the hexamine might of displaced some of the water on the hydrate. Is this normal? I am not overly concerned as the sulfate ion is rather begnin compared to Perchlorate or Nitrate. h0lx
Damn, another one bites the dust, Another CATO with a rocket, I will have to use shorter core. It flew about 5m, then blew out nozzle, flied about 20m from initial thrust and fell down. You should try these ratios tho 70/25/5 KNO3/C/S, It gives a really nice tail. _Po_
For some reason the other day I asked my mother if she knew what a paulownia looked like. She said we've got a few of them (one or two are dead) growing in the backyard of our other house. They're like weeds there. Think it's worth the trouble of using it for BP? I've only ever used willow and plum.
Mumbles
Hexamine is a bit ammonical. It might have just formed a ligand with the copper, and thus the orange color. For an ammonia-like ligand it is odd that it is orange though. Nitrogen is a high energy ligand, and would tend for things to go toward the blue or violet range. h0lx
is 18" too long for a 2" mortar? I got me a nice tube and cast a plug(kittylitter and plaster mixture works pretty well). Will I need to trim it?
styropyro
I don't really think you can have a too long mortar (under reasonable amounts). The most that could happen will be the shell will go higher because the lift gases will be pushing the shell longer.
FrankRizzo
This girl is my hero: http://www.youtube.com/watch?search=&mode=...d&v=MBqbgwCsXYM Crazy.. Seriously though, she could probably use a psychiatric evaluation. :-(
DeAdFX
hmmm.. where to start.. I had a chance to talk to this really cool girl and I also found somebody willin to ship Barium Nitrate. To bad the nitrate price is a little steep...:/ [ but cheaper than UN]
Swany
Well, I have been working on a Tesla coil. To wind the secondary coil I used a treadmill, about 50 rubber bands, some felt, a screwdriver, and my mother played the part of speed controller.... So, in a week or so, I will have some stuff on that for you people. Hope everyones been having fun.
