I just harvesed my first batch of kclo3 (50-100g in a few days) because I wanted to try some. I have recrystallised it and its all ready to go. I tested it 50/50 with sugar and it burnt nicely.

I just tried making smoke with it, with 4g kclo3, 6g Rhodamine B, .5-1g of lactose. That was just something I thought would be a good forumula for it. It worked and made a nice purple smoke. I'm just wondering if there are any other 'real' and 'tested' formulas. I also have normal red dye and blue dye.

Scroll down a bit...this was the biggest list I could find: http://www.bombshock...smoke_bomb.html They did look like the same as a few I've seen elsewhere, so they should work. PyroGuie also has a few...for some reason I didn't see any comps for blue...

http://www.pyrocreations.com/smoke_stars I imagine that these could be utilized as smoke devices, too.

I wish that I had the chems for colored smoke...Now I feel worse. The girl I asked to prom has lightened up to me, and I asked her to go to the movies with me. She said sure, and I called to find out if her parents were OK with it. Then I found out she got into a fight w/her parents, and was grounded, and I was like2sad.gif And now I sit here, listening to Mozart, Beethoven, and browsing /b/ and the other assorted cesspits of the Interwebz.

But I might have a friend over to assemble and shoot some shells, so maybe my weekend won't be a total waste......maybe.

Here is a video of one of my sky lanterns with 'niagra falls' mix attched to it. (I can't believe sky lanterns are now banned in Australia? Makes no sense)

I think it's a matter of time before they're banned everywhere. Then again, sparklers are by far the most dangerous firework item and they're everywhere. We shall see. They're starting to get banned in the US too. Crappy skylanterns in theory light unintentional fires a great distance away.

It's ridiculous. These are the only lanterns I have had, so I can't comment on all lanterns. But every single one of these have gone up, they go out and then they come down. Totaly burnt out and there is nothing burning. I expect that all lanterns do the same.

What might happen is the manufacturer may make the "balloon" too small/short and it over heats and ignights allowing the candle to fall and it may or may not burn out on the way down. Its what might happen.

AFAIK sky lantern paper is treated with a fire retardent...but maybe not. I have to say though, I've never seen one with a candle inside ;)

So most of my friends have gotten tattoos recently and I'm tempted to jump on the bandwagon!

I thought about it and there's only one thing in life I really feel strongly enough about that I'd never regret getting a tattoo on the topic.

Ya know what the topic is? Fireworks of course!

I googled fireworks tattoos and found one that looks pretty cool http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3395/3613673218_859a9bb64b.jpg

I was thinking maybe something like this except with the words "never forget" replaced with the formula for black powder! Maybe just "75/15/10" or something like that!

The likelihood of me going through with this is actually pretty slim, but it's a fun thing to think about :P

Two members here got the greenman from the cover of John Bate's book. It was one of the cooler and more personal tattoos I've seen.

That is pretty sweet. I had thought about a greenman tattoo as well, but it seems like it's somewhat of a pyro community symbol. But then again, the formula for blackpowder perhaps fits an even narrower audience! As for an actual tattoo, I'm in no hurry. It'll prolly be years from now when I figure out the right thing to get.

REMINDER: Pyrotechnic Workshop Reference exists and can always use more info.

I have updated my signature.

I took hazardous waste management and emergency responce (HAZWOPER) and Chemistry of Hazardous Materials recently and have learned about some nice programs that some of y'all may find helpful.

Cameo chemicals (available standalone and web interface) and WISER (available standalone, mobile standalone, and web interface, can use web on blackberries, iphones, etc) are nice for gathering information on chemicals. Chemical Reactivity Worksheet trys to predict what will happen when chemicals mix. (it is often wrong, but better than nothing.) ALOHA simulates chemical vapor release plumes with wind speed and direction etc in case you have ever seen a tanker carrying hazardous cargo and wondered what would happen if it was released.

Also adding a link for the Emergency Responce Guidebook 2008 edition. Made for reponders to emergencies... but still nice. Its cool to keep a copy in your car glove compartment for road trips. Get your co-pilot to use the book to identify the contents of chemical tanker trucks by their UN ID number.

May add more, dunno.

Finished a 8oz rocket set last night. It is patterned after the Steve Laduke Universal Hybrid tooling. SST spindle and aluminum rammer.

Is there anyone in the US who can help out a fellow pyro? :)

I've managed to snap the extractor on my .22, Brownells have a replacement part for $6, but of course being on the wrong side of the world shipping is going to cost me a packet. I figure as long as I am paying for shipping, I might as well add a couple of tools onto the order and spread the cost out a little bit, but Brownells won't ship the tools internationally.

So I am hoping I might be able to ship to someone in the states and get them to forward the package on to me. I am happy to pay all the costs and throw in a bit extra for your time, etc.

None of the things I am after are "parts essential for the operation of a weapon" so there shouldn't be a problem with export certificates or anything like that. Australia doesn't have any laws against importing tools and the extractor is for a rifle that I am licensed for so there shouldn't be any trouble at this end.

If anyone can help me out it would be much appreciated.

Edit: I knew there would be some helpful person who could give me a hand. Thanks!

1.How it will ignite, when it's brushless? (At least it seems to be)

2.Nothing prevents him from isolating the motor. Mine is an opened brushless too.

Yesterday, a guy gave me an oil pan from a VW engine. But when I got home with it, the vinegar test for Mg was negative. It seems to be another of these Al-Zn-Cu alloys. :(
