Notice how he said it is green. I have done this myself and I got the nice green product as well before I filtered it. I have pics on my site but it looks like I used too much bandwidth so it is down now.

Thanks for the link teknix. Now I also have black and brown crap in the jar. Theres a large blob sticking to the two nails I'm using in there. Overall this is going quite well. It looks like I am getting a lot of product.

I got bored the other day while procrastinating for a final exam(it was ochem, I ended up with a 93% on that final , class ave was 40 something.A+(to bad A gives the same gpa as A+))

I shoved about 50 nails through the lid of a margarine tub, connected about half to positive and half to negative. Put in a dilute solution of salt. A dilute salt solution is good because I have had these cells boil with high salt concentrations. I placed the cell in a sink of cold water turned it on at 12V (max 8A), left it like that for ~36h, after that time all the anodes had dissolved. I am currently washing the iron oxide of salt solution, looks a good 50g or so. It was black, but some peroxide on a sample turned it normal colour, on such a big batch the ammount of peroxide that would be needed is a waste, so I will just oven dry after.

A real easy way is taking steel wool and adding it to HCl, then adding NaOH.. Let it sit for a day, take it out, and put it in the oven to dry, and turn from iron hydroxide to iron oxide.. I've done it many times..

It should be noted that you should wait for the steel to react with the HCl before adding any NaOH. Filtering out all the carbon and other crap would probably also be good before adding any NaOH.
