TheEskimo
Goodness me, that sucks......Hooray, 1.9 years 'till college. Aerospace engineering, or somesuch for me. What is the prestigious school that Ritchee mentioned? Congratz, tho, on making it to finals...my bro decided to work in a state park in Maine after 2 years of college. scarbelly
Eskimo, I thought you were a senior in high school...? I remember you talking about college apps... I really have only hardly started that now, and as a Junior, you certainly don't need to worry about it, other than thinking about which ones you want to apply to, for a while. flying fish
Rich: Getting to where I'm am involved a lot of putting off work in the beginning of the semesters, then LATER a lot of staying up to rediculous hours and driving myself insane (only a bit short of Jack-Nicholson-in-the-shining crazy). I'm actually kinda a mediocre student, and I honestly don't know if I have what it takes for grad school. I'm also at the bottom of my O-Chem class pretty much...but I guess as a physics major with senioritis it is a maricle that I'm not ALREADY failing, lol! Eskimo: That's Kettering University. It's considered a top engineering school, but it isn't as prestigious as say, Rose Hulman, or MIT for that matter. Kettering is what's left of General Motors institute (GMI). In addition to ME/EE/CE/IE/CS they also have a good physics program, and a good chemistry program (in fact, I would argue that their chem & physics are BETTER than their engineering programs, considering how much the engineering students complain about incompetent professors and departments...but us applied science people seem to like our professors). The main thing that's unique about Kettering is the Mandatory co-op program. Edited September 17, 2009 by flying fish
TheSidewinder
Would that Kettering be in the same vein as Memorial Sloane-Kettering??
flying fish
Actually, I didn't know there was a connection until looking into it just now. Apparently they are both named after the inventor Charles F. Kettering. Though the organizations are not associated with one another. Many people still know us as GMI (General Motors Institute), as it was called up until 1998.

I tried to get in in '81. They laughed... and said grow tits or become a negro...or manufacture a 3.95 GPA. I went to Ferris, then Lawrence Tech...now LTU. flying fish
Nowadays the admission requirements are very light...they only require a 3.0 GPA, and would probably let someone in with an even lower GPA if they talked to admissions about it. This is one of their "solutions" to poor enrollment. Unfortunately there are a lot of students who don't find out that they can't handle it until they've already spent tons of money on this school (and that's another thing... to anyone without REALLY good scholarships this school really breaks the bank, reguardless of co-op sponsorship which typically doesn't come close to paying it off). Also, from what I've heard the old GMI was also very, very tough. Modern Kettering is demanding, don't get me wrong, but probably only slightly more so than your "average" 4-year college. From the stories I've heard, old GMI was like "Go here if you want to do NOTHING but homework day and night, week and weekend..."
NightHawkInLight
I just coated 1,000g Mg. Or at least I hope I did. I heated the Mg as well as the water to dissolve the dichromate, as is said to do in a book I found available in text form online: Pyrotechnic Chemistry. It had a good list of recognizable authors, so I hope it was trustworthy. When I mixed the two in a large Al tray, the dichromate solution foamed green instantly. After mixing all 1,000 grams it is now a light gray with a hint of green. I sure hope I didn't just fail to coat the Mg and instead heavily contaminated it. Thoughts? Share any experience if you have it please.

NightHawkInLight
i hope ned doesnt mind, here are the pics.It looks like I'm in luck. I just didn't expect any sort of noticeable reaction to occur. Let alone a somewhat violent one.
Ralph
dichrmoate is an oxidiser and a rather spontaneous one at that magnesium is a very reactive metal = vilent reaction

scarbelly
I actually hadn't gotten the email - guess I need to sign up - but I got lucky enough that I happened to check the prices yesterday. Noticing that prices were pretty low, I took advantage of them. While I was there I of course bought some other goodies. Looks like I helped to prove the point that sales will help sell other normally priced products as well, bringing in a greater total profit
NightHawkInLight
Does anyone have a line on some small diameter visco- 1/16" or 1.6mm? I only need a couple hundred feet- I found some 1/16" at a good price from Pyrocreations, but 1500 feet is the minimum order... Thanks in advance. What do you need the mini visco for that 3/32" or blackmatch couldn't function in?
Mumbles
Cannonfuse has 1.8mm fuse. I don't know if the few tenths of a mm would make a difference. It's less than 1/100th of an inch. http://www.cannonfuse.com/store/pc/viewPrd...mp;idcategory=
oskarchem
Hey guys I decided to pop in and say hello. You probably don't remember me but I do . Anyway, I've been off pyro for quite some time, but each time I see a shell or rocket take off, I get a small pinch in my heart. The worst is around NYE. Have a good eavning! dagabu
Thanks. All things considered, it's hard to pass up Pyrocreation's deal, it works out to $3.85/100', delivered. Shipping is what hurts- it costs about the same for the vendors to ship a few hundred feet of fuse as it does to ship out 1500 feet. 1/16" is ideal for what I'm doing. 1.8 mm or 2.0 mm would also do. I already have 3/32" and 1/8", they are just a bit large for side-fusing 1/4" OD rockets. I often use black match, but I like the moisture resistance of the visco when the evening dew sets in. The 3/32" fuse is also OK for the small saxons, hummers and 'copters, but I've made some smaller that can use the 1/16" to 2.0 mm fuse/vents. Sorry, I got mine from Skylighter. Pretty pricey.
