Aluminum Milling Media

Spheres do pose a more significant production problem, as melting is required. However, cylinders should be just as easy to cut as cubes, assuming starting from round stock, vs square stock. An electric saw would make short work of it. The fact that they are aluminum will make it even easier as any standard metal blade should easily take care of it using some cutting oil.

 

I was just thinking that the most probable impact would be somewhere between a full corner shot, and a full face shot, somewhat of a "pinch" or "roll" across the face over the granules, something like a see-saw. Try to drop a cube on something solid hitting it with the corner or edge. The 90 degree angle is more likely for it to squirt out the side. Try doing it with a sphere or cylinder, much more area around the impact area to help contain blow, and at least deliver partial impact. My main argument point was that the force of the impact is distributed across the whole surface of the cube, where as it happens in a linear line or point with a cylinder or sphere respectively. An "edge" or "corner" shot would deliver the same theoretical blow as a cylinder or sphere. The MUCH higher probability of these types of impacts happening with cylindrical or spherical media make me think they would be significantly more efficient. The loss of mass would easily be overcome with all the additional high energy impacts it would create.

I tried milling some charcoal today. It was an airfloat powder in about 10 minutes. I then combined the shitty pine charcoal with some KNO3 and S, and milled it for about 2 hours. A one gram pile of the resulting powder burned in .4 seconds. Not bad for pine, but pretty slow overall. Its roughly comparable to BP milled with brass cylinders for the same length of time. I'll try some red alder next time.

 

I'm starting to think that the mass of the media isn't as important as it is commonly thought to be. As long as the media is heavy enough to crush the composition, it should work fine.
