firetech Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 I'm working on multi-break canister shells and was wondering if anyone could possibly give me instruction on the correct method on making these types of shells. Or if they could direct me to a site that would provide a decent overview of the construction. My method right now is to start with the bottom shot (which is flake black powder with 5% al added since I don't have fp), which is spiked and pasted. Then, kraft which is at least 2 times the length of the shell is rolled around it 2.5 times with the fuse facing the empty end and leaving 1/8'' at the bottom of the salute to glue the karft to the shell. The extra room in the kraft tube is used for the next break which a cannula is inserted over the fuse of the salute and stars are packed around it, break is inserted into the cannula and it is removed. Excess room is filled with bp. A chipboard disk with a time fuse is then placed on the stars and break and the kraft is cut into flaps which are folded down onto the disc. The process repeats for all additional breaks. Feel free to ask if i did not explain my method well enough. Thanks
Goofy Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Or if they could direct me to a site that would provide a decent overview of the construction. I'm doing the same thing right now. It's been over ten years since I made the last one so I'm a little rusty. Working on a 6" 3-break with bottom shot Maltese style. A resource I can't recommend highly enough is Passfire.com. It's worth it's weight in sherical Ti! The archived articles will give you a VERY through pictorial and written discription of EXACTLY what you need to know. Also Pyrotechnica - the Fulcanelli papers - Pyrotechnica IX (1984) and Pyrotechnica XI (1987) Get video when you shoot it!
Mumbles Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 I completely agree with Goofy on this one. Passfire and the fulcanelli papers are the best resources. This one is also good for small shells:http://www.wichitabuggywhip.com/fireworks/2inchsalami.html 1 design note though. Use only full turns when rolling the cases. 2 turns or 3 turns. That way the wall is even. Otherwise, you'll get one side of the shell weaker than the other. With only 2 or 3 turns, it could make a difference. You don't say this, but you'll want to spike each break after it's all closed up, and before the next can is rolled on top, but only vertically. I personally build in a slightly different way, but your method sounds excellent. I am also building a few big salamis here in the near future. I'll get pictures along the way. I build them a bit differently, but the general idea is still there.
firetech Posted January 8, 2009 Author Posted January 8, 2009 Yes, that is one thing i failed to mention. Each additional break is spiked vertically only. then the next break is attached. Im trying this on a small scale before i move up so hopefully it goes well. I'm going to subscribe to passfire very soon. I have had multiple guest accounts for forum discussion and its about time i get my own account.
