I was so bored today that I esterified MEG and boric acid...

http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/7969/gfcc7.jpg

Burns very pretty, pure green, no other colors in flame.

The image is pretty noisy because it was done with high shutter speed and ISO 1000

Whats MEG? I tried some denatured alcohol on paper towel rolled in some boric, it was green with blue on the bottem. I'm going to make one for a jack-o-lantern this weekend. Anyone know how to make it pure green?

Is it just me or was there an other topic under "APC Information Database?" I could have sworn that there were 3 topis under it on the main page and now I only see two. Am I imagining things?

MEG is MonoEthyleneGlycol.

I added a spoonful to 10ml and heated until all dissapeared. Bringing to a boil is a good idea.

Oh, anyone organic genius here, that can tell me how far it esterifies, I want to calculate the exact amounts.

will it come to BO3-(CH2-CH2)3-O3B or will the flat structure of BO3 forbid it?

Boric acid, despite having 3 hydrogens, really only protonates once as far as acidity goes. Also, Boric acid, while indeed being planar, has open orbitals above and below the plane, of which it can use to form ligands and bonds and such. Boric Acid is a weird compound, so it is hard to give a definitive answer.

The combonation you have is weird. Due to the spatial restrictions, I doubt it would form the molecule you describe with 3 ethylene glycol groups between two boric acid groups. More than likely it is a single central boric acid group with three radial ethylene glycol's esterfied. Perhaps there could be other borics on the end to form a polymer of sorts, but not in the form you describe.

Good idea...hehe I can see little kids running from a green fireball. :) Unfortunately I've never had success with liquid fireballs. The tube that I use has a 1/2" ID and is 4" tall. Whenever I try to make fireballs with it, the plastic wrap with the flammable liquid inside catches fire and fails to disperse it into a fireball. Instead it shoots a flaming ball of plastic wrap into the air... Any ides to improve my "fireballs", I use BP lift powder for the charge. I might try benzolift to see if the power makes a difference.

I suggest using a larger bore tube and encasing the LIFT charge in a liquid proof plastic wrap and igniting it electrically.

You just pour the volatile liquid mix down the pipe and lower the lift bag in and fire it.

I’ve got the method you described pa-pyro to work, I use a 1” tube and use BP as lift. I use my fastest lift with it and got a small fireball. When I use slower BP I got the flaming plastic ball instead which landed in the garden. <_<

Off topic.

Fireworks are here!!! :D :D :D

Sorry, i'm so happy, but this will probably be the last year over here.

Thanks for the advice, I'll get anx-mas lighter igniter set up.

Oh, and chemguy what do you mean by last year of fireworks? Last commrcial display maybe?

I need some quick help: I have to create a 12v power supply that can provide 1.5 amps max, .8 amps min, out of AA, AAA, C, D or whatever types of batteries and I can get resistors of various values. I have no idea how to work the problem, but I am looking into it. If someone could help me out quickly I would be grateful. :)

EDIT: Neveryoumind. Momentary lapse of reason, I have been helped. Ohms Law --bless mister Ohm-- states that I need a 7 ohm resister, about.

Hot damn I love casting/burning Ammonium Perchlorate composite propellants. Note to self buy bulk AP. The rumble and the sparks get me everytime.

Well, since this is the random thread and there's no other place suitable...

In January, I'm going to Australia! Woohoo!

I get to be there for Australia Day on the 25th.

Fireworks, fireworks, fireworks!! Yahhoooooo!

Anyone here living near Perth? See ya in January. ;)

i have a pink star formula that it is like lancaster chlorate#1 but instead of potassium chlorate it have potassium perchlorate.

it is a good formula or not?

Thanks

Give the formula, and we would be able to better give you an answer. Colors can be very different with just a few percent differences.

Do you mean it is the same as Lancaster #1 but with KClO4 instead of KClO3, or do you mean the formula is similar? To be able to tell you, we need to know this info.

protonates

When you can use this word in a complete sentence you know too much.

Silly science.

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

I’m pretty sure there are no aussie’s that post on the forum that live over Perth way but I think there is on UKR, I know there are a few over there though. However I may be wrong.
