Avatar was a GREAT movie! agreed! Its a shame the place I was on vacation with my friends didn't have it 3D, but still very well put nonetheless.

On the nuts side of things, I'm going crazy putting together things for tomorrow. Cake's, racks, insert mines, fountains, set pieces, leaders and lift on shells.....

Ahhh, I just had another cup of coffee to help me out tonight.

It's 1:30 AM and I'm awake and jealous ;{)

Woah! Its still 10:30 over here and I got all night!

I feel bad for ya' Rich. At least put together a Sparkler Set piece. I know I will, they turn out pretty cool too. ;)

Edit: Well, thats it for tonight fellas', I gotta get building, I'll see if I can take some pictures of the building, there will most definitely be videos coming up this weekend.

What's up!? I havn't been around these parts in quite some time and just figured I would stop in and see who is still here from back in the day. I'm guessing Mumbles is still here?

I want to use the spolettes to get a burn speed idea, and rough set of compositions to start from.

I reckon the deciding factor will be how you intend to time them, if you are using a stopwatch or something then you will need a longer column to minimise the effect of your reaction time, if you are using a cheap camera that does 15 fps then you will need a longer column than if you can record at 60fps.

I've done a bit of testing with a 30fps camera and about a 2" spollette and it was good enough for me, but I wasn't after the type of accuracy you are probably after.

Posted

What I like to do is get my camera it can do up to 60fps. Then set up a good quality stopwatch so its in the shot.

Start stop watch, hit record, light , accurate!

I sure am. These people aren't ever going to be able to get rid of me :P

Good you see you around again. I hope all is well.

Yeah everything is good. I figured I should get back on reading these forums to get caught up in the fireworks world again. Good to see some familiar faces are still around here.

Wait... What happened to the other two pages of posts in this thread? I distinctly remember it being 300 pages long, because I was going to try hard to be the first post on the 300th page but I didn't make it.
Posted
Huh, good point. I made the post that put it over to 300 posts, so I know it got there.
Posted
Did they get compressed, or deleated in some sort of computer(or human) based error?
Posted
what happens when a member deletes his account, would all his posts disappear?
Posted
I wouldnt think so. Someone might'e deleted their posts, but thats a lot of posts that just got deleted.
Posted

I'm still not sure actually. A member can't delete their own posts after a few days, and no one made enough posts in the last week to knock this thread down 2 pages, not even me :) but I would know if I deleted 30 posts or so. I have a few more things to look into, but I am as confused as you guys.

[edit] I figured out what happened, and it's really nothing to worry about. It happens from time to time here, it's just really noticeable here because the thread was over 300 pages long and very old.

Right then...2 questions.

Crosettes--What would be a good size for a 4inch shell? I'm thinking a slower charcoal, or glitter comp, in 1/2in crosettes. I would be using MagAl flash for break, due to the fact I don't have any Al stronger than -325 brightflake, and I assume that you need a strong flash for crosettes.

Buried PVC pipes. I have my B-day coming up, and I want to do a show, and survive with all body parts where they should be. I only have one each of 2,3,4in HDPE mortars. I would cut the PVC, block with concrete, and bury in the frozen pasture below the pond using a posthole digger. They would be buried up to their rims in frozen ground, and be spaced about 4 inches apart. I know that this isn't the ideal setup, but I think that this would be the best way to minimize any danger. The audience would be up on a hill, ~200 feet away. Would frozen ground, and the pipes being well-buried up to their rims, be enough protection? I am counting on 6 2inchers, 10 3 inchers, and 2 4inchers.

Are you making ball or canister crossette shells? This plays a role. 3/4" to 1" for canisters, probably 3/8" or 1/2" for ball shell.

Seriously, get rid of the PVC. The Calendar says your birthday isn't for 7 weeks. That is more than enough time to get some fiberglass or HDPE in, which will in all likeliness will run you about $20-25 incl shipping.

Well, I will be using ball shells, so I think that I will go with the 1/2inch crosettes.

As for the PVC, I guess that I will nix that. I spent my last 400 bucks on chems, and those single mortars. I don't know where you're getting 25 bucks for 5 2inch mortars, 9 3inch mortars, and a 4 inch mortar, Mumbles. Pyrogear, Pyrodirect, Kastner, etc would have all those for quite abit more than 25 bucks. Even going with Kastner, which is the cheapest, it comes out to about 60 bucks, not including shipping. Unless, of course, you have a cheaper site?

It's not a matter about time, it's a matter of money. Of course, since when has anything gone well where one went cheaper? Ah well, no interesting birthday fireworks this year <_<

I see what you meant now. The $25 incl shipping was for 1x 2", 3", and 4" mortar. I thought you were reloading from a single mortar of each size.

Hey what's up run! looks like you've been sticking around here quite a while too!

Posted (edited)

Yup, I'm still haunting the place. I don't really practice much any more, except on leave, so I kinda just hang around and be completely ineffective. Oh, I plan on bein' around for a few minutes yet don't get me wrong. (Yeah Mumbles.. Yer stuck with me 'til ya finally get sick of it all and ban me. (Then I will be back anyway.. It will just be under a different name and I will lurk more!))

So, what brings ya back this way Teknix? You finally getting some free time and making/smelling the smoke again? (In other words, are you finally getting old enough to putter/tinker yet?)

When is trey double aught coming 'round anyway?

The other day I decided to mill some sulfur down to a super-fine consistency. My brass media came out tarnished as normal, perhaps a bit more but nothing scary. Then I washed them off with warm water while they were still in a screen colander. I left/forgot them still wet, with a tiny puddle of water left under them for a half hour. When I came back I was rather surprised to find them a grayish color, smelling like rotten eggs with the mesh pattern from the screen quite literally branded into the media.

When I say branded I mean it, the marks were still fully visible een efater a 20-30min milling session with sand. Its gone now, but still, very, very weird!

Copper sulfide can hydrolyze, thus the smell. However, you may want to find a better way to clean your media. There is some concern that sand can embed in your mill jar or media and spark. These concerns come from Lloyd Sponnenburgh, so they're not from some quack.
Posted
Although much less abrasive, kitty litter seems to work well for me cleaning media. You could also just wash well with water and then roll the media on a towel or rag to dry.
Posted

I'm an idiot! I have a bag of useless kitty litter downstairs. I'm tossing the sand out ASAP!

But do you guys know why there were marks ONLY where the media was contacting the metal screen?

Posted (edited)

I would guess the screen rusted a bit where there it contacted the screen due to residual wetness trapped between the screen and the media. The rust from the screen just transferred onto the brass. Just a guess, I'm no expert.

On another brass related topic, I finally got in my brass rod... 14 feet of 3/4" round stock. Should I cut it into 1" lengths or 3/4" lengths for media?
