evil_lurker Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Does anyone know of a manufacturer that sells pre-fabricated hydraulic press powder corning dies? I've UTFSE to no avail on yahoo, this site, and others and all I have been able to come up with is this: http://fogoforum.us/powderdie.php I have so many irons in the fire right now with other projects I don't have the time to expend on creating one and then fine tuning it.

Seeing as you have the idea, there is not really anything to making one. Buy some 3"ID PVC or ABS pipe, and a few gear (pipe/hose) clamps. If you don't want to cast resin, find a plastic supplier (they are everywhere) and buy some 3" round stock...PVC,nylon or UHMW polyethylene will work. If you can't do that, then get a holesaw and make the piston from plywood discs glued together. You don't really have to make a split pipe die. For removal I just press the puck into a short pc of the same pipe that has been split.
Mumbles Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 About the closest you'll get to pre-fabricated are commercial comet pumps. These will tend to run a bit pricy for their use as BP puck presses. However when you advance they will make lovely comet presses. If you go this route, do yourself a favor and get one that will work with commonly available tubing so you can actually make comets in the future. Depending on how much you want to press I'd go no smaller than 2.5" It will allow you to use around 70g of BP to 1.7 density. http://www.wolterpyrotools.com/?page=catg&cat=stars It is obviously significantly cheaper to make one. Perhaps someone will even volunteer to make a batch of them and sell them here.

I'm pretty sure they got some bar stock in there somewhere.
tentacles Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Depending on if Bonny can get more of those gorgeous 3" PVC rod ends, I was planning on turning them to a round 3" (they are actually 3.014 or something) and selling/trading them. It will be a buy your own pipe sort of deal, as I don't have any 3" lying around and it's expensive up here.

I think there is still quite a few pcs available...
