WarezWally
Correct, 1M means there is 1 mole of X per liter. Most people buy technical grade nitric acid (68%) as its the most common or they make it themselves, so unless you buy it from a commercial supply house you really only have two options. Mumbles
You're correct in the statement of 1 mole per liter, but your mass measurements are off. Just look at the units and you will probably see why. 1M HNO3 has 63.012g of nitric acid in it. FYI, as a chemist I also get to play with liquid nitrogen and lasers. I'm not even a Physical chemist either. I'm not sure about the chemical engineering program, but I know that University of Illinois UC has an excellent chemistry program. I almost went there for my undergrad, but the campus just didn't appeal to me. Too spread out, too much in the middle of a corn field.
tentacles
You don't really need any specific concentration to nitrate the carbonates.. It is recommended to add a splash of H2O2 at the end to help complete the conversion. Not certain of the rationale there, just that it's supposed to finish the conversion more quickly/completely. Depending on the conc of nitric, you should definitely do it cooler rather than warmer so you don't waste any of the acid making NO2. 10% HNO3 is available as "Technaflora" pH down at some hydroponics shops. I bought a bottle a while back because their product used to be 30% but it has since changed (evidenced by the low SG) and so has their MSDS. oskarchem
Well, My step fathers birthday is nearly over, I was the barman, wow, I can tell you that it was the most sport that I have done in the last 3 months . I mean when you got a bunch of people ordering loads of cocktails, but you don't have enough glasses to majke them all, and your running to and from the kitchen washing glasses and all... Anyway, there were fireworks, but my parentn'ts decided to buy a big 13kg cake, since they wern't too keen on the fact that evryone knows that I do pyro, so the stuff I made will probably be going off tomorrow. I got a few summer jobs as a bartender at my paernts friends houses; so this way I can make myself a little extra money.. Anyway gotta go because I see that there are people *trying* to make them selwas drink's but somehow not succeeding very much...
flying fish
Nice... I'm suffering from impatience right now. I am starting up on some glitter tests again this year, and this time I'm actually using water like I was supposed to (last year I used NC laquer due to being impatient...and it actually worked most of the time, but the stars were somewhat crumbly). Today I broke a star (Winokur 40) in half and could tell that the inside was still moist. As you would probably guess, it did not glitter when I tested it, so now I will have to wait (im)patiently until it is actually ready to test... And it kind of sucks because I can't test where I live during the week (for work). Well...Unless my boss lets me fire some in the parking lot! frogy
After sending a very long letter to my chemistry teacher asking about Glassware deals\etc... I'm still waiting for a response. So I'd like to propose a similar question here. All my lab equipment pretty much broke last summer in a flood (glass shattered, stands rusty\shitty, etc...). So I'm going to have to buy practically everything over again (not that big of a deal though... All the other things were my dad's, so really I'm just buying it for the first time). Does anyone know a good place to get a good deal on nearly all pieces of glassware? Or a good deal average I need beakers, flasks, pipettes, test tubes, glass piping, thermometer (yes, even a thermometer), and the whole kit and caboodle. United Nuclear has some nice kits of glassware and equipment, and that's where I was planning from ordering, but anything cheaper, but still high quality, would be nice.http://www.unitednuclear.com/glassware.htmhttp://www.unitednuclear.com/equipment.htm I wouldn't also mind a site with cheap distillation setups for Chemical Engineering and possible Organic Chemistry courses I will be taking in the future... Nothing to fancy for now... Something for distilling acids would be nice. A simple retort, Liebig, or Alihn should be fine... Should I plan on getting all my flasks with Ground glass fittings? or have separate ones for distilling\general use (this ones completely my decision, but input on it wouldn't be bad). Thanks for any advice\help...
tentacles
There's a lady selling stuff on ebay out of florida, she's very reasonable. Let me look this up... "Best science supplies and equipment". I can PM you her email. Very good prices, and just tell her what you want in an email and get the pricing/shipping there, it will be cheaper than ebay. She replaced a condenser 3 times that broke in shipping! Top notch CS! http://stores.ebay.ca/Best-Science-Supplies You might ask her if she has any more of those ammonia distillation sets (1L) like I bought (see nitric acid thread). It was like $130 with two stands, 1L RBF (with gooseneck and ground fitting to fit the included graham condensor). I'd like to add that her shipping prices are ridiculously reasonable. I paid shipping to Canada last time, and it came to $16 for a couple beakers, condenser, thermometer, some funnels... Normally just speaking about shipping to Canada costs you $15! asilentbob
I don't know what kinda friendship or understanding you have with your chem teacher frogy, but its possible though unlikely that that kinda question would freak her out a bit. I've got organic chemistry chapters to read and practice problems to do. Gotta find the time... Then the motivation. Finally got my GPS module working and with google earth no less. Free global directions so long as I have wifi. Its a Pharos GPS-500 SIRF Star III module. Really quick fixes. Lovin it. Somewhat considering getting a new phone that has SIRF star III GPS and decent wifi. I'll probably wait a bit, some nice new phones are going to come out pretty soon. My built in wifi is ok... but its not working well with a few programs, so I'm considering splurging for a nice wifi card. Orinoco or Senao probably. PGI has been in the back of my mind. Seems like its been an aweful long time since I got a bullitin. Wheres my convention registration stuff? Hopefully I'll be able to get that taken care of like tomorrow ish. Seems I'm going nocturnal again :/... Its 5am now... More projects as always. What a surprise. Gah... ok... thats enough for today. Time for sleep. Insomnia sucks. Don't like meds. WarezWally
I was thinking about setting up a distillation setup but I'm having trouble figuring out how to connect everything together (non quickfit gear). I have a liebig condenser coming in this week along with a few boiling flasks (300ml, 1000ml) and other assorted goodies. Any suggestions? I want to use if for distilling nitric acid, that rules out rubber stoppers with either glass or teflon tubing.
frogy
I didn't find anything on that Ebay Store cheap (compared with United Nuclear) even if it has free shipping. The prices were reasonable, but the owner was trying to sell "economical" grade equipment in some cases.... Come on, $28 for a stand...
tentacles
Frogy: Like I said, email her. Hell, she doesn't even charge the prices she lists on ebay - when she sends an invoice it's always less than the total. Here's an example.... I bought some 75mm glass funnels from her for $1.75 each, which are listed at $7.75 on the ebay store (with free shipping on ebay). Her prices aren't much cheaper than the cheapskate places on ebay, but when something breaks she *will* replace it, I bought something from another vendor and it took SIX MONTHS to get a refund for a $15 (2L) beaker. The people that were bad to deal with was some place with Houston in the name. Bottom line is, if you don't want to do the footwork, then you're not entitled to complain later. frogy
I e-mailed her... and she said that there were no discounts. The store is really expensive... When was the last time you ordered from them?
FrankRizzo
Tenacles, you're thinking of Scientific Equiment of Houston. They're the guys that packed that 2L beaker so badly, eh? Well, I'm glad I didn't take advantage of their 20% off/free shipping sale last month then. Places like that don't deserve my business.

frogy
Wow... Why didn't you tell me about Scientific Equipment of Houston before... Their selection is wonderful and dirt cheap... Though shipping to you (Canada) may be pricey... I don't know if you were talking about the Ammonia distillation setup there http://www.agile-fx.com/servlet/the-1822/A...il?sfs=ecb15dd1or the one on eBay. Would that one (above) work for nitric? SEoH has a nice 300mm Alihn condensor, but I'd have to find the angle pieces\glass stoppers elsewhere... I'm at about $40 less than before with more of the things I need than on UN. BPinthemorning
My parents cleaned the hard drive on my computer (they do it routinely every year...) and I lost all my internet favorites. The one I find I am really missing is one with the title "Public Files". It was basically a collections of armature uploaded pyro pics... If anyone knows what I am talking about, a link would be greatly appreciate!

frogy
If I remember correctly, there's some Firefox addon called Foxmarks that saves you addons and lets you synchronize them over the internet... I don't have it though... I always keep a record of a few files on my flash drive... Not that most bookmarks are that hard to remember, but occasionally I'll forget Woulter Practical Pyrotechnics, which I reference pretty often (to the noobies). asilentbob
BPinthemorning, I'd recommend that you email yourself with things like that to back them up. Then tag them or title them in such a way that you can easily sort them out from everything else. For instance in gmail I label things "archive" - "description" - "date" when I email them to myself, then search bookmarks or whatever to get them again. For larger things I burn them to CD/DVD/DVD-DL ocassionally. Another possibility would be to get a portable version of firefox along with the plugins you like and bookmarks you use on a USB flash or small HDD drive. (Recommended to have proxys and such too.) Flash drives are slower but smaller and have no moving parts. Where as mini-HDDs are faster, bigger, and have moving parts. Per GB mini-HDDs are cheaper and offer much larger capacities.
