Bob, I'm not good with acronyms. I never really thought that they would be on google either. Sorry about that.

ActionTekJackson......we may have a problem here man, I just noticed ya stole my avatar ;) .

What is the comp for the GE Silicon rockets? I'm just ccurious as to what the formula is. But I agree, as Mumbles said I'm sure saran or Parlon would be fine. Never worked with Parlon much, but I have interchanged saran and PVC many times. Just account for the differences in Chlorine content. Unless PVC is the fuel also...that would throw a wrench in..... might mess up the effect.

I've always heard the comp was really messy, didn't strobe, and was kind of a crappy propellant.

Anyway saran would be my first choice to replace it, but parlon may work as well and improve the strobe.

Yea, this is true, it is more of a chuffing rocket, than a strobe. I have gotten it to fly however, and have come along way with my consistency and patience with pyro since those days, so I'm hoping to give it another shot. However, I always just left out the PVC before and it was hard to get to fly, they're supposed to work with standard 1lb bp tooling, I never got that to work. So now I'm thinking it may have been the lack of PVC. Pyrohawk, this is the formula, "Blue strobe rocket propellant

Comments: The GE silicone II is noted for having an ammonia-like odor, where the GE silicones smell more like vinegar. The dimensions of the rocket made with this propellant were 1 1/8 inch ID, with a 1/2 inch core.

Preparation: Mix the copper oxide, PVC and silicone first, in a plastic bag. Then mix in the ammonium perchlorate. The stuff is said to be somewhat crumbly, and presses well.

As for the avatar I was really confused earlier too, most of the time I don't read names of the posters but associate who says what by their avatar, including myself, I was really confused today when you were asking about the most powerful rocket composition, lol, could not remember posting that. Guess I'll have to look for a new one... too bad too, this is a good one ;-)

*edit* avatar fixed, better? ;-) *edit*

I have a quesion, has anyone ever had a problem with lighting the Passfire TT comp, for me it was very hard to light, my blowtorch had problems with it, and it didn't really spak a lot...

Is there something different from the passfire version from the original Shimizu version? 44/44/6/6

You're almost as bad as mormanman with details on this.

You did ball mill it right? This greatly improves lighting. It was dry as well too, correct? And it's not supposed to spark on the ground. It's extremely under oxidised, which leaves charcoal behind which then burns in the air making the tail.

From the sounds of it, the main problem was you were trying to light the comp, and not a star made from it. You HAVE to wet it for it to preform as it should. The dry comp of TT, as most charcoal streamers, will barely burn on it's own, but once bound and dry it is a whole different composition so it seems.

I really should make these continually asked, but perhaps not so obvious, questions into a sticky at some point.

Sorry for not giving the details; anway, I dont't think it difers, but: The comp was milled, I had made 2 comets from this composition; both were duds.. So I had remembered that I had a small star that I had made from it and tried to light the comp and it didn´t work.

Yes the comp was dry because it was in the heating foom for like 2 days.. When I come back I'll try to remak a comet..

Hahaha much better! I would have changed my own avatar but I'm pyrohawk (a pheonix basically) and mainly I've grown fond of this one.... so fond in fact I have it tattooed on my right shoulder along with the words "One who hath smelt the smoke" :P So its a little late to change my symbol!

I need to get a hold of some Ammonium Perchlorate.... I need to restock a lot of my stuff, but I'm like never home so I can't justify it. Maybe in summer....

God my school is so stupid a kid won an award for coming up with the 4-way catalytic converter he basically drew plans by which CO2 emissions would be disposed of by burning magnesium in the converter THE IMPRACTICALITY!

Well, it has been a long time since I posted here.

I'm trying to start a topic, but I receive an error describing that I do not have permission to access this feature each time I click on the "Post new topic" button. Anyone know why?

Anyone here familiar with "lifecasting?"

I'm strongly considering setting up a hiking backpack with a car battery, inverter, laptop (+ its battery and AC adapter), wifi via USB dongle/cardbuss card/or built in, a headset with microphone, and a usb webcam or DV cam that can act as a web cam. So basicly you have how ever many hours of power to walk around and stream live audio and video to people who are following it however your streaming it... like ustream or stickam...

Could be a cool way to show non-club members what they are missing out on...

It would also be extremely appropriate for Maker faire... I really hope that comes back to Austin, TX in the near future...

All I really need to get such a system working based on what I already have available to me:

*12v car battery or a deep cycle battery or something

*USB webcam and get the wifi cardbuss card working on a old laptop...

OR

*USB extension hub and USB wifi dongle...

Sounds interesting, I once had a webcam mounted on the roof for shits and giggles once. Was pretty cool watching my backyard from hundreds of kilometers away.

Sadly it didnt last to long up there :)

This morning I woke up to news that "overnight, there were massive tremblings, centered in Illinois , felt as far away as Ohio and Kentucky," but I was surprised to find out that it was an earthquake. My first thought was "Cool, cplmac put up a new rocket last night!"

Anyone have any idea how much 50x 2" x 1/4" ID tubes would weigh?

1/8" wall 2" long and 1/4" ID parallel wound x 50 = ~110g

Wow, I can't believe this thread made it to 184 pages!

None of you probably remember me because I haven't posted here in a long time, but I have gotten out of the pyro hobby unfortunately. I still like to lurk around here every once in a while though. I love to see what all of you guys are up to, I have to say I am quite impressed with some of the stuff you guys have built, keep up the nice work.

Can someone give me an idea of where to get strontium nitrate. I had a little but I just ran out. I've become dependent on skylighter and ebay and there is this chemical site I know of but it's kind of a hassle to order from there. Where do you get your strontium nitrate?

I got my last batch from skylighter, but theirs isn't the good stuff from Barium and Chemicals. I'm rather of the opinion that it's got some chloride contamination, it's a bitch to get good dry, lightable stars out of it.

EDIT: here's something truly random - is mucilage (gum) glue suitable for use as a binder when thinned? As a substitute for gum arabic/etc in rolling stars, and whatnot. Opinions? It's certainly cheap enough.

Did you order 5 pounds from skylighter? Thats my problem, three would last me a long time. Is there anything special I have to go through for B and C other than product literature request form? How did you think their prices were?

And that mucilage seems like it would be worth a try, looks like it's in the same family(Polysaccharides) as dextrin but I'm always wary of anything I haven't heard of anyone using before.

I have 10lbs I got from skylighter.. :/

B&C, I believe requires a license. I've heard their prices are high compared to other places but the quality can't be beat. Drum quantities, I'm sure.

Yes, license is required, and likely a minimum order. 500lbs at the very least I would imagine. The price is higher than Service, but significantly less than you'd be paying from skylighter. Around a buck a pound on Ba(NO3)2, and $1.50 to $2 a pound on Sr(NO3)2 IIRC.
