Arthur Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 There's few things that beat "First Solo" time, but flying a tail dragger and doing aeros in a Harvard (Texan to you folk!) certainly comes close. I've found a Lancaster that I may be able to go for a ride in, but even riding in a Spit seems rather difficult at the moment.
OneEyeCharlie Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 (edited) After reading Arthur's post, this suddenly became the Random Jealousy thread. Although, I was fortunate enough to be on a brief spin on a B-17 this summer. Is it wrong for a 40+ yr old man to make sounds (out loud) simulating a .50 cal while standing at the waist gunner position? Also, is there any operational Lancaster in the States? scarbelly Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 (edited) Ventsi,After looking for a while, all I'm able to find is the minute and a half segment of it. I searched all of the Dirty Jobs episodes, and I'm not sure there is one available yet. Maybe the whole episode doesn't come out for a little while? They are in the middle of a season after all. Anyways, here's the segment if you're interested:http://dsc.discovery.com/videos/dirty-jobs...explosives.html On the site, it says it was posted 8 days ago, so it may just be a trailer? I remember hearing about how clean fireworks factories were made to be, but seeing this made me concerned... They weren't wearing hearing or eye/face protection. Edited November 15, 2009 by scarbelly

Jo, I watched the whole segment in some other language, all 32 min of it. I guess its just not out in the US or something Edit: Proof http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17rn_6zZCvYhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsY5JabwF1U...feature=channelhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpqLtWnBxSU...feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAfBq9V4d4o...feature=channel Edited November 15, 2009 by Ventsi
scarbelly Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 (edited) Hmmm... That's odd... It wasn't on any of the episode lists either... EDIT:I believe it's coming out soon... the season started to continue on October 7th, with 11 episodes planned. With 1 episode a week, that means that 6 have already aired and 5 have not. It is supposed to be one of the eleven, my bet is it's just one of the ones that hasn't aired yet (in America, I guess it has elsewhere...) Edited November 15, 2009 by scarbelly
Arthur Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 I hear on the grapvine that there is a Lancaster that flies, in Canada. But that's a big place and I don't know where. In the UK we have three Lancasters left BBMF, Lincolnshie Aviation Heritage centre, and Hendon Museum.
TheEskimo Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 Charlie--if you live near Niagara Falls, the other flying Lancaster is just across the border in Ontario. Heres the site, http://www.warplane.com/ , go to the CWH Flying Schedule for more info. Hope this helps. Hooray, today is a working day. BP, BP rice hulls, stars, go fly, and do some homework. I am pumped for everything but the last one.

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, ON. Roughly 360 miles east of me. Of course, at the current exchange rate, it would cost me over $2000 for a ride in the Lancaster.
Arthur Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 (edited) Hmmm.... pricey but that's for an HOUR in a Lanc! Those four Merlins must drink petrol. Added.. Can we book a side trip at PGI and several of us go? Edited November 15, 2009 by Arthur
TheEskimo Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 (edited) Injuries are good for a pyro. Every time I get a hankering to go blow up the lawn with some M-*)s, or shoot rockets horizontally, or send depth charges to the fish in my pond, I look at my hand. I see the scar, and think "Is that 2 seconds of fun worth the potential thousands and thousands of medical, and property damages", and then I stop, and go do something that has fewer repercussions.Speaking of flying in old warbirds, anybody go to the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum WWII Weekend? 'Tis usually the first weekend in June; they have tons of really cool stuff. Edited November 15, 2009 by TheEskimo
scarbelly Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 When I'm looking at sheaves, is bore diameter basically the same as the diameter the shaft needs to be? I bought some sheaves, and one of them seems correct, but the other is completely off. The outside diameter is around 5 or 6 inches and it was supposed to be 1.5"... Plus the diameter around the shaft was supposed to be 1/2" but turned out to be 7/8". I'm not sure I want to find a 7/8" shaft...
Mumbles Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 ID, or the bore size, should be the shaft size. McMaster has a nice diagram and explainations. http://www.mcmaster.com/#pulleys-for-belts/=4k2oaa
scarbelly Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Erghh... Well It's good to know that it wasn't my bad then. I think I can actually make do without letting them know that they sent me the wrong one, they sent me a sheave worth at least 15 bucks more than the one I ordered hehe.
mike_au Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 When people talk about using fiber reinforced tape to spike plastic shells, do they mean the plastic or paper type of tape?
scarbelly Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 Generally the plastic type of tape. I believe it looks basically like packing tape, except it has whitish threads running lengthways down the tape. It is also called "fiber(glass?) reinforced strapping tape" There is such a thing as fiber reinforced gummed tape as well, which is probably the paper type you are thinking of, but I think this is used more for paper shells.
mike_au Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 Cool, that is what I thought but I read a couple of posts that made it sound like the paper stuff.
scarbelly Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 How long should one wait after using a mortar before loading it again? If the lift cup is pasted well can it basically be immediate?
Ventsi Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 Are you asking how long you should wait before putting another shell/item in your gun? Normally Reloading like that is frowned upon but if you have a tool with which you can take the remnants out of the mortar and a fairly thick and well pasted lift cup it should be a matter of 20 seconds.Just take the crap out of your gun, blow in it a few times to make sure there are no glowing embers and load in your item, though make sure not to lean over the tube once you start loading! I usually prefer to bring enough tubes so I don't have to reload.
scarbelly Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 Yeah I figured it would be something like that. I have no problem waiting, I was just wondering. Since I shoot mostly at the beach, can I fill the mortar with sand to help put out any embers (especially damp sand) until I can feel that the inside of the mortar is cool to the touch? I will most likely just get a few more mortars, they're not particularly expensive, and I don't shoot a shitload of shells or anything...
Arthur Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 Reloading during a show is really bad practise, one glowing ember and your next shell may go off before you planned or before you get clear even. If you clear the tube then it's safer -get the old paper out and check for sparks or embers left inside. The old canon crews used to put a brush down the gun barrel to clear the hot debris before putting the next powder in.
scarbelly Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 No I wasn't talking about like a full on show, especially not a professional one. But like if I had like 5 shells or so, and I could spare waiting up to like 30 minutes or something. I wouldn't be reloading immediately or anything.
NightHawkInLight Posted November 22, 2009 Posted November 22, 2009 (edited) My new mini comet/rocket press picked up at a garage sale for $10: http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg199/NightHawkInLight/NorwalkJuicer001.jpg http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg199/NightHawkInLight/NorwalkJuicer002.jpg http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg199/NightHawkInLight/NorwalkJuicer003.jpg fun little toy eh? Swede Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 Very nice find. And the design is something that can be replicated pretty cheaply. A bottle jack is maybe $15 new, and some scrounged materials could be turned into a decent press. I like the "juicer" label!
