AprenticeChemist
Hey hey hey doubt anyone remembers me since I haven't posted in like years but since this deployment started wanting to get back into pyro and now I have plenty of money to spend on it haha. Does anyone know whether any of the sites to buy chems from are watched or if any chems in particular are watched by the gov? Im kind of paranoid especially since I have a love for guns and I have money I have been stocking up on ammo and plan on making a few gun purchases on leave I wouldn't want the government thinking im a terrorist if I started buying pyro chems as well. I mean it kind of sucks the way things are but having the hobby of shooting and the hobby of amatur chemist kind of automatically makes you a terrorist to the ignorant. Well I have seen a few familar names around hope everyones been doing great.
optimus
Good to hear from you Apprentice! I feel for you guys in the US - things aint exactly peachy over here in the UK, but it seems to me like all you have to do is mention constitutional rights and own a gun to be labeled a domestic terrorist. Say hello to UN gun-control treaties - that ammo is gonna have to last you! I've seen a few 'watched lists' by googling 'ATF watched list' but I think that's more to do with pre-cursors and suchlike, and for larger amounts. I think it's safe to say we're all on some kind of list - I know I am : )
Richtee
Happy Thanksgiving to all the Americans here! And remember to try to eat BEFORE the Lions game to avoid either a loss of appetite, or choking with laughter on your food!
AprenticeChemist
Yea things are no beuno in the world I know you guys got royally fucked out in UK as far as guns and such. I guess ill just have to hope I don't get put on some watch list because since I have money id like buy most of my chems in decent ammounts but I guess if I just spread it out and order my oxidizers at different times and my metals at other times maybe ill slip through. Just sucks because like I said I plan on stocking up on ammo while have the money now because the price just keeps going up so don't want to seem to suspicious. I really wish I hadn't let my chemical trunk get thrown out since I did have some good shit in it. Luckily I do still have some of my old chemicals but most of the good ones got thrown out. Can anyone recommend some good sites for ordering chems/fuse? I got some KNO3 from Americanpyrosupply but if anyone knows of a cheaper place it would be nice. I already ordered about 150ft of fuse off of cannon fuse since I used to get my stuff from them and they had GREAT customer service but if theres anywhere thats a LOT cheaper ill go there. Cannonfuse.com kind of made me a customer for life when there was a mix up on my fuse I meant to get one kind and accidently got a differnt kind they hooked up it and gave me 200ft of fuse(had some cosmetic problems but worked fine) for about $15 plus threw in some samples of all of the fuse they had at the time. I thought that was really cool. happy thanksgiving to everyone.

TheEskimo
Look up Seattle Pottery supply. They have KNO3 for about a dollar/pound for 100 pounds. It's slightly more expensive for smaller amounts. They also have cheap oxides, clay, etc. HOORAY!!!!!! Just did the 100th Run For The Diamonds in Berwick, PA. 791st out of about 2,100 runners. 15km, or 9 miles, for you people that can't convert. Bring on Thanksgiving!!! Richtee
A guy came into a gun shop the other day to ask a favor. He had a S&W 629 that he wanted to dispose of after a mishap at the range. He said there was a loud bang when he tested his new load and the gun smacked him in the forehead, leaving a nice gash. When the tweety birds cleared, this is what he saw..... http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr72/esalink/cfc2e6a1.jpg http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr72/esalink/cfc2e7a2.jpg http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr72/esalink/cfc2e8a3.jpg http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr72/esalink/cfc2e994.jpg He's lucky (OR we're UNLUCKY) he's still alive... man- how hot was that powder to detonate in the 2 adjacent chambers?!? TheSidewinder
Sweet Jesus, that's scary-looking! Yeah......I do *REALLY* wonder what was his "new load". For the life of me I can't remember the brand and name, but there's a "small-calibre" pistol powder (double-base, iirc) that's just scary hot, and should NEVER be used in even a .357 Magnum load, let alone a .44 Mag. Ummm... Bullseye? Or 700? Or something like that. Dammit, I can picture the can it comes in but can't remember the writing on it. It's a spherical powder, too. Gunzway
Just throwing this out here. I'm interested in purchasing some pyro literature and I would enjoy to own a hard-copy book or two on the subject. This hobby is one I feel very strongly towards piracy as well, considering it's such a small hobby and the fact publishers wouldn't earn nearly as much money as others; they definitely don't need illegal copies floating around. So in good will and a thirst for knowledge, I would like to buy a book or two. Considering Skylighter is one of the only sellers of pyro books and they refuse to ship stuff to Australia (probably as it's not worth a potential problem). I would like to ask someone in the US which would want to purchase the book for me and send it over. I'm obviously going to cover the costs of the book and shipping, I'm also in no problems for sending an extra five bucks or so to shout a beer for your work. Considering Skylighter is currently having a 50% off sale, it makes it an idealistic time to do it as well. Just send me a PM if you're interested in helping me out, I'll be looking at users that have been members for longer and are more reputable. So take no offense if I'm not keen as you've just joined yesterday, just being a little cautious. Thanks,
Miech
Suddenly my jaw dropped to just above ground level. The Dutch government made aerial shells up to 2" legal, while last year they wanted to forbid any fireworks at all. I don't get it any more... mike_au
I would like to ask someone in the US which would want to purchase the book for me and send it over. There are a few services that will do this for you. I think one is called ShipTo, there are a few others, try googling for remailer or mail forwarding. I was looking at using one a little while back, the price was OK but it would have been a lot more reasonable if I was ordering a few things and got them to combine shipping. Ventsi
Suddenly my jaw dropped to just above ground level. The Dutch government made aerial shells up to 2" legal, while last year they wanted to forbid any fireworks at allJust be glad man!!!! Do you guys know a good plug mix for salutes? I was thinking clay on one end and the time fuse inserted in the other [1/4" ID tubes] but I don't know if the clay would provide enough confinement for the flash to rupture the fairly thick tube walls. I was testing some of these inserts using hot glue for the plug and my cameraman complained when got "shot" by a few of them. Is there a good plug mix that will adhere as well as hot glue but will vaporize when the insert explodes? And another Q'n: I'm having a problem with a certain smell coming off of my hands, its a H2S/SO2/S8 smell , very, very faint but I can't get it off, I've tried damn near everything, even washing with dilute bleach and dilute acids. It really bothers me..
Gunzway
Thanks for those who shared interest with shipping to me. I've made arrangements with someone and I no longer need your generous offers. @Ventsi: I've only use whistle mix, but I usually just made the plugs out of kraft paper by inserting it into the tube and ramming it. I would then have a cavity between the plug and the end of the tube and fill it with a generous amount of hot glue. Just make a thick plug and secure it well. I've never used a clay type product, even though it's probably no different if it were to shoot out. I just don't like the possibility of a clay tablet hitting someone with lightning fast speeds. TheEskimo
Well, it's been lots of fun, and all, but I think that I may be getting out of pyro, for right now. I just don't have much time for it, and I need money for other things, and I'm getting too distracted from other important stuff. I'm gonna think things over, but I'm pretty sure that I will be selling the whole kit and kaboodle. I am pretty sure that this is it for a couple of years. I'm going to talk it over w/family and friends tomorrow, and see what happens. There may be some good deals on chems, and equipment soon...keep your eyes peeled. Just hold onto the stuff, store it somewhere secure and away from the weather. There's no point just selling it all off. You might find yourself a long weekend with absolutely nothing to do, just crack out the boxes and make a rocket or two. Considering you're going to come back to it, might as well have everything readily available. Soon when I progress into the final stages of my schooling life, I doubt I'll have the time either. But it's no real bother to just keep it. I guarantee you that you'll find a day that you'll just want to make a fountain or something and you'll be kicking yourself you flogged it all off. It's fair enough you need to leave it while you go through busy times, doesn't mean you have to necessarily cut it completely for that time. scarbelly
I'm going to agree with Gunzway, at least in principle. It sure is a shame that you're quitting, but at least you're leaving with no hard feelings. Sure makes it easy to come back later. Anyways, good luck with everything, and I hope you return to the hobby soon.
Swede
Well, it's been lots of fun, and all, but I think that I may be getting out of pyro, for right now. You'll be back, now that you've smelled the smoke. I was "out" for almost 20 years raising a family. A lot changed in 20 years... mainly the state of the art for home pyro has skyrocketed... bad pun. We've had legal shells up to 2" here too, they were made legal last year, but somehow, they got banned 2 or 3 days(!) after sales started Hope you guys have more luck. Miech
Very cool! I'll be in Holland just before new years... I've always wondered but I never really looked - is it possible purchase pyro in Amsterdam/Haarlem?You can (legally) buy fireworks the 29th, 30th and 31th of december. Setting them off is only allowed the 31th from 10 am to 2 am the next day. Usually you can get it at bike stores, gardening stores and a few dedicated stores. If you can't find it, ask for Halfords, Intratuin, Welkoop or Boerenbond. I don't know if they sell those little shells yet, but they do sell fireworks. I just don't have much time for it, and I need money for other things, and I'm getting too distracted from other important stuff. All those reasons applied to me to one extent or another- but were not enough to dissuade me. Took the ATF for that. Consider yourself lucky. I really miss pyro, but to get back in would mean going 'legal" and I can't in any way afford that. Sigh.

scarbelly
My mom's trying to convince me to place my ball mill in my basement under a blast shield of some kind (like wire mesh to protect from the media), but I insist that it should go outside. This part of the basement is very secluded and made solely of concrete (walls) and insulation. How can I convince her that it should go outside more than just telling her of the slight chance of explosion (which she dismisses as not a big deal if in that section of the house)? Or is she right in that it is acceptable to run a ball mill indoors in a vacant place where it is nearly impossible to start a fire?
