styropyro
I've thought about the same thing too. As long as they aren't the glass ones they would probably work if you found an easy way to cut them in half. But some of the plastic ones are pretty brittle and may be hard to cut. But one problem is the walls are pretty thin compared to the shells you can buy. But you could probably just paste the crap out of it. Edit: it looks like maximusg beat me to it
_DB_
I’ve been wanting to get a video camera with the hard dive in it but there too expensive at the moment. The camera I’m using at the moment has a ok quality when you play it on quick time, but when ever I put it on a file-hosting site the video is very grainy. I know exactly what you mean. I have a MiniDV camcorder (uses very small tapes) and the quality is pretty good until uploading. With that camera I'm thinking about purchasing, the quality stays sharp. The Christmas balls may be able to be cut with fine hacksaw blade or maybe even with a dermal, one of the bits for that might do the job.
BigBang
Just so everyone knows, they sell these christmas balls at craft stores. They are thick, clear hemis that are already separated. PGF has them on his site IIRC.
_DB_
I've got the money for that VX2100 right now, but I'm not sure if I want to spend it. I'm trying to save up for.... something. I originally intended on saving up for a vehicle, which really isn't working out. I really hate spending large amounts of money for some reason. So now I think I'm building up funds for those rough times in college! I'd much rather have a MiniDv camera then a hard drive one, because I want to have a copy of every thing I've ever recorded. I suppose you could burn the footage from the HD to a DVD burner though, that is, if you have one like I don't.
rocket
I like being able to copy things straight on to the computer I find it to be a lot easier than messing around with tapes/DVD.I’ve got a few DVD burns so that all good.I guess it just come down to personal preferences. Like you I hate spending large amounts of money especially cash.

That would make a clean cut since it would melt it.
rocket
Yeah that’s a good idea, I’m gunna get some Christmas balls later today so I’ll give it a try.
Chemguy
Or you could use an extremely sharp stanley knife, they can cut through almost anything. The only problem with the red hot paper clip idea is that it would cool down fast, and there would be plastic fumes. But other than that it's a good idea. Mephistos Minion
Make a hot wire cutter. Basically just some thick nichrome (from hot water element thing) streched between a wooden frame attatched to a 12v adapter. We used to use one of these at school, it was like a hot wire bandsaw we used to cut polystyrene, but the health people made us stop because of the fumes. justanotherpyro
The problem with saws is that they make the wierd little shards of plastic come off. Like when you cut paper with a bandsaw. The hot wire idea is a good one and a simple guiding tool would ensure a good cut.
Chemguy
That's a good idea, you could get the heating filament out of a hair drier, waste of a hair drier but put to good use .The health people are annoying aren't they, they ruin all enjoyment and fun . _DB_
Most MiniDV camcorders are digital, or mine is atleast. You can transfer video directly from the camera via USB cord.
Ozzy
Well fuck me im gonna make a Styrofoam cutter cause i have every thing i just never thought of it.
rocket
The hot wire worked very well, it was like a hot knife through plastic. I first tried with a hacksaw but it didn’t work to well it started to crush the ball.I’ve now filled the ball with stars/BP and pasted it, now it just has to dry
Mephistos Minion
WARNING: SHITTY PAINT DIAGRAM INCOMING! Heh, I decided to waste time and draw a little diagram of the guid system I came up with for ghetto wire drop saw. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/mephistosminion/HawtWireCutter.jpg I did warn you all about the shitty diagram. h0lx
Ha, flame me to the bottom of the litosphere, as it is common, if a guy does insanely dangerous stuff! I am making Calcium Pyrotechnic compositions! Well actually I only make small, test amounts and won't use them in devices just light in a small pile. Reports coming soon. Guest Mark_the_pyro
Irrelevant to anything else posted here; But I was watching the science channel show how things are made, and they had a show on the manufacturing of concrete I believe. Anyways, in the plant where everything is made, they had probably a 50ft long ball mill, and about 10 feet tall (not for pyro but grinding rocks). And it said on there they use A TON AND A HALF of grinding media in it. I wasn't really meaning to go anywhere with this, but I thought it was pretty cool. Wiedras
always rolled my tubes with PVA or other glue, but now im trying to use wheat and starch paste as a glue, but my tubes shrank when dried, cause paper got wet when pasting and all tube shranks. with PVA and other there wasnt such a problem. So how to roll with wheat paste?
pa_pyro
Off topic, but I just made some silicon by the method described by Theodore Gray. Pretty neat when the mix hits the acid making lots of small crackles and some fire from the silane and hydrogen. Here is the video. Anyone know any uses for elemental silicon? My little blackish/brown pile of it is almost dry.

Think of all the BP/other stuff you could grind it that! Anyway, I think you could make a photovoltaic cell with the silicon but that has nothing to do with pyro..... I was at a coal powerplant recently. They had a giant room full of extremely large ball mills, for grinding the coal into a pwder for when they 'spray' it into the fire chamber. The milling media was huge, like large lead shotputs. But after a few days they would come out the size of dice and would have to replaced.... Frozentech
I found a pic online of a couple of the mills where I used to work, Red Dog mine. These are SAG (semi autogenous grinding ) mill #1 and #2 there. The use shot put sized balls also, of chrome-manganese steel tho, not lead. http://www.channel6.dk/native/Grabs%20full/AK3-084V.jpg The mill there also uses large conventional ball mills and vertical cyclone mills to grind zinc and lead ore down to talcum powder size, so it can be extracted using flotation. justanotherpyro
Does anyone have the link to that video posted a long time ago that shows the process of making shells? It was a long video( 20 minutes), no talking, and it was set in a chinese factory. It shows the processes of mixing chemicals, star rolling, drying the stars, and pasting the shells. It was posted in the random thread and I lost it when my hard drive crashed.
