Swany
One year ago I would have blanched at the idea of a democrat being in the White House, but there are reasons for everything. We are still free, there are bigger bigger problems than gun ownership and fireworks right now unfortunately.... which is the pretext behind all rights are taken away. Thing is, they have sky high expectations and huge issues to deal with, the balance of power hasn't fallen off the map this is just a correction. I'm sorry fellows. FrankRizzo
Swany, I think the idea that the "sky is falling" is a bit overused. Let's sit back and see what happens before casting ominous predictions of the future. If Obama can pass even 1/8 of the drivel he's spoken about, I'll be impressed.  ...meanwhile I'm putting food, weapons, and ammunition into sealed pails and stashing them around a 30mi perimeter. Yankie
Preparation for New Years Eve has started for me, I plan on having 50 to 100 ball shells ranging from 1" to 4" in one big cake. At the moment I am gathering mortars, my best source so far has been fabrics shops, however they only seem to have 3" tubes or small ones. Where else can you find cheap/free tubes in sizes such as 1.75" and 2.5"?
Brakkie
Have you tried local supermarkets and garden stores? They often have smaller cardboard tubes that they use for plastic wrappings or gift-wrappings. If you want bigger tubes try to bigger carpet stores. I got about 5 meters of 4" mortar with a 0,5" wall. I can jump on top of them they won't even buckle.

Here comes teh zombpacalypse! ..... Had to say it. Stash a few rounds for me, too, please.  The only good thing I see is the supreme court has already ruled the DC handgun ban to be unconstitutional.. I understand the illinois/chicago bans are next on their agenda.

Plastic wrap tubes and stuff like that; foil and what not. Fabrics like Hobby Lobby. I get my 2 inch from Hobby Lobby Fabrics. If you look for 4 inch ever go to Home depot or maybe Lowes and the carpet rolls are perfect. Be creative and think about it. I'm sure there are more and I'm not saying don't ask for help. BTW, if they ask what your using them for I always say a mailing tube.
tentacles
Big rolls of wallpaper come on 2.5" ID .162 (I think) wall parallel wound paper tubes. I had a crapton of them at one time, but I've pared down my inventory to like 16 gun length tubes. I think the rolls were a bit over 36" long originally, then I cut em in half. They're plenty strong enough for such little guns.

Yankie
Thanks, some good ideas there. I just bought 3 metres of 1.75" HDPE from the local water place, thas enough to make 8 mortars and for 20 bucks its not too bad. Normally costs 40-50 but I get a discount for some unknown reason, probably because I am a kid. The walls are about 1cm thick, its crazy!
mormanman
I need some help with something and I don't know how to go about it. I found a local supplier for Multi-K fertilizer. I don't know what the purest KNO3 Multi-K is used for and I don't know how to find out. I called them and they asking what are you using it for so I said as an AN fertilizer substitute. The only thing I could think of. What could I use it for to get the purest? For grass or crops? Edited November 7, 2008 by mormanman

oskarchem
I'm gonna be putting a ball mill together soon, and I'm watching this motor on eBay. Will it be good for a medium size ball mill (3-4kg)?  http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...em=200271945604 I'll translate the specs for the non French speaking: 230V-50Hz1.3A-0.18KW2840rpm Thanks! tentacles
3-4kg of powder (meaning a 10" or 12" jar), or 3-4kg of milling media?  .18kW is about 1/4 or 1/6 HP, it should be enough to turn up to at least an 8" jar. Depending on the media, a 10" or even 12" is do-able. I don't know the relevant math to compute the work required for the milling action, but I did some math a while back to figure the power needed to LIFT the jar at the surface speed of the jar.. and that's definitely going to take more power than rolling it (you're not lifting the jar when rolling, and not lifting all the media all the time). 1/6HP is enough to lift 5333lbs one foot in one hour (or 1lb 5333 feet). Just divide by the surface speed of your jar, and if your weight is less than the number you get, I guarantee it will have enough power. I did a bit more math, and a 1/6HP motor will lift a 32lb 8" jar at "70 RPM". I have a 1/4HP motor on my mill, and it doesn't even notice the jar, which weighs about 42lbs with the media. That said! I think that motor spins faster than you're going to want. You want a 1450 RPM, or lower if you can get it. The slower the motor goes, the less reduction you'll have to achieve with the belt/roller drive.

oskarchem
At 1/4 HP, it should have more than adaquate power. Are you going to use the worm gear that's on the shaft? The gear shaft is the rod coming out of the motor right? Sorry, but my mechanical English is not the best.  I was thinking 3-4kg of the total jar weight. So media included, but it looks like I'm gonna be able to put much more on. Many thanks about doing my maths!
Richtee
Good Morning! Better than coffee! Soo..last night I damped and screened a batch of BP. Din't bother to wear gloves. Washed up and had to roll a batch of smokes. This AM I am having a coffee and a smoke... all of a sudden Pfffft! my ciggie flames up and drops ashes in my lap! Evidently I din't clean out under my nails very well... "loaded" my own smoke! Sure wakes ya up fast! Tastes pretty bad... not at all like a fresh fired tube smells
Swede
Haha, that will wake you up! My Dad was always a nervous kind of guy, and he was a smoker. As a teenager, I had made some pretty respectable BP, and one day, I had an idea. Next to his "Archie Bunker" easy chair was an ashtray, partially full of cold ashes. I sprinkled maybe a teaspoon of BP into the ashtray, and camouflaged it with cold cig ashes. He comes home from work, tired, tense, fires up a cig, and sits down. I'm watching, trying hard not to laugh my ass off. With each flick of the ashes, I'm waiting for it to go POOF. No luck. The tension was unbearable. Finally he snuffs the cigarette out, and that's when the BP ignited. It made a nice smoke ball, a tiny WHOOF, and kicked some ashes out. I thought my Dad was going to kill me. It was worth it. Yankie
Another prank you could pull would be to take out the first cm of tobacco and put some BP, or something like silver fulminate or armstrongs mix or even flash powder, then re-fill the tobacco. although that doesn't sound too safe, best to experiment with small amounts to check hot embers dont go flying everywhere (potentially in someones eye) just a thought. You just shoved it into the smoke and POP! But yes, hots and ash DO fly. NOT something I'd recommend, unless yer real big and tough...and a bit dense. qwezxc12
Yeah, they still sell them as 'cigarette loads', but I think they're pretty neutered compared to what they used to do. I remember ones that looked like a bit of misch metal flint out of a Bic lighter and they literally blew the cigarette to shreds. The modern version looks tame in comparison:http://www.fakecrap.com/products/cigarette_loads.html
Swede
The new ones seem to have the power of about one half of one of those "snap-pop" silver fulminate + gravel popper things. Barely enough to be noticeable. I think in the old day, boys would literally carve a channel in a cigar, stick in a full-powered firecracker, fuse forward, and replace the tobacco. Evil old man fires up the stogie, and you end up with something out of a Road Runner or Bugs Bunny cartoon. People that use tobacco (like me) tend to be somewhat nervous to begin with. I would not be happy to have something like that go off in my face! But after a few nasty moments, I'd laugh too.

Yankie
You know what just dawned on me... Dragon Eggs! they are perfect. Not that I would be endorsing anyone to try it, cough cough. Even if u put them in the ash tray then a ciggy is bound to hit it.
