Bug_X Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 I tryed to roll stars for the first time today. It was Chrysanthemum 6 but they become very strange. http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/5180/bild7eb1.jpg I believed that they should be round? What are I doing wrong? Thanks / Bug
Ozzy Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 Sup guys? Any of you know a good place to get 200-300ft of wire for an electrical ignitor? Radio shack is fresh out. What AWG?
Mumbles Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 Thats a fairly common outcome Bug, it's called "spiking". It's caused by some parts absorbing more water than others. It can be solved in 2 ways. Try using some alcohol in the water bottle. It helps to get the water more spread out and absorbed evenly due to the lower surface tension. Another trick is commonly use with charcoal streamers like Chrys. 6. Some say to they arn't properly made unless you do this. After the mix is milled, wet it and granulate it through a window screen(16 mesh) and let it dry. Ball mill again for about an hour. This will result in a powder about 100 mesh. It rolls easier, and takes up water much more evenly. It is also said to give a superior spray of sparks.

It burned nice and slow with golden sparks in powder on a brick. I made cut stars and they're drying. I was told not to mill it as that would make it burn fast. Oh well.
_Po_ Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 Mumbles, take a closer look. It looks more like they're slightly coated cores stuck together in big clumps. In which case, Bug, you have sprayed them a bit too much. Did you use a bowl or nascar roller to make them?

Did you use a bowl or nascar roller to make them? No, it is not cores stuck to each other, the small only contain only starmix. I don´t know what the name is, but here is a picture. http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/2465/starrollerkf3.jpg Thanks everybody / Bug
h0lx Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 I am staring to build a jet and hoping to get 50kg or more thrust out of it to propel a go-kart:) currently doing research on design.. just so you would know:)Also any ideas/pointers will be welcome. I have a kart chassis and a place tro weld and machine so that's not a problem.
joe609 Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 You planing on a simple pulse jet? those reed valve ones you can make are good or you can make valveless ones theyre extermely simple and you can run them of propane.
h0lx Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 right now my bets are on valveless pulse, as there are no moving parts. I also have a "team" now, which is just 2 of my friends helping out. we discussed on the design of the kart for 2 days in school now:)
itwasntme Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Hey man if that is your site, not ot be a dick or anything, but it seems like it is filled with kewls and noobs. You or the owner should try to clean it up, before you know it, it will be like rotteneggs. The way people talk there is shit. I would get some fucking tough moderators on there. I have gotten some good info from your website, tho. Good site.
Chemguy Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Whos site is this, I would like to get some good info, the more the better.
asilentbob Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Just FYI:Sodium nitrate BP meal 85charcoal 10(cocoa husk course)dextrin 5When making cut stars using 25% alcohol solution is wayyy too sticky. Even with the addition of more charcoal is it way to sticky. A word of advice when making test batches of star comps, use much less binder than you think at first, if its not enough just add some more and give it time to dissolve thoughout. 1-2% would probably have been fine for this. On the plus side i should have really hard stars when they finally do dry. Oh and i read in glitter the chemistry and technique that boric acid reacts readily with carbohydrate binders like starch and dextrin to form compounds that are more ionic than the acids its self. So, borated dextrin.
_Po_ Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 I just read an article about more chemicals being taken off the market, or at least they're trying to. Farmers have got the shits again. They're talking about vetinary, industrial, agricultural chemicals which are "security sensitive" and "chemical precursors." Do they realise nearly everything falls under those categories? Are they gonna just shut down all the shops and raise the price of everything left because farmers can't grow high yeild food and fuel prices are so high because they can't do anything crude oil because the chemicals (both used and produced) are "security sensitive?" Side note: In the article Michael Badcock (hahaha) used the word mooting (hahaha).
mr.pyro Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Bug X I had the EXACT same problem when learning how to roll stars for the first couple times. in the old forum, I had a whole thread wtih about 4 pages in different trials and solutions about it.
BigBang Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Happy belated birthday to everyone. I knew I had been forgetting something, missed by 3 days (more thanks to leap year.) Well, this is really to Mr. Yuk, Thugsta, and Mumbles. So sad that one has fallen, the great founder has left, and only Mumbles is still with us.
Mumbles Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Actually, I just spoke to thugsta the other day. He's doing well, but as expected is out of pyro. He's getting a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I spent the better part of a year trying to find him. And thank you bigbang. It's kind of depressing thinking of all the mods and admins we've gone through in all incarnations of the board. Andy I supposeNikaFlappawockaEPMr. YukBlindreeperBlackhawk(I think)SpudgunPyroBoyAndyboyRoosterLil_GuppyNeslerChazAl93535and Myself. Rather odd to look at all those names now, and think I have been a part of this forum for almost 5 years straight now. As for who owns the forum. It is split between Myself, Mr. Yuk, Rooster and Chaz I do believe. Speaking of which, we have to renew the hosting soon.
Pyrohawk Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 Hmmm I remember all of those people except for Flappawocka. I vaguely remember Thugsta, but didn't realize he was ever a mod or admin.
Mumbles Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 Thugsta never was. His accident happened just after we moved to the forum at Xsorbits. January of 2004 I believe. For those un aware of him, he was a very prominent member of the community. In all honesty, he was hands down the next in line for modship. We moved from Xinventions around october of 2003, or at least setup the forum. Myself, Thugsta, Mr. Yuk, Blindreeper, EP, and Nesler were the main ones setting up the forum. I as well as Blindreeper gained modship in November, and unleashed the new forum around the first of the year. Thugsta had his accident very soon after. He was ramming a rocket, and it igniting causing an explosion. In the end he lost a few fingers, and got into some legal trouble. The legal trouble was eventually dropped.
Chemguy Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 It sort of gives the forum an eerie feeling that most of the mods are gone, it's hard to explain.
pa_pyro Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 I read about him last year on the old forum...kinda makes a person hate the media. If I recall right the charges were dropped because a cop tryin to get publucity.
Mumbles Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 Police Chief running for mayor or something like that.
blindreeper Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 It sort of gives the forum an eerie feeling that most of the mods are gone, it's hard to explain.Gone, but not totally gone PS: Is Round Stars & Shells in the 'info pool'
Mephistos Minion Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 Wow, blind is still lurking it seems. Talk about a blast from the past. In other news, I officially hate forces and motion!
Pyrohawk Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Ahhhhh ok I remember that guy now! Yeah I remember hearing about his little rocket mishap. When did I join this place?? Hmmmm....it feels like a long time ago.... I wonder if it says on the old forum? I'm gonna check.
ULTRABUF Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 Are there any extreme Halo fans here? If there is, you may or may not be aware of a couple other Halo games that will be released besides Halo 3. There's gonna be a Halo RTS made by the studio who created Age of Empires, it will be called Halo Wars. You have to watch the trailer to this game, the graphics are so... I dont know, amazing. I nearly soiled myself. If the graphics in the game are as good as the trailer, it will be a game to remember. Also, I guess Peter Jackson is getting into games now, and he is making a Halo game. No info on that one is really out there right now, but with Peter Jackson, it will probably be sweet.
