Which would be the best paper to use for this... I can get regular printer paper (the plain standard white sheets) and also colored sheets... But what would be the best for this application...

At the PAT shoot last weekend the gentleman said that it would leave a small ammount of chimeny... what would be something I could get at a wal-mart or Sav-on that would be the best for this type of application... I am looking for the best paper for this application... zero chimney... or would it not really matter all that much...

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by chimney.

You want something that burns away with the lance composition. I've used about 3-4 turns of 35lb kraft paper. There shouldn't be any reason you cant use computer paper or really newspaper or something like that. I dry rolled them and painted on a small portion of glue to seal the ends down. They seemed to work just fine, but I also used waterfall comp so if there were embers falling off I never would have known.

I think he's referring to the small amount ash created by unburned clay binder that would surround the flame envelope and limit the amount of light radiating to the sides. Like Mumbles said, if the comp is burning hot enough (metal fuels), you likely won't notice any ill effect. Virgin (or recyled) Kraft would probably be best if trying to avoid the clay. WalMart has recycled 30lb in the packing supplies section.

Thanks for the replies... Yeah I was talking about the ash that forms at the end like a cigarette... Thanks for the ideas... I saw the 30lb craft paper last night at Wal-Mart... Sad when you walk around a store looking for tools to start doing pyro...

Would color paper hurt or would it be the same as regular computer paper... Wouldn't be a bad idea to have colored coded tubes to match the color the compound will burn... thoughts?

Colored paper should work fine.

I assume you mean Christmas Wrapping paper, or similar?

What little "color pollution" it may cause, from whatever ingredients are in the paper to give it its color, should be insignificant.

I was talking about the colored copy paper in the Wal-Mart paper aisle... has most of the colors all bundled together... it was right next to the plain white paper... same wieght and what not... didn't think it would matter much...

In that case it shouldn't make any difference at all.

And a good idea, too.

I have a gross of Blue lances I bought at Mason City. They're in blue-colored tubes so I'll never have to burn one just to see what color it is. ;)

Alright then that settles it... To Wal-Mart after I get off work... Now I just hope that the ceramic store here in town has the materials that I need to fill em full of the good stuff...

Also... I had another idea... If you were to make color changing lances make the first color the color of the tube... then at Wal-Mart they sell little round stickers that are also colored... They had all the same colors the paper bundle had... Just stick one of those on the bottom where your clay plug is and you know what color the color changing effect will be...

Just some ideas...

Well bad news... The Ceramic store that I went to uses all liquids and didn't even have the right things that I needed... I went to the Pharmacy to see if they could get the things I need... I am awaiting a call from them...
