flying fish
Cool! Since we are still talking about this sort of effect, I did shoot a video of a small (and lame) test shell last night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp7LHiiTleg . The star plate probably works better than my method (cutting), since you don't have to wet the comp as much. This would allow you to use a proper water based binder without killing the glitter effect (although, some glitters are not that sensitive to overwetting). Of course, I'm too poor to buy a star plate and too lazy to make one . Well, I guess I do have a single star pump...so I could try it if I wanted. deadman
Wow, I really like that colored head followed by glitter. I bet it would look really good in a larger shell. I've been thinking about buying a starplate. This might just be the effect to push me over the edge.
Swede
I tend to go off on weird tangents, and this is another one. One of the things that often concerns me when experimenting or testing new comps is the danger - just how squirrely is this new composition? Will it be overly sensitive to things like impact, abrasion, rough handling in general? A hammer gives crappy results... there's no real way to measure how impact sensitive something really is, unless you have a baseline, something known, to go by. Drop rigs aren't new, and there are models that could be considered standard, in that you'll get consistent results between users, with the same comp. This one is more comparative in nature. Loading the rig with a traditional perchlorate mix, like KP, and seeing the drop height necessary to set it off, will give me a known value, and I can say something like "definitely more impact sensitive than KP, roughly twice as sensitive" etc. This is quick and dirty, and hopefully functional. I used 7075 aluminum for the main block, but the anvils themselves are stainless, and replaceable. A big block of aluminum was bored out 3/4" wide by 1/2" deep, a flat-bottomed hole. A small disk of stainless nests in the bottom. There is a gas vent leading from the chamber to one side. The three pieces are shown here. http://www.5bears.com/firew/dropr01a.jpg In use, the sample (very small) is placed in the rig on top of the small anvil. The large anvil is then set in place: http://www.5bears.com/firew/dropr04.jpg http://www.5bears.com/firew/dropr03.jpg All that remains is to come up with a hanging weight and a ruler. For a stand, I think I am going to adapt my hydraulic press by simply hanging a small pulley from the top beam and using that to hoist a weight. The possibility exists to have the piston driven by the force of the explosion out the top. To do so, it'd have to overcome the mass of the impact weight, and I think the only way this will happen is if the sample size is too large. If it becomes a problem, I can mill a larger slot entirely from the side into the chamber. I'll try a few shots with tiny bits of nitrocellulose to start. I obviously enjoy making tools with a pyrotechnic aspect to them. The next project is going to be a BP burn speed tester that does not rely on counting video frames. A metal channel will form the test rig, and two cotton threads in the path of the BP burn will both start and stop the timer, a leftover Red Lion CUB7T000 from a kid science fair project, good to 1/1,000th of a second. RUUUUUN
First off: Lovely bit of work that. Secondly: I don't know if you have thought of this already but: If you are having a problem with to much gas production for your ventilation port, would it be more advantageous to port it at 180* to the original? Instead of boring out the original port or machining a channel to the edge. If you still had problems porting it on all four sides maybe? On a more random note... www.lmgtfy.com/?q=(insert key word here) is much much more hilarious and degrading than UTFSE LOL Edited July 13, 2009 by RUUUUUN
Mumbles
I'm really not trying to point attention to my post in the Agora. Can people see it? deadman
I don't really have a sister. I just spent the last 2 years in Texas and couldn't help but pick up little sayings like that. No offense to Richtee this being his birthday and all, but it is seriously the most depressing day of the year. The worst thing is it seams to last forever. I think a piss ant could eat a bale of hay faster. And not trying to be rude Sidewinder, but I come here to be depressed and don't need to see all the happy comments! deadman
Richtee you are hilarious. That post was a bit of venting with some "deadman" humor. Honestly I'm one of the most optimistic people I know and proud of it. It actually feels like i'm trying to be depressed. This is another random question: When is the first APC shoot gonna happen? We can all wear t-shirts with our avatar and username printed on them! Not just because we're forum nerds, but then we'll be able to recognize eachother. EDIT: I just noticed this is the random thread! I'd like to make a public apology to Sidewinder. I thought this was the occasional depression thread. Suggested targets would be Liberals, Politicians, Lawyers, and anyone who has the word "Activist" in their job description. No apology necessary Deadman. I figured you mixed up your threads. Pyrohawk
Hahahaha nice Sidewinder. This idea has been discussed dozens of times and it never seems to actually come togethor and happen. But if it ever does, I'd be up for it!
flying fish
Lol. Happy Birthday Richtee! Looking forward to the APC shoot....if it ever happens. But I'm already looking forward to a shoot which IS going to happen...next weekend. Nighthawkinlight convinced me to go (more like, he mentioned it casually and I suddenly realized that I HAD TO go). Really freaking excited about MPAG. Any interest in going Rich, or do you still need to stay away from the fireworks?!
Mumbles
I might be joining all you fellow in the MPAG next summer actually. It's a small chance, but somewhat likely none the less. So, who wants to donate 200 acres and 1,000,000 in insurance for the shoot? I'll bring some cookies and multibreak canisters.
Ventsi
Hey, how much BP can you guys put into one of those 3lb *wannabe* mills from Harbor Freight? I'm going to make a trip soon and a new mill is on my must do list, I'm kind of giving up on making my own, and don't give me all that crap of how easy it is . I know it is , just I dont have the power tools needed, hell I dont even have a hand-drill. Anyway, how much? 100g? If so I'm trotting to harbor freight. Mumbles
200g is good. 250g is a stretch. I use 100 50 cal lead balls, and that is undercharged. It takes between 8 and 12 hours.
Ventsi
Cool ,thanks I'll sure be buying one soon. Another stupid little question that just came up between me and my friend, would 1/8" thickness be enough for a 1.5" steel field cannon? Edited July 14, 2009 by Ventsi
Pyrohawk
That sounds ok to me. Just make sure your projectile fits properly and you aren't firing it with anything extreme like NC. But for a black powder cannon that small you should be ok. Bear in mind I don't know much about steel, I don't use it.
deadman
Don't worry about it RUUUUUN (I think that's the right amount of u's) I quit reading your posts when I ran across your interesting thread in the tests section. Not trying to call you out Mumbles but I can remember you mentioning a few times that 2009 was going to be your year for best shell from a first timer for pgi. Now you're not going to make it? Why aren't you going? If I make enough money in the next two weeks I think I am going to go. I am stoked about the insane amount of things they have going on. Just don't know who I'm gonna kick it with while I'm there.
