Richtee
Re: Heat guns 1800W is a lot to ask of a 120V outlet with a residential breaker. Well, a kitchen/diningroom outlet is supposed to be capable of 20A times 110VAC = 2200W theoretically ;{)
Yankie
I am ready for NYE, I have:7 x 4oz rockets12 x 1" comets and mines16 x 1.75" shells3 x 2.5" shells13 x 3" shells1 x 4" shell1 x 1.75" report all the shells except for 2 3" shells will be lit from one fuse which I will light at midnight. http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/5467/img1165um4.jpg P.S. on a completely random note, why do shells appear to rotate towards the end of the burn? a good example is Zmuro's willow diadem shell, it looks like the camera is being rotated but it is not. MilkyJoe
nice looking show, hope that 4" gun survives! As for the rotating effect, it looks like the wind is blowing the stars. ~Milky~

Yankie
Looking good, MilkyJoe beat me to it though that 4" looks a little flimsy. It only has to last one shot, then I will find a more sturdy one. Given your experience (and others on the forum) seeing as the bottom half of the mortar is surrounded by other mortars and the walls of the box would that be enough confinement for the shell to at least get in the air? oskarchem
I think it should suffice, but why don't you pour sand or earth into the box, to make sure that everything is well compressed. That's what I did with my mortars when I was still doing pyro. Swede: Nice collection of planes . I'm actually thinking of flying for pay.

I'd at least go with the sand idea...a 4" shell's gonna produce a bit of pressure... perhaps a couple layers of fiberglass tape might help too. Or at least make SURE it's the last shell to go up, and yer well away from a 4" burst radius! If it takes out the rack with shots left in the other tubes, or only goes up 50 foot... it's gonna be a problem. "Only has to last one shot" seems a bad idea in display stuff... on your own testing is one thing... but-

The burst radius wont be very big as it is a double petal with no flash booster.

Gunzway
Considering Yankie posted what he is doing for New Years I might as well post my little family orientated "show".I got about 800grams of assorted stars and I plan to reload and fire them throughout the night.I have roughly:400grams D1 Glitter200grams Tiger Tail100grams C6100grams Improvised Silver glitter. (It kind of flares, but it still will be shot). Most of these will be shot from small mortars, near 12am they will be shot from larger most likely such as 2" and 3". I also have a roman candle, but I have not made it yet. I think it may be a 6shot alternating D1 and the "Silver Glitter". I just finished making a fountain just because I got bored. It is a silver and gold based one which swaps halfway through. I have a film canister D1 glitter shell which should do something. The reason I don't have much is because I had insufficient lift and no 3" mortar. Well, three days ago I got awesome lift. Then just yesterday I found a heavily thick-walled cardboard 3" mortar. I decided not to rush a 3" shell as I wanted to paste it and make it look good. I also have a few little novelties like a Senko Hanabi improvised sparkler. Then some little crackers and jumping crackers. Nothing really impressive, though impressive towards the civilization which can only purchase sparklers and party poppers.
Swede
To those who replied about the PTFE heat shrink, thank you. It's too big to put in my furnace, and a kitchen oven cannot reach the required temps, something like 625 f. It's a cartridge heater encased in Cu tube, and the part that goes vertically is carrying wires, so I need to keep the heat away from that portion. I think it's just a matter of a propane torch or similar with a soft flame; or maybe (idea) I'll just turn the heater on out of the water and let it heat up. As soon as the heat shrink melts, immerse. I don't know why I didn't think of that before. I'll give it a try. Oskarchem, enjoy flying for fun. Once you take something you love and turn it into a job, it's not fun anymore. I've flown with guys who say "Isn't this fun!" as we climb out above some pretty clouds or something, and my answer is always another question... "Would you do this for free, for no pay?" "Well, no..." "Then by definition it cannot be fun, because if it was, you'd do it for free." Flying IS fun, when it's on your own schedule, your own agenda. It's a tough business right now. But if it's something you really want to do, go for it. Just go in eyes wide open. Most guys end up furloughed (layed off) once or thrice in their career. WarezWally
Not my photo, I was to drunk to take photos Was a bloody good night, smoked cigars, rolled joints with some British tourists and got happily drunk Got about half of our grog / drinks confiscated when we were entering, BYO alcohol was not permitted (funny that, though they were happy to sell me a $10 can of piss on the other side). The bastards wouldn't let us take our sealed bottles of coke, water or red bull in either, profiteering ahoy

hst45
Don't feel too bad. I effectivly paid $34 for one beer last night. Because........? Let me guess, $30.00 cover charge and a $4.00 Crudweiser? My NYE was a bust; I came home from work sicker than two dogs, the temperature was seven degrees and the wind was blowing a stout 40 MPH so I didn't get to shoot the 9 shells, 6 rockets and 4 starmines I had prepped. Oh well, another day (night actually).
Yankie
The 4" mortar died, and took out my mortar rack in the process, luckily it was the last shell, I built a barricade of sand around the mortars so it was safe for the audience. Here's whats left of the mortar: http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/8293/newimage1qj9.bmp http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/1420/newimageqw7.bmp Here's the whole show: NYE '09 Happy new years! Mumbles
It was something like that. $20 cover, $4 for a beer. Then we left and went to another bar, only $10 cover, but my friend being a genius decides we should pay the cover go in, walk through, and leave immediately. Eh, he made it worth while. Several drinks on him at the first place. No bar is worth $20 cover. For that price all my drinks should have been free, and served by topless women covered in real gold dust. Possibly someone to fan while another fed me grapes as well.
Swede
On the PTFE + cartridge heater... I turned it on with the heat shrink in place, and watched as the Cu tube changed to a brilliant purple, then gold... then the solder began to flow. The damned heat shrink just wrinkled up a bit. Operation aborted. What a PITA!! I know it's heat shrink, because when I apply a torch (carefully) to a small piece, it shrinks right up. But for some reason, on the pipe, it doesn't do as well. oskarchem
I remember somebody asking me to try and get a video of me flying, but I don't remember who it was, any who, I got to do a bit of solo today, so I filmed this Sorry about the bad quality, but I had to improvise something to hold the camera, and the wind shield is kinda "dirty" and it was a bit foggy, so any way enjoy

A business establishment demands that I pay $10 or $20 bucks to allow me to walk into their place of business so that I can then pay them for their services! I'm with you on the grapes-baccanalia-toga deal; I'll even supply my own fig leaf. Edited January 3, 2009 by hst45
TheSidewinder
I can see a $10 cover if there's a righteous band playing. But if not? Then yeah, they damn well better have the barely-clad waitresses feeding me grapes and ambrosia.
