Star_Roller
i could ball mill prolly 10 pounds of BP at one time if i went and made the jar for it mine prolly only goes to about 6-7 pounds right nowand well a tread mill is the best ball mill someone could have.No one can argue if you have used one :-)
Swany
I could mill well over a hundred pounds of BP, if I were so inclined. I am being forced to clean my lab this week, so I will take pictures of my lab and my ginormous mill. Not actually for pyro, but I could make it work.... oh yes... Guest pyrokid00000
I just picked this ball mill up off ebay for $21.00. Do you guys think its a good deal? Does it look alright for pyro use? Its new and unused still in the box.
aquaman
It looks like the ball mill that you can get at harbor freight (that's where I got mine $29.99) and it works fine. It can mill about 400g of BP in about twelve hours. That's 200g in each barrel. BTW you might want to get about 10 stronger belts off ebay as the stock ones don't last long. I use a modified tread mill, and I love it. If I wanted to go through the effort I could probably mill 3 drums with 25 lbs of BP each no sweat. But who needs/wants that much BP at one time . My 700 gram batches done in 48 hours does me just fine.
Guest pyrokid00000
I just realized the shipping on this ball mill is 28 dollars. I would have bought this ball mill at harbor frieght but the closest store near me is 62 miles away. But i guess with the price of gas at $2.79 a gallon, and me owning an suv. Im pretty much screwed. The government sucks.
Mumbles
The new mill: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v137/Mumbles/ec2e7a9a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v137/Mumbles/P1010047.jpg Apparantly we fried all the outlets in the garage which is always fun. The motor actually does work. The only thing wrong with it is the 2x10 I used for the shelf and the top surface are warped. One of the legs doesn't touch the ground. Yes, it is the warping and not me, all the legs are exactly 31" long. I'll have to attach some wood to the bottom of the one leg. Also I messed up during placement of the shelf. Where the top of the shelf is, is where the bottom should be. I'll either move the shelf, or just put some boosters on the motor.
Mephistos Minion
Lawl, got a song by Mortal Decay " Decomposed With Nitric Acid" made me chuckle. Mumbles is that a wooden dowel for the roller?
Mumbles
It is. The local 1" metal rod is a tad too big for my bearings. It shouldn't be a problem though, it could take the force of at least 2 jars. I want to see if I can get it to stick well with just rubber on the barrel, so I don't have to put it over the wood dowels. If I ever upgrade, I don't want to have to use new tubing. justanotherpyro
Something interesting happened. I made some cut stars with this compositon and overnight as they were drying they puffed up and didn't get hard. They just turned into a powder when I handled them. Drying time was definately not the problem, they just won't get hard . Maybe I'll try more dextrin after I get back. Mumbles
My best advice would be to add 5% dextrin to the star. I don't think you'll get enough binder otherwise. 5% would be 3.25g
optimus
Does anyone have any idea where Chaz has gotten to recently?
Mephistos Minion
I have also noticed a lack of Chaz in my daily reading but I have spoken to him on msn within the last 18 hours. He is having alot of his time stolen by "A levels" which I assume are some kind of school certification. Has anyone used chlorowax? PVC substitute form DP. I am looking at ordering like 5lbs of it so I have some kind of Cl donor. How does it perform as opposed to PVC?
runningawaypyro
Ok so I have a problem. I'v always boiled down my h2o2 and my mekp seemed to work fine. But lately I can't get it to detonate by flame or fuse. It will go off under hammer strike and if I put some in a test tube and heat it with a bunsen burner, but i still can't get it detonate when i mix it with a little ammonia nitrate and have a straw filled with bp all in the same bottle as a small charge. Maybe the h2o2 temperature when boiling off the water, sometimes goes over 80c. Or when i nutraize it with baking soda i did something wrong. Some of the bakeing soda dosen't fully disolve. Would that cause my MEKP to not detonate under fuse? Do other people have the same problem with thier MEKP? Thanks

Zeppelin
One ball mill question: Would if be safe to mill Black Powder in a steel can (coffee can), using rocks as the media (in case you didnt guess, I dont have very much money)? My mill looks like crap, but it turns well. Motor is out of a smowman that waves Here is a picture of my mill:My Ballmill
BigBang
Hmmm, well, here is what I think will happen. "Ok, time to turn it on. Yipeee, It's work...BOOM...thud" Major spark risk, and also, even if it didn't spark, the rocks would most likely chip and screw up your BP. I don't want to hear that zep has bit the dust. Try using PVC pipe as the barrel, as there is probably a construction site nearby you For media, you could use fishing weights, as thats what I do, but since you don't have much cash, that might not work for you. mr.pyro
Yea def not a good idea. Just head to a gun shop, reloader, etc. and get some .50 cal rounds, even if they arent balls like mine, they still do a hell of a job. and like 10kg for 20 bucks isnt too bad. dragonman586
That doohickey of yours looks like it would make a better star roller than a ball mill. That angle doesnt look like it will work. Your bp or attempt at it may be squashed into a puck at the bottom of the jar.
Zeppelin
I cant get any ammunition... first of all I live in canada, second im 15. I have had no experience in star rollers so I wouldnt know anything about that.

Zeppelin
Does the inside of a mill have a smooth surface, or kind of like shelves on it?
Guest pyrokid00000
Smooth. The coffee can is to thin and not that safe. The best place to buy them is ebay i think. I picked this one up for 20.50 USD.
