Gottagotomoz
Thanks Wally. I looked for an MSDS and it only listed the hazardous component. It's manufactured by Transchem, and is sold under the synonym, Muriatic Acid. Any insight on this is appreciated.
nickle
This is a link to the MSDS in pdf format, its a different manufacture but the info is good. http://www.hasapool.com/msds/110-Muriatic%20Acid.pdf
Mumbles
It's water more than likely. Most the hardware store HCl I've gotten is slightly yellow as well due to Cl2 formation. It's normal.
Gottagotomoz
Thanks everyone, I haven't opened up the bottle yet, but I'm not too worried it's not water. It was $3, so I'm not too concerned. Thanks again
Swede
Gottagotomoz, the best HCl I've found is at the pool supply stores. None of it is reagent/ACS (high quality) stuff, but I can't think of too many pyrotechnic uses for HCl where the cruder stuff would cause problems. Pool stores have all sorts of interesting chems. I do have a pool, so over the years I've bought a lot of chlorine and such. They come in amazingly stout HDPE buckets; thoroughly cleaned, they make great containers for pyro chemicals. Gottagotomoz
Thanks Swede. I also have a pool, so I know the feeling. Speaking of pools, I just took a look at Calcium-Up, and it's 99% Calcium Chloride. I'll be tapping into this for desiccators Anyway, I'm hoping the HCl I bought won't cause any trouble, chemistry wise. I guess I don't understand why they wouldn't say HCl.........31.45%, Water......68.55%. Thanks again.
oskarchem
Well, this reminds me of the window washing stuff: Contains: Perfumes along with other chemicals... It dodn't say anywhere what they where. And we don't have MSDS here in France.
flying fish
Are you sure you don't have MSDS or at least something similar? If you call the company that makes the product, I would think they had some kind of documented safety data for it. I haven't gotten around to ordering any barium oxidizers yet, but I have been experimenting with more Barium Carbonate greens. I managed to get a halfway decent green using barium carbonate, lactose, Ammonium perchlorate, pvc cement, and red gum. The consistancy of the green color is poor (it flickers between green and yellow/orange) which I think suggests poor mixing of the chemicals, or not fine enough particle size. I will probably have to grind down the ingrediants more. The other issue is that they won't light in a stargun. In order to see what they would look like, I lit them with a torch on a shovel and then flung them across my yard (not quite as good as Swede and his leaf blower from the glitter thread)! Speaking of which, is it possible to make Barium Perchlorate with Ammonium Perchlorate and Barium Carbonate? And, assuming it is, are there any practical uses for Barium Perchlorate in pyrotechnics? Edit: I just found an ebay source for Silicon Powder, that is selling it by the pound, and apparently not charging hazmat fees. How could this be? Doesn't sound right...http://cgi.ebay.com/1-Pound-Silicon-Metal-Powder-Purity-99-200-mesh_W0QQitemZ190165182495QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116 I was about to buy the crappy 1 oz bottle just before seeing this. Now I just don't know what to do!

I looked at an MSDS: http://www.espimetals.com/msds's/silicon.htm ...and I didn't find anything particularily dangerous about it. I also still don't understand why Skylighter and Firefox both say it has to be shipped hazmat, yet this ebay supplier doesn't. Oh well... As long as I get my Silicon powder I will be happy. Although I also don't want to be putting UPS or mail workers at risk if there is something particularily dangerous about Si powder that I don't know about... I also was tempted to buy copper powder to further my copper metal blue star experiments. The stuff I got from skylighter is supposed to be around 60 mesh...and I believe the ultra-fine stuff sold by Fine powders may be something good to try...might be an improvement over the 60 mesh stuff. WarezWally
A while ago someone purchased something I was selling on eBay and then told me it was a accident. I told him where to go. Today, my head must of been with the clouds because I purchased something by accident on eBay. I clicked buy-it-now for a item to see the total with shipping (I was interested in the item, just checking prices) and somehow I clicked confirm order.... wtf indeed. It was a 1000ml flask, I was seeing how much I was being ripped off if I were to buy it locally. Luckily for me it was cheaper to buy it from the US and have it shipped over. I normally steer well clear of eBay when buying things like these. Could be worse

Niter
Not worth making a thread over so I'll put it here. Theres a ton of videos of kids being irresponsible with fireworks. Its a shame, and a danger to the hobby. This video however cracked me up: "It's OK man, don't move.." It doesn't get much dumber than this, but fortunately nothing got hurt but his pride
ActionTekJackson
Just a quick question some of you may be able to help me with, but what are good rates for getting some CAD drawings of an invention done, and how would I go about protecting my idea from the Drafting person or others involved in prototype construction? WarezWally
The mortgage crisis in the US seems to be getting worse, our dollar is worth 0.98 of yours now. I think thats a record.
oskarchem
Yep it's a 5 year record. 1 Euro is worth 1.58$, also a 5 year record. I wonder if it's going to go up any futher, caus if it is, I think I will be buying some hemis from the US .
mormanman
I was wondering if there was away to distill Sulfuric Acid safely?
asilentbob
With a good full ground glass borosilicate setup, yes. I would imagine that distilling under vacuum would help too as sulfuric acid has a pretty high boiling point. You can get by with a retort... But the losses will be high... and they (the losses/fumes) will wreck havoc in the area. ... However for most cases simply boiling water out of commonly available 93% sulfuric acid until its azeotrope around 98% H2SO4 works fine. Org chem exam tomorrow around 8am... been/will be up all night studying... afterwards though I'll be able to finally get around to doing some projects that have been on hold.
