firetech Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 You're going to want to use a bombette for starters. Check the skylighter article on horsetail rockets. For a silver streamer you're going to want either a charcoal streamer with a high metal content or an actual silver streamer comp. 50/50 perc/al with 25% coarse al (more for slower, less for faster) bound with dextrin and wheate paste should do the trick to be simple.
Ventsi Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 Horsetail- A can shell with the burst on one side and long burning stars on the other. Skylighter has a good tutorial on the D1 glitter rocket page. Another Q'n, is there any formula I could use such as slow gold , without FeTi or Ti? I was thinking some TT/Spider with some 100mesh charcoal and perhaps spherical aluminum. Something full, but rough and real long hanging. Would a combination of Fe and Al do the trick?
Mumbles Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 You can replace the Ti with coarse flake Al. I replaced half of the Ti with the flake Al, and it really hangs up there. That might be another idea for a silver tail, but it certainly doesn't dry very fast.
Ventsi Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 When you say coarse, do you mean 40-100 mesh coarse, or 100-200 mesh coarse? Actually I made an effect that's pretty close to what I'm looking for by adding 15% Bright Al to Tiger Tail. Silly me... Long lasting and shimmery. I might just use that one.
Mumbles Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 I mean -20 coarse, German #41813. You can try whatever you want though. I would expect something finer to transition from silver to charcoal tail underneath, where as the really coarse stuff stays around as long or longer than the charcoal backdrop
Arthur Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 Horsetail is a tubular bombette insert that rises and then puts stars out of one end. the Veline system when wet with acetone forms instant stars, -they are ready to fire in an hour! (Suppose you could make most stars with parlon/pvc into acetone bound stars if you really needed same day stars) 1
Mumbles Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 What exactly are you guys talking about when using the term bombette? I think I may be envisioning the wrong thing.
Twotails Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 i've been experimenting with a formula, that seems it would work here, the stars dry fast, and can be primed all in one swoop with BP, or maby KP.(Adaptation of Kimro(?) star) (Dosen't add up to 100%, but works fine) Bamboo charcoal (air float) 34 Potassium Perchlorate 30Potassium Nitrate 29FerroTitanium, 40-325 mesh 25Sulfur 6Redgum 63 micron aluminum 5-325 atomized aluminum 5 bind with Acetone or alcohol. Video of a 1/2in star burning on the ground. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EALt30XUNyY Hope that helps.
andyboy Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 I used the simplest formula in my early days and it's still my favourite: White Star #1Potassium Nitrate.................................58Aluminum..........................................40Dextrin...........................................2 Might want to throw in some boric acid there as well. I ball-milled the Kno3 with the dextrin and just stirred in the Al-powder -325 atomised. Mixed with water and cut the stars. It is possible to roll them but the al is a bit coarse and make for ugly stars. Make the stars about 1X1 cm's. They burn rather slow but leave a thick nice tail.
