Mumbles Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 I personally think that MEK smells a little more sweeter, but I wouldn't be able to differentiate them unless side by side. They are pretty similar. If you're worried, boiling point will differentiate them easily.
Swede Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 MEK smells "fruity". Better than acetone. A wipe of acetone on a surface like glass vanishes within moments as it is so volatile. MEK is less so. If the can is labeled MEK, then that's what you got. I cannot imagine a reputable company mislabeling something like that.
TheSidewinder Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 And on a completely random note.... I snagged a 24" Acer LCD Widescreen monitor for a song (I think they had it mispriced, it had JUST come in), to replace my aging 21" CRT. The old one was a damn good monitor, but I am blown away by the difference of this LCD. Loaded up an RPG and damn near fainted when I set it to 1920 x 1200. And the ease of reading it makes my old eyes overjoyed.
tentacles Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 (edited) TS: If only companies making LCDs would actually bother to make improvements to them. It's damned hard to find one that does better than 18 bit color. Still, I've been using my 23" Acer LCD for a while now, it's liveable. same res as yours. Also, big gripe, they're all widescreen. That 24" widescreen has less screen than your old 21". /rant I'm kind of bummed, gonna spend like $2200 soon. Money just flies out the door, faster than you can make it sometimes. Upside is, in return they'll send me a WASP4 - I'm kind of looking forward to that part. Hopefully I'll get that big box of hemis soon.. Gonna need a few cases of gumtape, too. 50AE Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 (edited) Back in France for last year. I'm stopping practicing pyrotechnics while I'm here. Strict laws and expensive chemicals. But in the meantime, I will continue reading. I improved much my skills while I was in Bulgaria for the summer, though I couldn't film the good fireworks. Too bad So for 1 year without pyrotechnics, I'll do practice my other hobies. Computer case modding, electronics... There will be things to do Sidewinder, I don't know, but I always prefered CRT screens. LCDs don't have the same good color richness as CRT have. Also, my eyes get tired up very quickly with an LCD. Of course, the new ones improve with time. Recently, I bought one for our second PC at home, and it was quite good (contrast 2000:1). I calibrated it to not bother the eyes and it worked fine. jacob Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 tentacles, Look on the bright side, you're getting a Wasp please make sure to get pics and vids of it working. optimus, Thanks for posting those pictures, I really like the purple mine.
TheSidewinder Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Hmmm... this model has 3000:1 contrast. And for some reason the LCD has much better color than my CRT. (Maybe my old monitor really WAS starting to wear out...) Personally, I like a widescreen. I can view two complete webpages side-by-side and read them both easily. The text sharpness as I type this is boggling. I would have to be sitting noticeably closer to read it with the CRT. I've only played a bit with color adjustment. There are several presets that cover things very nicely for gaming and surfing.
Richtee Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Hmmm... this model has 3000:1 contrast. And for some reason the LCD has much better color than my CRT. (Maybe my old monitor really WAS starting to wear out...) <As I remove my newly aquired reading glasses...re-reading the LOTR trilogy :{)> The knock on LCD's is becoming baseless. The tech has come to the point of rivaling plasma... especially for our old, tired eyes... <Back on with the glasses...> Goodnight all!
tentacles Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 At the tip top of the line, sure, it's almost as good /better than plasma (which I'm not a fan of either), especially the new ones than use an LED matrix to light them, they dim areas of the screen that don't need to be bright, ingenious, and really gets the contrast up. The problem isn't color brightness with LCDs, it's that they make the colors TOO bright, all the time - they simply don't have the color range of a good CRT. Don't get me wrong, I've been using my LCD exclusively for a while now, and I'm going to toss out this 85lb 19" Trinitron soon, just don't have the space for it.
optimus Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 optimus, Thanks for posting those pictures, I really like the purple mine. That's one of my favourites too. Baechle System 7: Violet stars are amazing. I got a nice Samsung 22" with my new computer. It's freakin' sweet, Crysis Warhead looks incredible on it. Although for work, dealing with photos and such, there are only a few very high-end LCDs which are really up to the task.
justanotherpyro Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Hi everyone. Just letting everyone know that I'm still around and into pyro. I usually crap out for a while after the fourth when school starts etc...but then I always end up sauntering back into the hobby. Hope everyone still has all of their phalanges
Yankie Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 Have you ever wondered what happens when you leave corn starch/flour in the oven and forget about it when trying to make dextrin?Well wonder no more!http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/9986/img0739zv0.th.jpghttp://img220.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gifhttp://img220.imageshack.us/img220/570/img0740tz6.th.jpghttp://img220.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gifThe whole house was filled with smoke and the fire alarm didnt even go off. I probably should get a new one. Though when I pressed the test button it still beeped.
Pretty green flame Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 Damn, at first glimpse I thought, "WTF is wrong with this guy, taking pictures of shit"
Gunzway Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 I thought it looked like the aftermath of his day gutting various animals.Strangely enough, I don't think my corn starch can get burned. I left mine in the oven at max temp for over 5 hours without stirring and came back and it still wasn't a light yellow. Somewhat it works the way it is, as a slightly yellowish white.

What is the rec. temp anyway? On edit..never mind.. Dextrin Edited September 22, 2008 by Richtee
Yankie Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 I want to buy some parlon (3kg) but have a tight budget. It's far too expensive from the UK and I was wondering if any Americans could tell me where I can get a good deal (keeping in mind it has to be shipped to Australia.

mike_au Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Fredbert: There are two types of smoke detector, ionizing and photoelectric. A majority of smoke alarms are ionizing, they will detect small particle resulting from stuff that is actually on fire. Things that are just smoldering rather than an all out flame will produce bigger smoke particles which are far more likely to be detected by a photoelectric sensor. Some of the more expensive alarms will have both types of sensor built in. If you don't have one the expensive ones, it is best to have multiple alarms of different types. Different alarms also work best in different locations, but I don't remember the details (the local fire dept. probably have a pamphlet or something). As for the parlon, does it specifically need to be parlon or would PVC do? I got 1kg of PVC from a local pipe manufacturer just by asking for it.

MilkyJoe Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Could anyone tell me if this would be suitable for a wireless firing system? 6CH Momentary Remote&Receiver also mike, you gotta let me in on that local PVC place! thanks! ~Milky~

Chris Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 (edited) Could anyone tell me if this would be suitable for a wireless firing system? 6CH Momentary Remote&Receiver also mike, you gotta let me in on that local PVC place! thanks! ~Milky~ Yes, with some precautions. You need to build a good housing with terminals and an on/off switch before the operation becomes feasible. I think there is a tutorial in the tutorials section. Those units operate with mechanical relays which are touchy to impacts and might close the circuit prematurely. I have few similar firing units with e-match continuity check. Basically every time I connect to power source, I expect every cue to go off. That's the kind of precaution you should take with these. Many chinese units use these exact same receiver/relay boards. There have been some accidents in the US with them. However, I feel that as long as you are carefull, these are perfect for hobby use. I've asked the company if the could build similar boards with solid state relays, but that was not an option for them. On another note, if you would like a reasonably priced firing unit for about 12 cues. Happiness Fireworks sell them directly from China. Price including shipping should run about 150 usd for one piece. The newer versions also come with solid state relays. Edited September 23, 2008 by Chris
