RUUUUUN
oh, I like the O-chem thread don't get me wrong: I learn things there. I just find it kinda weird that the RANDOM THREAD was THREE QUARTERS of the way DOWN the PAGE!!! I don't recall that ever happening before, even when it had a ten page limit and they kept makin' new ones( the old board, for you yungins in the audience...) There was nearly a 10 day stasis in the random thread.... that is just plain WEIRD, to say the least! Luckily I got here in the nick of time and kept it from going double digit by 1 hour and 40 minutes! Edited August 1, 2009 by RUUUUUN
50AE
From a tough week of working, I'm back in Bulgaria, it's so nice to be here again I need more work to begin with pyro though. My ball mill needs a total reconstruction, my workplace too. I have to spend some time to resume the hobby "correctly".I can't get out of my head the mania to finish quickly, I'm so in a hurry to do pyro again
Swede
On the CMC gum thing - the Firefox CMC gum I received is excellent - light, fluffy, pure, compared to the hideous eBay stuff.
flying fish
I found about 20 very small (probably less than 1") empty medicine capsules with screw-on lids at a garage sale today. I think they'll make good...somethin. I don't know, haven't decided yet. Shell inserts, small rocket headers, roman candle or cake shots...Should be simple work to stick a fuse in the lid, cram some stars and granulated whistle in there and screw it back together! Now I wish I had more than 20. I think they had about 30 there, maybe I'll go back and buy out the rest of em!

flying fish
Thanks for the warning. I think these are the soft polyeurethane kind, but I'll do a test to see how they break.
50AE
A good day. I received a sample of aluminium bronze grade which seemed very good for burst charges, and I would try it for silver comets. It's a very fine, a little sticky silver powder and it has a nice smell. Its only disadvantage - it stains horribly. The supplier sells it for 6 euros per kg Edited August 2, 2009 by 50AE
Mumbles
There should be a recycling symbol on the bottom to tell you the composition of the medicine bottles.
flying fish
The bottles have something that looks more like a logo on the bottom, that says "CP" or "CIP" (barely legible, the letters, if they even are letters are elongated), and they also have a number on them, but it is different from bottle to bottle (7-11A, 7-12A, etc...). No trace of a recycling symbol.
TheEskimo
Hmmm...I've been blowing holes in the lawn because my 1 pound coreburners all had too strong of a BP. There goes a good pound of greenmix, and like 40 inches of expensive Skylighter tubing
Seymour
Unless you have some insane charcoal (from narnia no doubt), or excessively narrow nossles greenmix will not cause catos with end burners. Even the poorest greenmix should cause coreburners of anything like traditional geometry to cato. Sounds like you need to change some of the physical aspects of the motors. TheEskimo
""Even the poorest greenmix should cause coreburners of anything like traditional geometry to cato""Seymor--Huh? I thought greenmix shouldn't cause CATOs. I use Al and brass tooling from the local machinist, using 5/16inch nozzle. I use this spec. from Wouter Visser, and WichitaBuggyWhip. Fuel is Skylighter Airfloat, with KNO3 and S milled until of flour consistency. The core goes about .5 to 2/3 into the engine.
Mumbles
I think it's your fuel. Even green mix is too hot for core burners. Try: 60 - KNO330 - Charcoal10 - Sulfur That should hopefully do the trick. Coarse charcoal can be added in for the airfloat to make nicer tails once you have them flying. Seymour
If you use Potassium nitrate, Charcoal and Sulfur in the ratios 75/15/10, in a coreburner of traditional dimensions, it will explode. Use greenmix, or ball milled Potassium nitrate, Charcoal and Sulfur in the ratios 60/30/10 and you are on track for success. Edit - Mumbles, you beat me! TheEskimo
Okey dokey...I will try soon...I'm all outta chems. Mumbles
Not yet, but I should probably get on that. There should be something for 5000. I've been giving it some thought as I am about to hit that mile stone.
RUUUUUN
^^^ "Lawson criterion" would be an appropriate next level IMHO

Not necessarily. Using hotter BP the chances of a CATO increases sure, but there are other variables too. ActionTekJackson and I make our core burners with pretty fast meal and used to get a lot of CATO's up until he bought a press. We haven't had a CATO since. Swede
I'm a fan of homemade ball mills, and we've all seen some pretty ingenious designs, but on many, you see the jar itself wrapped with rubber, or the roller bars themselves covered with an odd variety of plastic tubing and such. I had been having problems with slippage on my own mill, which has its rollers covered with vinyl tube. I forgot where, but somewhere on APC, FrankRizzo recommended the use of bicycle inner tubes to cushion ball mill rollers, and improve the grip of the roller on the jar. So off to Wal-mart, where I found several likely Chinese inner tubes for $3 each. Back in the shop... if it's hard to install the tube on the bar, by cutting close to the valve stem, then sealing the cut end with a clamp, you can inflate the inner tube with an air compressor, and it'll go on easily, like a sock. I found it only needs a couple PSI. Otherwise, it can be hard to get the tube section on over the bar. Anyway, this improved the setup immensely. Cleaning the rubber with isopropyl alcohol will keep it tacky. When I tried it with my PVC jars, it gripped amazingly well. Easy to replace, too, when they wear out. http://www.5bears.com/firew/itube01.jpg http://www.5bears.com/firew/itube02.jpg The bars probably did not need it, but I added cable ties at both ends to keep everything in place. TY Frank! Great idea, and highly recommended.
Ventsi
I've seen and read about different posts and sites about place to buy or ways to make Red Iron Oxide.I've been wary about buying the red cement coloring from SAKRETE since I wasn't sure wether it was pure or not.Anyone else used this stuff before, Home Depot carries it in 1lb boxes for $5.http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/productImages/400/39/39816d40-44d7-4769-881a-67210a246774_400.jpg EDIT; I looked at a few more MSDS sheets and its 96% red iron oxide and 4% SiO2, probably to make it freeflowing and mixing. TheEskimo
Anybody else hate the feeling from being singed by BP while testing a bit? Stings a little, and the skin feels tight and leathery.

scarbelly
I know this kid who was leaning over looking down at a dying campfire and one of my friends didn't know it so he sprayed in lighter fluid. The fire engulfed the kids face and his eyebrows and the front half of his head hair was all singed. He jumped back like 8 feet.
Swede
Ventsi, I think that stuff will work if it's 96% red iron oxide. The adulterants shouldn't cause a problem. You can also get it from places like Seattle Pottery extremely cheaply.
