Does anyone have the link to that video posted a long time ago that shows the process of making shells? It was a long video( 20 minutes), no talking, and it was set in a chinese factory. It shows the processes of mixing chemicals, star rolling, drying the stars, and pasting the shells.

It was posted in the random thread and I lost it when my hard drive crashed.

I have it, i'll upload it to rapidshare and post the link here.

Here it is, enjoy

I'll hate me for having asked such a dumb question  , but I really want to know, so here we go:

What exactly does CATO mean? I do understand that it is a shortcut for accidently exploding devices but what does it mean verbatim?

Sorry, my English is not good enough to know such "specials" and it seems I can't find the meaning otherwise.

And since I now already outed me as an idiot: Pretty Green Flame, what is the meaning of EMO?

CATO: Catastrophy at take off.

EMO: Don't really have a suitable explanation but they are kids who think that their life is a total mess when in fact there's nothing wrong. They also cut themselves and slash their wrist, they dress in black etc...well that's the best i can explain, maybe someone else can give a few more details.

I got inspired by the sodium yellow powder's bright vivid yellow, so I made a composition. I am still testing it. It burnt with a bright vivid yellow flame. A little too slow for stars, but left little residue. I made a flare from it and it's drying now. If it works fine, I will submit to the composition section.

the composition is:

40-KNO3

2- Paint Al

5 - Na2CO3

5 - S

10 - Dextrin.

The dextrin is as a fuel not as a binder, so don't tell me that I use too much.

Looking at your avatar that is a nice flame :D. Nice and bright. Maybe NaNO3 would be better for this instead of KNO3. BUt then again NaNO3 is very hygroscopic. btw, I'm not saying it's bad, but why use do much dextrin, does it make the flame brighter? Maybe add more Al instead of sulfur or dextrin.

Anyway, nice comp, looking fordwards to it being in the composition section. ;).

Dextrin would produce incandesant carbon as a product, as well as being cheaper, slowing burnrate, amongst other things. Too much Al would make it too bright as well as be expensive. Too much sulfur, well, stability is at stake. It also adds little to the color of the flame.

Do you NEED the aluminum? I dont have any, and don't feel like buying it for one compsition. I might roll it into a long peice of comp. kind of like a peice of cookie dough. Maybe for pink use Strontium nitrate with Potassium nitrate and flour for a slow burning torch thing. I'm going to try it with potassium nitrate/flour 70:30.

Have fun getting the nitrate/flour to ignite ;) . I tried it with the nitrate and I could't get it to ingite, but I didn't prime it or anything. It's pretty hard to get it to go with potassium perchlorate instead of nitrate in the ratio of 60/40 perch/flour but it does make a nice long lasting flame. Oxidizers with flour do make some fun long lasting compositions so it would be cool to color it. I'll give that a try sometime soon with barium and strontium nitrates.

The aluminum will make the star much brighter. You could probably replace it, perhaps with charcoal and still get a yellow. Yellow is a very hard color to mess up. Just make a small 10g batch or so and test if you want.

Is it flake Al or atomised Aluminum? All you say is paint. Mostly I hear of the flake being used, but I was just wondering for clarification.

I tested it in powder form unknown ratio, with corn starch and it lit pretty easily. Corn starch burns buy it self, so maybe use corn starch and it will ignite and burn brighter. I'll try both and post pics.

So i finally got an e-mail back from these people i acted like i was every interested in buying Al/Mg and i got

this Dear Ozzy Osborn,

I'm very happy to hear from you,and I'm very sorry that I didn't answer you in time .the main size about Aluminum Powder and Magnesium Powder of our company is between 10-325 mesh ,and our all production in these size are good of quality.I hope we can have some chance to do business with you.

Waiting for you reply!

Best wishes!

NAN YANG FUSEN MAGNESIUM CO,.LTD

SO where this is going is getting a free 1-2Lb sample for quality inspection/testing what do you guys think?

I cant believe they think that is your real name. I think they will be pissed when you dont but 20,000 metric tonnes after a sample though.

Ok, i just send them an email saying i am interested in purchasing 13 tonnes of eacch and i asked for 1-2Kg sample of each. The email was alot more extensive than this i forgot to cop and paste so i just made it shorter i will keep you guys updated!

13 tonnes? I doubt they will believe that, however you never know ;).

Anyway I just had a fright! I am starting to get into rockets, So today a tried to make a small engine to see if I could get any air. I thought that it would be a failure, I lit it in a pipe and it came flying out and lost control and hit the neighbours house. I think I know what went wrong, the pipe it came out of was to big, as you could see the smoke mark swirling around inside it. And also the nozzle was a bit to the side. Anyway, it is good to know that 1g of my lift can do that! Scary though. I am thinking of joining a rocket club, does anyone know anything about them? I am hoping that I will be able to use chemicals like potassium perchlorate and magnesium dust etc. That would be so exciting, as now my only chems to do with pyro are: Potassium nitrate (running out) Sulfur (running out even more), err, dextrin, and copper dust. Thats it I'm afraid, so I'm hoping the rocket club will be fun.

You launched a rocket out of a pipe with lift powder? BTW with rocket clubs you will most likely use commecial engines in NZ.

The aluminum is flake, IIRC I calculated from the particle dimensions, 200-300 mesh. The good thing about this compo is that it doesen't make much smell. Not like some compos, that make the whole area reek of sulfur. I wet it like BP when granulating, and pressed. Need to try again, with a thin tube. The wffect was killed pretty fast because it burnt inside the tube. It burnt really slow too, good for a gerb or for lighting fuses.

You launched a rocket out of a pipe with lift powder? BTW with rocket clubs you will most likely use commercial engines in NZ.

You must understand that this was not an intelligent thing to do and I know that, also the pipe was about 3 times wider than the rocket (type thing.) And also my lift powder is not ultra good or anything.

About rocket clubs, Using commercial engines isn't that bad I hope. Are they big or small or do they vary? Also at rocket clubs (I find this unlikely) Do people add headers to make the rockets morre interesting? I really hope so. When NCEA finishes I will join. also h0lx, is your comp possible to do without Al, or with less than you say?

My point is why did you launch a rocket from a tube with lift?

Rocket clubs are not firework rockets. The only headers they use are cameras and altitude measuiring devices, also parachutes. Other than that I dont think you are going to get what you want from this club you are looking at. You are in NZ so at 16 you can do a special effects pyro course. Look into that I would reccommend.

Thank you for your fast reply, but If you need sample, please tell me the specification about sample that you request ,and also your detailed address for posting .I'm eager to receive your answer.

I launched it from the tube so it would go up, that may seem like a dumb answer but I'm afraid it's true, next time I try I will tape a kebab stick or something similar to, hopfully make it better, but I will also upgrade nozzle powder etc.

Sorry about double posting I just made something really weird. I mixed Smoke mix KNO3:sucrose(C12H22O11) with MnO2 in the ratio 2:1 and added a bit of dextrin, it isn't fast burning at all and it is useless at everything pretty much, apart from one thing...

I lit it with a fuse and it was very weird! It kind of turned into a flaming black heap that seamed to be imploding, as the burnt stuff got sucked into the middle and unburnt stuff came out. I just thought I'd share something random with you guys, you should try it, although it is a waste, also it makes a lot of smoke.

More seriously, I tried my improved lift powder on it's own and it burnt very well with a plume of smoke coming off, and what's more... It's black!
