Delay composition

Hello all, I was just looking for a good delay composition that does not contain boron or zirconium. This will be used in Stinger Missiles. Thank for all your time and help.

Woah! Those must be some exotic delay comps. Where did you see those formula?

I use either a modified Chrysanthemum of Mystery or Winokur 39.

COM:

Charcoal Airfloat 50

Potassium Nitrate 45

Sulfur 5

Dextrin +6

Win39:

Potassium Nitrate 51

Charcoal Airfloat 19

Antimony Trisulfide, Chinese needle 12

Aluminum, atom, spher, 120-325 mesh, 20 micron 8

Barium Carbonate 5

Dextrin 5

Does the First one you listed actually burn slowly? It looks (By the formula, similar to regular black powder) like it would burn fast. I have never made delay comp, so I don't know obviously, but I'm just asking. And thank you for posting this thread, I was curious about this as well.

Caleb,

It's heavily over-fueled, so it burns quite slowly, leaving a nice charcoal streamer effect.

How do you see 50 Charcoal and 45 KNO3 as close to 75 KNO3 15 Charcoal? I have found some delay comps that use coarser charcoal for it to burn slower, I find this to clog up tubes a bit (might just be my charcoal) but either way I'd go for one with airfloat charcoal and KNO3 for cheapness and ease.

Thank you for all of your help so far. But i have one question with COM delay composition, should it be milled or hand mixed?

I would mill it, its slow enough as it is. Of course, its going to require some experimentation to get the right delay.

The modified Chrysanthemum of Mystery should be ball milled for 3hrs, or however long it takes your particular mill to grind as finely as possible.

Heh heh guess crappy garden centre kno3 has some uses, the one i ordered makes pretty slow burning BP. I just use it for delay in rockets and in some charcoal stars. Nice and easy without requiring those hard t find exotic chems!
