ST1DinOH Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 I have not come across a thread for girandolas, but made my first one and let her fly on new years eve and I, and every one else was impressed with it, 12 inch diameter, 6 end burner and man that thing kept going, and dang it if I didnt make a video of it, well number 2 is made, headers on all rockets and I will make sure I video this one Pic forth comming i would love to see this. more importantly i'd love to see a video of one being made. i know that making the drivers using whistle comp can be dangerous (compressing the comp into the tube) so i'd like to see a vid of that too. there is a very nice pic tutorial that was just put up not long ago on skylighter showing how to do everything. but a vid is nice for that alternative perspective. can't wait to see the vid of it in action, what are the headers on your second one? color breaks or salutes? there is a very nice 1.4 cake from golden bear that topps it's girandola with 8 willows. the result is very nice as you can see: http://www.pyrouniverse.com/gallery2/data/...Big_Fighter.wmv the package calls the willows brocade crowns and the video does not do it justice. was standing right under one on saturday and it did a great job of filling the sky.
Aimlesspayload Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 http://www.pyrouniverse.com/gallery2/data/...Big_Fighter.wmv kinda off topic, but can someone explain to me why these videos never work for me? very frustrating! I'm using firefox btw. also, I too would be interested in seeing a video tutorial...
hondo Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 I use the std black power for end burner rockets, I know you can make whistle rockets just have not yet. the headers on this one are 2 inch shells, 2 salutes and 3 chrans, Pics will be comming when I get home and I cannot open the video either
FrankRizzo Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 You fellas need the proper codec to view the video. Search Google for "k-lite codec pack" and download the standard one. Once installed it should allow you to view almost any video.
firetech Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 I have recently made a 5'' girandola with eight 1/4'' x 2'' vertical drivers made with 1/16'' nozzle and 2 horizontal drivers made the same as the veritcal ones. I used a carboard ring from an oatmeal container. All used straight bp.
Mumbles Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 I picked up the Incomplete book of girandolas a while ago. It's a good read, and has a lot of good information. I was thinking about making some small rockets (1/2" or so), and making a lightweight frame about a foot across. Possibly a reinforced ice cream bucket. I've made mini-girandolas with Jim Biersach before. I think I can outperform commercial class C rockets. Looks like I'll have to get working on some ice cream......darn.
hondo Posted February 12, 2009 Author Posted February 12, 2009 I make my round frames using maple banding that you get at lowes or home depot, its 25 foot long and about 3/4 inch wide and 1 mm thick. this stuff is used for edging plywood,,,, and I make my rings 1 foot diameter, kind of tricky to make the rings using a iron to heat the glue on the banding and roll it around a form and get it glued to it self, it has hot melt glue on it already, , its 6.95 a roll and I can make 2 wheels from one package and I use 3/8 inch dowels for the cross members, popcycle stick to attach the bottom and top frames together so probably 10 bucks in the frame, still trying to come up with a cheaper frame, like heavy construction paper or ever card board cut into 3/4 inch strips round around a frame and glued. I attach six one pound rockets fitted to the frames at a slight angle. I will get some pics soon
psyco_1322 Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 How about we discuss the rockets used to fly the girandolas. End burners are used generally right? What happens if I slap on some core burners?
FrankRizzo Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Psyco, If you used stiff frame materials (like aluminum), you could probably get away with it. Otherwise, I think the quick thrust would twist the frame.
hondo Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 here are some pics of my frame and completed girandola as far as the rockets, end vs core, I would think the core burners would burn out too fast for a good effect, but hey you try it and see what happens
Mumbles Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 If anything, it might be cool to have core burners as a second stage in the lift. After it gets a few hundred feet off the ground, and already has some good upward motion. Then have the core burners kick in and bang, zoom, straight to the moon! You probably should name it Alice. I bet you old guys thought I was too young to make that reference, huh?
