jacob: Bonny's neighbor has a forge with a furnace that can melt steel. He's willing to let us use it if we bring the propane. I think the gent in question has a crucible for brass, not 100% sure. If not, I'll soon have a welder and can make one out of SS. I know where I can get some decently large tubing or just weld up a box out of 1/8" sheet.

Frank: Ok, those videos are just exciting.

On a very side note... Apparently almost all the helium on earth is the product of radioactive decay of natural isotopes in the rocks that make up this rock. So its kinda like oil in that it comes from the ground from the decay of other things... however it will continue to be formed where as oil... not so much...

Essentially got myself a job today. Yay for money... boo for less time to do other things... Still might register for a summer class  ...

Looks like I might set up a computer I'm not really using to be a 24/7 torrent seeding box... I'd have to limit upload rates based on time of day here and such. Perhaps 20kbps day and cut loose at night... And I'd have to make sure not to upload things to people that my ISP wouldn't like... but otherwise... could be pretty nice... I cleaned it out and put some basics on it... I need to install and configure a few more programs, then I might give it a test run seeding something random and copyright free...

Found a cheap model HAM radio I may get (Yaesu FT-2800M). Cheap as in I could get it after a few hours of work on a busy Friday. The Technician class HAM radio operator license exam looks really easy. Might have found a place to take it next month that is relatively close.

I dissolved about 300+ starch packing peanuts in water in a 2L bottle today... Might nitrate, dry, and dissolve the result in acetone and see how it fares as a binder for stars, etc.

I think we'll need to make up a SS crucible, as when I tested some brass melting, we used a mild steel one. A pc of 3 or 4" heavy wall pipe or sq. tube witha welded base would be ideal... I'll check for the height, as the forge is quite small.

For casting into a pc of pipe, here a few possible solutions:

-Weld a flange on one end of the pipe so the brass could be pressed out. Just be sure to leave some empty space at the top to put the pushrod in.

-Slot the pipe down one side, weld 1/4" nuts on outside of pipe on both sides along the slot. Drill the threads out of the nuts on one side only.Use the bolts to hold the mold closed, then thread in bolts using a washer or anything as a stopper to spread the pipe.

Does anyone know a website where I can order class C fiberglass mortar tubes? I have three sites I can get HDPE from, but I need like 50 of them and fiberglass would be neat.

Happy B-DAY T_S - hope you got fireworks!

Bonny: I'll check out what the salvage yard has for SS. I dread hacksawing a big chunk of tubing though. My FIL has a battery sawzall but I doubt it could take on SS tubing.

Thank you, everyone.

Yes, indeed, I'm 53 as of... well, yesterday now.

Some days I feel 30-ish. Some days I feel 130. Ish! :D

No fireworks. I live in town and the only safe time to shoot them is on the 4th of July when there's safety in numbers, or the cops throw a hissy fit. ;)

A couple neat videos:

Making steel scuba tanks:

Making aluminum tanks:

A while ago I downloaded a season of 'How It's Made', very informative show.

I like watching metal machining videos.

Some sort of ornament on a CNC lathe

Chess piece on a CNC lathe

Rocket made on CNC lathe and mill

Sidewinder, congrats! I know the feeling, thought. "you're only as old as you feel.", hell, that makes me 106!

It really is funny though. I still ski like I did when I was in my 20's,... except that I blew out a knee three years ago doing stuff I've ALWAYS done, and I went down hard once this year and put a hairline fracture in my left hip. Christ, did I just say "I fell and broke a hip." Jesus, pin a note to my lapel and sit me in a wheelchair at the dog track. I only hope I live long enough to vote for John McCain...he seems like such a nice boy.

RANDOM:

A few months ago I posted asking about "flashing cores" everyone wrote it off as flash cores that went off at different times and I didn't have any videos of it.

So here's another video the flashing cores start at 00:33

These could deserve there own thread in the chemistry section, but I rather just post them in random :P

Does anyone know of possible reactions that you can use Calcium hypochlorite (Pool chlorine) for...

I believe mixing Calcium hyprochlorite (Ca(ClO)2) with isopropyl alcohol (C3H8O) produces hydrogen and chlorine gas. Does anyone know if you could bubble this through water to form 10-30% HCL or stronger?

Though Ca(ClO)2 forms CaCl2 while exposed with HCl, I believe the gases should still remain mostly HCl...

I wish I knew the products of this reaction to determine if HCl would be produced, or mainly chlorine gas...

Also on the chemistry note... I figured I might get a better response here when I ask, Does anyone know where I can buy some NH4NO3? Does Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware, or any other big-wig\stores likely to be near me have NH4NO3?

I'm aware that 34-0-0 is AN, but I'd like to have a source give me a background of knowledge so I don't have to ask around much, since the ignorant think all AN goes to a bad cause.

I don't think you have either of your products right.

The first with the hypochlorite and isopropanol should in no way produce any Cl2, H2, or HCl. I'd say acetone if anything. Actually, it might go all the way to chloroform if an excess of hypochlorite is present.

The second, with the HCl and hypochlorite should form chlorine gas and some HCl I beliveve. It's an equilibrium between HOCl + HCl H2O + Cl2

Is there any reason you can't just buy muriatic acid? It's already 31.45%. Or were you looking to generate Cl2?

Here is an very important information to us all: I just learned that BP is very very unstable and that it can detonate under the touch of a feather!! :D. ANd that KNO3 can detonate spontaniusly. So Pudi, be careful with that 50kgs of KNO3 you have!! :D

PS: Thanks to 50AE for finding this, gave me a good laugh...:

If you can get a pc os SS tube or pipe I can cut to length at work on my industrial bandsaw. The forge is quite short so we may need to make a few 3-4" tall crucibles...

Bonny: He has some like.. 10" pipe, about 3-4" tall. There was some big rect. tubing also I think but from what I saw we'll probably just having to weld something up.

Yeah maybe if the feather happens to be under massive pressure and heat. That's a good find lol. But why is the link cached?

I think 10" is a little big for the oven... I think best size for tube or pipe would be in the 4-6" size, cut to 3 or 4" tall, I'll measure the height of the forge one of these days.

Other wise, flat stock and we'll just weld up a box.
