justanotherpyro
I almost forgot this place existed. I haven't did any pyro in a long time but am looking to get back into it all. I've just been doing other hobbies as of late.I recently came back too. I left it for a year and half due to school, but it is so addicting that it drew me back in in no time when I had the capacity to do it . On another note I now have a place to shoot some 6" shells, as long as the relationship lasts.
_DB_
We're always glad to have you around _DB_.Why thanks! I don't know how deep I'll get back into this, but I'm going to do a few things at least. I think I'll start by finally ordering some proper mortars. I'd love to get good into shell making like I never did. I still don't have a proper work space to do so or a star roller though. oskarchem
Hi, just wondering, would it be possible to make this star not using the saran resin?Because I can't find any. perchlorate 34%barium nitrate 35%saran resin 12%hexamine 15%dextrin 4%
GalFisk
Hi, just wondering, would it be possible to make this star not using the saran resin?Because I can't find any. perchlorate 34%barium nitrate 35%saran resin 12%hexamine 15%dextrin 4% Only if you use anther chlorine donor instead, such as parlon or PVC. I don't know if parlon can be substituted directly, but for PVC you need to change the ratios somewhat, since PVC also acts as a fuel (I don't know how much changing is needed). Is the perchlorate K-perch or something else? asilentbob
If im not mistaken saran acts a bit like a fuel too... I would try a mix of parlon and PVC... Or maybe straight parlon then adding a bit of another fuel...
shagaKahn
Randomly: Just got a 1-lb batch of magnalium -200, and it came broken up in a dozen separate small ziplocks. Is there a reason not to store this in a larger quantity? Know it's reactive--why else would I have gotten it--but is it so reactive it has to be separated into tiny portions like this? Ask cause I just dumped it all together in a 1-lb jar--but I don't wanna blow the roof off. Thanx y'all,m
InRainbows
Shaga, I think you'll be fine. Probably just a matter of bad shipping, MSDS just says to not use water, and Skylighter thinks it's fine to ship in 1 lb. batches. Also, asb, saran acts as a fuel and chlorine donor, but so does parlon.
jacob
InRainbows is right, just keep it fairly dry and watch how you use it in compositions and you'll have no worries.
Mumbles
Parlon however is a flame retardant so it will slow the burning of the composition, and lower the temperature. This is what makes it so good for blue and purple. Slower burning and lower temperatures mean less light intensity.
shagaKahn
Kool. Thanx for the responses. And hey Mumz, glad you mentioned that about parlon in connection with blue and purple stars, 'cause I've been working for months to get a good purple and never thought of trying to adjust the parlon ratios. I kept trying to add more blue (copper) or less red (strontium) but all I got was a pink flare or at best a kind of hot magenta. Gonna go spike the parlon right now. asilentbob
Been busy... Addicted to the computer... but to getting other things set up... For instance... I now have a (few) GPG (essentially PGP) keys... so if anyone has reason for encrypted/signed correspondence with me... its easier. If anyone is interested in getting into GPG/PGP... I'd recommend getting the latest version of GPG... its free... then getting WinPT, a GUI interface for GPG (which is actually command line normally), and if you use gmail get the FireGPG plugin for firefox. ... So if your someone that uses GPG/PGP and would actually use it in emails... email/message me... Have a pyrotechnic artists of texas event coming up near the end of march... along with various other things coming up fast... just tons of shit... don't know if ill do anything... *Stuff I'm trying to get figured out and set up:*Win programs for an 8Gb USB drive (like portable firefox + extensions, tor, winrar, GPG stuff, GIMP, VLC, x-chat2 mobilized, miranda IM, utorrent, wireshark, etc.)*Would like to get a nice bootloader put on the 8Gb drive along with like damn small linux, a penetration testing distro, and an anonminity focused distro, maybe that portable winxp lol...*Tor + proxy stuff figured out for this computer... Just getting more things in place before I feel like its really ready to be taken to college and such.*Winamp AVS overlay mode... worked on older computers, but havn't been able to get it to work under XP or vista :'(*Chemistry labs for chem to substitute for the otherwise boring standard ones...*Would like to put in some hours of work on my site Oh and apparently 3d flip or whatever it is for vista is already installed on my computer... although its vista home basic... as i understand it home basic isn't supposed to have it... but its pretty retarded... so meh. rocket
Went to bunnings today and to my surprise found some potential 12” paper hemis and 24” though I'd never have a use for em. http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k300/ber0006/Image007.jpghttp://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k300/ber0006/Image003.jpg Found some coloured flame outdoor lanterns as well which was interesting. Z ya in the sky,sThis is supposed to make a great purple, even though it seems to have no chlorine donor.. I wonder if that was a transcription error on my part? Electric purple chem %SrCO2 12AP 68CuBz 8MgAl 200-400mesh 5Hexamine 7dextrin 4 Looked it up.. apparently this is Bleser's purple metallic fueled star. I was making a couple little red flares earlier (I've gotta light something, dammit!) and considered making this up. Not sure I'm willing to use up my AP though, such a limited supply I have. I may try this with KP and make a tiny AP comparison batch.
oskarchem
I *think* the AP is the chlorine donor, because it has Cl any way I know that potassium chlorate is a Cl donor; but could someone verify this?

Firefox can sell you all the AP you want. Occasionally they have a special on 10 or 30 pounds at a time. I've got about 40 pounds of it at the moment. birdhouse62
sorry for asking a new question , but i bought some 1/4 inch steel shots from walmart for $3 to use as my media. its not stainless, its just steel ( if that matters). can i use it in my ball mill or is it not safe?
oskarchem
MOD EDIT: MOVED THE ABOVE QUESTION AND THIS ANSWER TO THE RIGHT PLACE. If it is not Stainless steel (special type of stainless steel 334 I think it was) no you canot use it. But if your milling only Aluminium then I guess you can use it. Mumbles
You have the latest codec and quicktime, right?
TheSidewinder
psyco, If you're using Windows Media Player it won't work. I have same issue. There's no Quicktime codec for Media Player, as far as I'm aware. Mumbles is right, Quicktime (or Nero Player I think) will work. M
qwezxc12
Depending on what mediaplayer you use, you could use the QT Lite codec:http://www.codecguide.com/qt_lite.htm"Media Player Classic and ZoomPlayer are capable of playing QuickTime files by using the QuickTime framework that gets installed by QT Lite. Other players will require DirectShow filters to be able to play QuickTime files." I personally use ZoomPlayer for media/DVD playback and it works for me. I also can playback in Windows Media Player 10.
TheSidewinder
Actually, I was referring to the XP native "Windows Media Player" (WMP), an adequate but pedestrian way to view clips, IMO. That QT Lite looks like a decent solution for many. It isn't a codec for WMP, though, and some folks (not here, thankfully) are barely able to navigate their way through that.
