"Fair" price for quality aluminum powder?

Weigh in with your opinions/favorite provider. I've been seeing it anywhere from $18 a pound up to $30+ per pound for German/Indian. I think the last time I bought it it was ~$20 a pound give or take $2.

$18-20/lb is what I've paid, cash on the table, no S&H :D

Yeah, 18-20 is pretty fair generally. You have to remember that it's not a very widely used chemical. There is a big initial investment, and it goes relatively slowly in sale. It only costs $6-8 by the drum.

Like I said, it has a pretty specialized use, so be careful and do lots of reading.

Wow, I want to buy a drum for $8!! Where can I find one? :P

Beware, there are also guys relabeling 200 mesh spherical "5413-H Super" and cheating people.

From what I've read at the factory site, they make the stuff for pyrotechnics, and that's it, so it doesn't see a lot of volume production. I do agree with the $18-$20 for the real stuff, and I'd also suggest (keep in mind) that the day is coming when real pyro dark becomes MUCH more restricted in the U.S. It's already impossible to get in many countries.

I'm not suggesting stocking up. Well, maybe a few pounds.

I have a drum you can buy for $8, Swede. If you want it filled with chemicals, though, that will run you an extra $700.

What type of regs ARE there on buying an entire drum and then reselling it? Do you need a special Federal permit through the ATFE?

There are no legal regulations on doing so as far as I know. However you will probably have some trouble finding any reputable supplier that will sell barrel quantities to an unknown person for resale purposes. One guy who did so went to jail for a while for selling aluminum with the general impression that it would be used to make illegal salutes. Even having an ATFE license wouldn't save you from legal ramifications of that unless every person you sold it to also had a license.

So, since he "knew" that it was going to be used for illegal purposes, he went to the pokey. That would explain why every online dealer who isn't on Ebay states very clearly on their website that if you're buying it for illegal reasons, you need to go somewhere else. I would love to get into selling it for a FAIR price, but I just don't know if the hoops you would need to jump through would make it worth my while.

You can't buy it from the wholesalers without an ATFE (the suppliers rule, not the ATFE's). If the supplier thinks you may be breaking down the drum and reselling to those without an ATFE, they will refuse to do business with you in the future,

I got my German dark for $15/lb. You can only get a pound but its lasted me a while since I only use it for flash and I barely use my flash.

You wouldn't happen to know the ATFE Form number, would you?
