WarezWally Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 A few months ago I purchased a quantity of sulphuric acid (10L) and so far I haven't really used much of it which wouldn't normally bother me as I don't mind stockpiling hard to find chemicals. I am keeping it in the original HDPE container in the garage which stays nice and cool, should I be concerned about long term storage (few years)? It is properly sealed. On a side note, because poring it out the the large (and heavy) container is difficult I decanted some into a lab bottle (the ones with graduations, blue cap). When I did this it was a bit cloudy, now it has gone clear and there seems to be a small amount of sediment in the bottom which doesn't move. I have a feeling it is some plastic off the original container. Thoughts?
Sylar Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Probably just technical quality sulfuric acid.Small organic impurities are not unheard off in technical H2SO4, though can be easily removed by decanting after letting them fall out. Possibly some catalyst mesh which had lost the V2O5 coating due to too high operating temperature or something like that.
