Zeppelin Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 Does anyone know what the commercially available "smoke bombs" are made of? I belive I can get them in large quntities for cheap.
Frozentech Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 Does anyone know what the commercially available "smoke bombs" are made of? I belive I can get them in large quntities for cheap. Potassium Chlorate, Lactose, and various organic dyes.
Zeppelin Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 Basically I'm just looking for cheaper fuel alternatives. Any ideas? Well I have heard that you can buy denatured ethyl alcohol for cheap. It is relitivly pure too.
d4j0n Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 Yea I was just about to ask for another fuel cause the rubbing alcohol wouldnt catch the fire unless it was in a fine mist (my cheap $1 super soaker only makes a solid clean thin stream of fluid). Oddly enough, the rubbing alcohol caught fire when I poured a stream through an open flame in the sink though... Do I need a jet flame guide light? I'm using a plain butane lighter type flame right now. What's denatured alcohol? By the way, heres the 99 cent kno3 if it's still there: http://cgi.ebay.com/1lbs-potassium-Nitrate...1QQcmdZViewItem
Zeppelin Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 I belive danatured alcohol is ethyl alcohol (the kind you drink) at nearly 100% purity, but with an ingredient that makes you throw it up it you drink it. Your rubbing alcohol if probaly not catching on fire because it isnt pure enough. If you warm it up before it goes in the tank, it may burn when you fire it. My 60% isotropyl alcohol wont burn on it's own until it is warm. Only if gasoline wasnt so corrosive
Swany Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 Basically. The denaturant is what makes it undrinkable, here in the states, it tends to be methyl alcohol, which works fine for us. Mine quotes 96% EtOH and 4% MeOH. I think I read it wrong somehow, because if you drink methanol, the antidoteis ethanol. Either way, it makes a good fuel, if it doesn't dissove stuff you dont want it to. EDIT: And, happy birthday PGF!!!

I'm sure if u went to a art store and explained it they would know what your talking about.
Pretty green flame Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 Thanks for that swany.Got a cool gift today, a zippo lighter, it's sooo cool, i think i spent 3hours playing with it. Very awesome.
Swany Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 Zippo's are wonderful fun. Now all you need to do is fill it with methyl borate and use that, so then you really do have pretty green flames. I am in the process of constructing a pneumatic potato cannon using a solenoid valve from a sprinkler. I think I'm doing it right, but.... well, if it works, great. If not, I'll beg for help. EDIT: Nevermind what I said, it works, and wonderfully, at that.
justanotherpyro Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 Holy hell I missed a lot. Solenoid operated pneumatics work absolutely wonderfully. It gives it the feel of a real gun, pulling the trigger and all.
dragonman586 Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 Does anyone here paintball? Because I have a question. The 20 oz bottles of CO2, how much psi of pressure does it put out when you take a shot?
RUUUUUN Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 It depends on what velocity your gun is shooting at, what gun you have, the size of your barrel (believe it or not that makes a difference), whether you have an expansion chamber or not, and several other factors, but the CO2 tank produces ~800 PSI.
Swany Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 Yeah. Generally, you want a marker (gun) that operates on lower pressures. Compressed air runs at about 3000psi, but the regulator puts it down to 100-200psi for most high-end markers. Unregulated/unexpanded, you will be putting out 800psi per shot and a lot of snow. Get an expansion chamber, as this will make your shots consistant and save CO2. What type of marker are you using?
Givat Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 I'm looking for a site I once saw,This site sell's ball mill, star roller, press, star sizer (show a picture of the star sizer with wood balls). It got black background if I remember correctly. Any one know this site maybe and can give me a link?
Mumbles Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 Well, it was hobby fireworks. It seems they changed to more of a ceramics company. They definatly pussied out. I don't see the presses, star rollers, or star sizers anymore. http://www.hobbyfireworks.com/

Anybody on here ever made CO2 cars?? We did in my woodshop class. We just made these race cars howevor we wanted to and drilled a CO2 cartridge sized hole in the back... We would load the cartridge in run a line through hooks on the bottom. Then my teacher had made a fancy gizmo to puncture the end of the CO2 with the flip of a button and it did two cars at a time. We raced them in the gym.....its a blast!!
PyroPicasso Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 We made those in 7th grade I was the champion, I think I still have mine around here somewhere. Edit here is a pic of mine co2 racer
PyroJoe Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Everybody make sure to watch Mythbusters this wednesday! New episode, something about "exploding" pants and if it is possible to paint the walls of a house with explosives such as nitroglycerin and detonate them. Should be very interesting. I going to record this one for sure.
justanotherpyro Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Damnit I hate not having cable . All the make up school work begins tomorow. Being gone for a week is a bitch on the homework.
RUUUUUN Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 My little bro had to make a CO2 car and launcher, I looked at it started to give a suggestion about how to use the mousetrap as a launcher and a trigger at the same time to give it more launch velocity and he said "NO, if you even TOUCH it it will explode when I hit the button, get out of here!!!!"
dragonman586 Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 I dont want to know for paintballing. I wanted to know because I wanted to make a bb or airsoft machine gun. There are plenty of plans out there but they are all powered by huge air compressors. I want to be able to take these things around. Now would anybody here know how to regulate these things to say 250-300 psi? I'm not well versed on the super doohikies that can do this but if one of you could just give me a name and maybe a cheap location to buy them I'd be happy. I tried looking on ebay for a co2 regulator but all I turned up was expansion chambers. And remote lines. Edit: Does anyone know anything about flashcotton? Or Flash paper.
RUUUUUN Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 a regulator for a paintball gun will lower the PSI to around 400PSI, if you can make that work then you can buy some here http://www.xpaintball.com/foregrips.html and here http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?c...tors&category0= I think Flash cotton and flash paper are both Nitrocellulose Couldn't you take a remote line and just slow down the output of gas, by not opening the valve as far? It would probably need some time to "recharge" after each shot. An expansion chamber also acts as a regulator, it slows your ball down by giving the CO2 an area to expand, and gives you a more consistent velocity.
Zeppelin Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Random question: Why does this flash?Weirdness Backround info: This is from february I think, I was looking through my old videos and found this. It is a kno3\sugar smoke bomb with a little bit of corn starch and charcoal (my buddy made it). I was wondering why this flashes right after the lid is sealed? And yes, we were dumbasses. Edit: link fixed
Guest pyrokid00000 Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 My neighbor is really pissing me off. He came out last night and bitched about the flash my black powder made. Im afraid hes going to get the police involved. I was just wondering what the cops can nail you for. Obviously salutes and big stuff like that. Can they nail you for having the chemials and supplys for making pyrotechnics?
aquaman Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 It depends on where you live to what they can get you for but they can probably nail you for making BP, and the fireworks. I don't think possessing the chemicals is illegal as some have other uses other than pyro (pottery?). It's when you mix them to make certain compounds that make them illegal. But since I've never got caught I really have no idea what they could nail you for. My guess would be possession and manufacture of illegal fireworks?
