Dr.Bodgy
Hi all, I haven't really been on here for some time and just thought I would come and check it out, this new forum doesn't seem as busy as the lat one. Or is that because they cut out a lot of the crap? Any way, I hope everyone is well, I'll be here reading for a while...
TheSidewinder
I’m pretty sure there are no aussie’s that post on the forum that live over Perth way but I think there is on UKR, I know there are a few over there though. However I may be wrong.Well, pass the word to the UKR forum then. I'm trying to organize some sort of get-together for people here, as well as from a couple other (and completely unrelated) forums that I haunt. General plans are: I'll be there from the 18th to the 30th. Oz Day is the 25th, *AND* a Friday this year. The folks I'm going to visit have said that it will be a long weekend holiday, so the city should be packed with party-goers for several days. And hey, you have a whole 3 months to plan for it. M P.S. Maybe I should make a seperate (sticky?) thread for this? If we can get even a few people to show from here, plus the ones that may show from other places, hell we could lay seige to the city. It'd be a UPC mini-convention! I dunno. It's sorta pyro-related, but then again...Mumbles?? Any other Mod?
ULTRABUF
Happy halloween everyone! Did anybody else besides me go trick-or-treating?
itwasntme
Happy halloween everyone! Did anybody else besides me go trick-or-treating? Lol, I didn't go. I sat home on my ass giving out candy to little kids. None of them noticied my poorly carved pumkin with a boric acid green alcohol lamp thing. It was a pretty good hand warmer though. I can say that my holloween sucked.
pa_pyro
I walked around with a younger friend as he went trick-or-treating. There were a few comments about the green flame coming from the pumpkin though. I used a soup can to keep the trimethyl borate in, about half a can burned for an hour. Swany
Hrrrrrm, it seems I was not the only person with the borate ester muse. Great minds think alike, I guess. It was super-cold here and we did not recieve many trick-or-treater people. I did make my negative ion generator-ozone maker portable and strap the whole lot to myself in a nice little display case with other great enviromentalist clothing, and people could press the button to make some ozone and help save the earth! In biology we just played with it for the whole time. My infamy is growing in the school. Oh dear. But, I have had hockey every day at 6 AM, meaning I have to get up much earlier every day as well, in addition to coaching younger children. By the time practice is over and I am leaving the arena, the sun is finally rising.
asilentbob
I went with a few friends to a haunted house thing, oh man, i laughed so hard through the whole thing... Then i was going to go to a party but the booze never arived so i went home... So yeah i only went to the retarded house thing, i feel like i was jipped out of a good night. I tryed mixed boric esters in this little spray bottle, but for some reason it would only make orangeish fireballs. However on pouring it out into a shallow dish and lighting it was a definate green. Oh well...
RUUUUUN
I walked around with a whole bunch of little kids "trick-or-treating"...... RIGHT!!! On a positive note I found one of my teachers abodes. He was a SWAT team leader. He had the web gear and everything
Chemguy
I went to a school halloween fair where I worked in some stall selling some form of sugar to 6 year olds I got $20 though . We live down a driveway so no-one came to trick or treat us, so I didn't do a borate ester, would've been cool though if I did.
ULTRABUF
Yeah, I was walking around town wearing a tank top and red head band. I was going for the Rambo look. I was suprised I didnt get that cold, only my hands did.
styropyro
Yeah I just stayed at home giving out candy to the kids that live where I live. Not much of a turnout where I live, but it was fun scaring my little sister's friend and turning on the fog machine from a remote I had inside when she came up to the door. I would have had a lot more fun if I lived in the city so I could have hooked up my laser's time tunnel machine and shined it through the fog. And because this is the random thread: Does anybody else on here have a Wicked laser or other green laser? I want to see what percentage of the pyro population are laser fanatics
pa_pyro
I have a nice 5mw green laser, in the future I would love to get a phoenix 75mw. At night or in a slightly darkened room you can see the beam of my 5mw.
itwasntme
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7...1244&q=BrainiacThis is OT, but wtf, it's the random thread! Since when is oxygen flammable? Or is the balloon catching fire and the oxygen oxidizing it more than just plain old air would? I never though oxygen would burn by itself, just like KNO3 doesn't burn unless with a fuel and I 'm guessing the same with KCLO3/KCLO4. I'm just learning chemistry, so bear with me! Chemguy
Oxygen doesn't burn, it is either the baloon burning in the oxygen inside like you said, or merely the baloon popping, but that powerful.... I saw this a while ago and it annoyed me. He says that oxygen combusts so I don't know what they are up to.Also, on the alkali metals oneHereThe last one, cesium is actually a depth charge, the cesium didn't explode so they had to use a depth charge, you see some lines coming from the tub, they are detonater wires. It obviously doesn't say this on the show but I read it somewhere on a site interviewing richard hammond.
Swany
They enhance everything. It's quite the paradox: they are touted as wonderful for bringing science to the teenage population, etc. etc; though they do such stupid, kewlish acts not to mention the spreading of misinformation. I suppose it *does* interest kids in science -or at least blowing things up- which leads to such addictions. Worked for me. Those 2 fateful years ago, I suppose I registered at the old APC just over 2 years ago. But I digress. If I were to sell some sodium for anywhere from $15-20 per oz, shipping to the states, would anyone be interested? I could do larger amounts for cheaper, as well, possibly. I just have a lead on a large amount, but I would need to sell off some to dull the pain of the large payment it would be.
styropyro
And one other thing about that video, since when is glass soluble in water? They say at first that the alkali is safely sealed in a glass tube. But then they say that they use " a specially formulated tube that disolves and takes a few seconds to disove." Brainiac has some roots in science, but a lot of it is fake to make the show more entertaining to the people who don't have a clue they are making things up . Swany
Actually, SiO2 is slightly soluable in water. I belive if you take a clean testube, or similar, and crush it to a very fine power, stir in water and heat or something you will observe a pink soln of hydrosilicous acid or whatever it is. Or hydrolysis products of it, gah, I cannot remember how it goes. EDIT: I just supposed they encased it in a shell of some salt.
Kilo_G
And incase anyone missed it in the suppliers section, www.pyrotube.com is open again. Hope I don't get blocked for being a "bot" LOL.
RUUUUUN
That brainiacs thing looks flawed too brisant sounding IMO. Kilo: if it had been the general Chem section you may have.... hehehe, i jsut got a big bagful of candy from my little brothers and sisters.. all chocolate they dont like it or something like that..... *WOOOOT* post 145 *WOOOOOT*
Chemguy
145 posts, what happens? Also on brainiac I find the fact they put dynamite and NC (or so they say) in a microwave with other various explosives and lights quite scary, some k3wls might think that it lookd wicked so they put stuff, eg paint cans in the microwave. Look up on youtube for proof.Actually, SiO2 is slightly soluable in water. I belive if you take a clean testube, or similar, and crush it to a very fine power, stir in water and heat or something you will observe a pink soln of hydrosilicous acid or whatever it is. Or hydrolysis products of it, gah, I cannot remember how it goes. It would have to be so thin glass, and it would be so fragile that picking it up would break it. I agree, it probably is some slightly soluable salt.

_Po_
And because this is the random thread: Does anybody else on here have a Wicked laser or other green laser? I want to see what percentage of the pyro population are laser fanatics I've always wanted a green laser. I was thinking about buying a cheap one from eBay. Those ones that burn through thin plastic would be pretty awesome.
