flying fish
Speaking of college chemistry, I still have to take General Chemistry II before I graduate (I'm an applied physics major). It is getting extremely annoying because the time for the class is very unusual and never works with my schedule. Since I'm a senior in a very small department, I do have a lot of say in what time the physics classes are offered. But the amount of change in the schedule needed for chem II would have been drastic. It would have just turned into a bloody battle between me and the other 4 physics seniors! I told them I could take Chem II out as a guest student in an Ann Arbor area college during my co-op term. I would think UofM and/or Eastern Michigan probably have a fair few offering times for this class, and perhaps they even offer it at community college. For someone that left high school with a relatively strong chemistry background and intentions on possibly becoming a chemist, I strayed quite a bit to being a physics student that is struggling to get their chem courses in before graduation! Edit: as for those sparkeler bombs, isn't that sort of a "quickmatch effect", when you bring a whole bunch of sparkelers together, basically creating a sort of "pipe" for the flame? I discovered this by accident many years ago when I lit 6 jumbo sparkelers that I tied together. It didn't explode, but it burned through almost instantaneously and scared the crap out of me. I can see how it could be made to expode if you used a lot more sparkelers. And as far as that goes, I can also understand why a bunch of red hot wires flying everywhere would not be a good thing!!! Pyrohawk
Don't worry Richtee, I share your similar grumpy old man views on bikers too. All I have to say is to get equal rights, they have to take equal responsibilities. This means obeying traffic signs. He he.... I'll make a mental note to try to keep my motorcycle out of you guys' way. But in all fairness...I have more trouble with the other people on the road... They forget we are not bicycles so we have as much of a right away as a car has, we can't/won't get out of your way like a bicycle....A bike is heavy and fast. So don't pull out in front of us and think we can slow down like a bicycle. So many people pull out in front of me. And its hard to see a motorcycle sometimes, especially on multiple lanes, I'm guilty of thinking they snuck up or cut me off myself when I'm driving my truck instead of the motorcycle. I dunno what pyro porn is since I havn't been on here in a week or so but not sure I wanna think about it...haha Sparkler bombs are one of the stupidest things I have heard of... it just sounds like a bad idea... Though those Works Bombs are what is bad around my town. All the little townie kids talk about them.
flying fish
I don't want a pickle.... (Sorry, I have that song stuck in my head) I have some friends who are fairly responsible bikers, and I've thought about getting into it for a while. My mom would have a fit! There are also some bikers that think they are "above the law"...I guess because they are...seeing how they can pretty much dissapear into the sunset before the cop has time to put on his flashers...(or is that just a myth that cops don't catch bikers very easily?) Richtee
He he.... I'll make a mental note to try to keep my motorcycle out of you guys' way.For the record, I was speaking of bicycles. The ones on the road going 20 MPH. In a no passing zone. Next to a safty path/sidewalk on the side.
mormanman
I was thinking today while sorting some shell casings (for guns) and found some shot gun shells. They were 12 ga. and I got to thinking, "These would make good small plastic can shells." Are there any thoughts on this or do you think I should try it. mormanman
I mean like chop the metal/brass of and use the plastic. I would reuse the brass for something else though like casing into a rod in metal shop then lathing to rocket tool(s)

Altho..finding a solvent/glue for that plastic might be tough, and most certainly would be nasty stuff. Hmm on edit...you COULD crimp and hot glue the crimped end I guess... Pyrohawk
Hey everybody. Just dropping in....I was bored and was uploading and adjusting some files and I found some pictures that I'm not sure if I ever posted. BUt I thought this was neat and you guys would appreciate it. Swede
That's cool! What was it, a thermite script on sheet metal? It'd be cool to generate one of those black and white "outline/shadow" images using a computer, trace it onto sheet metal, and use your favorite compound to somehow etch it into the metal. FrKoNaLeaSh1010
That actually reminds me of what sulfuric acid on paper looks like. It burns through and leaves a little burnt section on the outside of the cut. I have only ever seen some splatter though not an actual drawing. It looks cool either way though. flying fish
I was just going through some of my old videos (out of boredom) and picking out the frame where you can see the "muzzle flash" from the mortar. It's kinda like having a camera flash - it illuminates everything around it! http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b330/WhyAreAllUserNamesTaken/Muzzleflash2.jpg
Pyrohawk
If ya use powders or thermite ya end up with splatters that burn the rest of the paper. And its just regular copy paper. I just mixed up a strong solution of water and KNO3 and used a little brush to "paint" it on. Let it dry and then lit one part of it and the flame will follow the lines....very very slowly I might add, and had to keep re-lighting it.... it kinda smolders like a cigarrette. I used a cigarrette to light it because a match or lighter just made the whole sheet catch on fire. The cigarette lets ya apply the heat exactly where ya want it. Hahaha I just read about it in one of the old pyro books...don't remember which one. Got bored so I tried it out one afternoon.
TheSidewinder
KNO3 was used in cigarettes up until quite recently, and for that reason: It kept your cigarette burning in the ash tray. It was allegedly introduced because customers were complaining that their cigarettes kept going out and they didn't want to have to relight them. (And, coincidentally enough, it also meant that you smoked more *OF* them and further lined the pockets of the tobacco executives. Imagine that....) qwezxc12
I tried a "set piece" out of left-over Go-Getter goo after filling all of the tubes I needed for a can shell earlier this summer; I wrote "fire" in script on a piece of cardboard with the left-over Red Go-Getter solution (AP / Al type bound with Parlon & MEK/Acetone), squirted from a restaurant supply condiment bottle. It lit right up, but the dried trail burnt too fast to actually see the whole word in fire before going out...still pretty cool. You could do neat designs in a set piece on say a 4'x8' sheet of plywood and make a really cool burning pattern with relatively little comp. Mumbles
So, I just possibly saw the dumbest show ever. It's called "hole in the wall". No, it's not about a truck stop bathroom. There are foam cut outs in a moving wall that you have to fit through, or you get knocked in water. That is it.
mormanman
Does anyone know the Farfelle star comp? Its a lovely star and now I want a four inch Farfalle shell. Maybe a three inch. I'll go with three and then think of something else for the four.

Swede
Serious question - I am an APC addict, I think that is recognized. On my days off, I probably log in 3 or 5 times per day, hoping to see new posts. 9 out of 10 times, it's an addition to this "Random" thread, and that's fine. Starting a new topic that doesn't particularly have substance or "meat" is discouraged. Sometimes, though, I see entries here that would make a fine stand-alone thread. I personally would like to see more activity, more posts initiated. Another observation, thread drift is pretty much recognized universally as undesireable. Why is that? I think that is the beauty of an internet discussion site. A topic that starts boring (like "How do I keep fire ants out of my shop?") sometimes turns into an educational/humorous/interesting discussion that has nothing to do with fire ants. Yet if a reply is not related to the title, it is frowned upon, and occasionally deleted. Sorry, I'm a bit bored this morning. I would love to see more activity here, and I think, over the 100+ pages of this gigantic thread, there have to be at least 30 to 40 topics that would have merit if posted separately. What do you guys think?

Ian Burrimond said a suspect was found in a nearby field and taken into custody. Deputies, he said, had no problem linking a suspect to the crime: "It seems the guy ran out of the house wearing only a T-shirt, boxer shorts and socks, leaving behind his wallet with his ID."Arrested was a 22-year-old Fresno resident. The spices and the sausage, Burrimond said, were taken from the victims' kitchen. He said money that had been taken was recovered, but the sausage was discarded and eaten by a dog. Mumbles
Mormanman, Farfalle is not a star. More like a hummer or spinner. Look on rec.pyro. The comp I use is 90% BP, 10% Ti(40-60 mesh). Swede I agree with you. When I can, I try to break worthwhile topics into threads of their own. This does help promote discussion and keeps it from wandering around. I do only have so much time though, and have a broken computer at the moment. I can get on to read and take care of general admin stuff, but the more time consuming activities like these become a strain on my limited computer time. I see the same thing happening in the aerial thread, and BP topics to an extent too. As far as topics wandering. To me there is a difference between getting off topic to randomness, and getting off topic to another worthwhile topic. Going to randomness is fine to a degree as long as it doesn't start to block out original purpose and severely take over the thread. Going to worthwhile topics makes it difficult to find something about it. Then again, gigantic threads like this don't make it much easier either. Going with Mormanman's example, if farfalle inserts were seriously discussed in the black powder thread, it may make it difficult to find initially. Then again we do have a search function for a reason. With the upgrade, it is a pretty powerful tool.
