ST1DinOH Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 the vid calls this effect "dragon eggs" but it clearly is not. no crackling whatsoever. all that aside i'd love to know how to make this effect and what comp formula to look it up as. i'm thinking tiger tail maybe? it would realy help if there were an effects database with pics and vids of the different comps and how they burn... would stop noobs such as myself from asking these sorts of questions.
oskarchem Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 I think it is just TT to color, and all quickmatched together for the fast launch.
ST1DinOH Posted March 6, 2008 Author Posted March 6, 2008 I think it is just TT to color, and all quickmatched together for the fast launch.yeah the vid description calls it a cake, so i'm sure it's a short little fan with a ton of rows (definatley 1.3) all setup to zip out quick. i'm just wondering what the comp was that gives the effect on the way up. now assuming this is tigertail comp would i just simply roll out some color stars in a star roller, then coat them in TT comp in the same roller?
NightHawkInLight Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 now assuming this is tigertail comp would i just simply roll out some color stars in a star roller, then coat them in TT comp in the same roller? I imagine that would work fine. They appear nothing more to me than TT with a colored core. Perhaps different than TT but it would yield a near identical effect.
ST1DinOH Posted March 6, 2008 Author Posted March 6, 2008 thanks guys...i appreciate it. i'll be adding this to my list of projects i would like to do someday.
TheSidewinder Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 (edited) That was a hell of a nice cake, however it was made. I'd agree with TT to color being what it is. Sure no crackle there. It looked like they used different color cores, too, but maybe that was the lighting. STD, color change stars not very tough to do. A little detailed, but not hard. Make it your next project. Then show us pics! Edited March 6, 2008 by TheSidewinder

Then show us pics! well let me make sure i know the concept so i don't have tomake another thread later... basicly i just roll out a bunch of smaller colored stars in a star roller, color pearls basicly, once they've picked up all the comp (possibly mist the drum once just to make sure), then dump the TT comp into the star roller...and over coat the color pearls with it. or do i need to use a different comp to prime/insulate the color peals before the TT? anything in the comp mix for TT that i should be carfull of for interaction purposes?
TheSidewinder Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Yes, that's basically it. You roll color comp on the cores first. (It's aesthetically important that they all be the same size when this step is done.) Some say to let the first layer dry before adding the second, but I've also heard people say they do it all at once. Make the layers the same thickness. 1/4" to 3/8" each I'd guess. You shouldn't need any prime between the layers for ignition. By the time the burn front gets there, it should be plenty hot. If you're using a hard-lighting metallic inner formula and relatively cold-burning organic outer formula, you might need one. I'm just not sure. You do have to check for chemical incompatability in your formulas, yes. Just pick two that are compatible. Non-compatible formulas could be seperated by the right inter-layer prime I think, but why bother. You'll have enough time sunk into it already. Good luck.
GalFisk Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 I know from someone elses experience that Chrys#8 won't ignite emerald green in a color changing star, so make sure your TT can ignite the color core, or use a layer of prime in between.
ST1DinOH Posted March 7, 2008 Author Posted March 7, 2008 ok...another silly question. how the hell is that thing fused? it's firing too fast for fast visco, and it doesn't all go skyward in a second like you'd think QM or SM would behave... are they chaining the lift gasses? like do they just port the small tubes together so the lift from each one fires the next? or is there some sort of delay in between like a short length of BM... i've always wondered how the very vast zippers get thier speed without sending it all up at once as i'd imagine QM would do.
TheSidewinder Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 I looked at it a few more times. I'm pretty sure that's a commercial product. And if so, there's a couple ways to do it. One is with that really quick 2-strand Chinese paper fuse, used to ignite a stub of match on each tube. If you've ever taken apart a "Fireworks Fiesta" (108-shot or so z-cake, i think the name's right) the back couple rows are fused that way.
oskarchem Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 That's what I think it is because that crap is really, really fast.

If you've ever taken apart a "Fireworks Fiesta" (108-shot or so z-cake, i think the name's right) the back couple rows are fused that way. you just mentioned my favorite cake in the whole wide world. i love fireworks fiestas. best damn 200 gram ever made...ever. so yeah, i have an idea for making a big zipper with tiger tail stars, and i sure as hell dont want to make a zipper carcas from scratch...that would drive me insane. i may attempt to harvest a few spent zipper caracses after the many demo's i'll be attending, but i still don't have any idea how i'd get that fuse to work. if they are using that method it shouldn't be to complicated to re-load them...what you just explained sounds very reasonable. much less complicated than i had thought. for some reason i was invisioning loose powder trains in rows or something to that effect. but that wouldn't make any sense at all. i'll look for a bigger bore zipper if i can find one, maybe even tie two carcases together into a long one. would be kinda neat to build something like that, but i'd imagine it's quite a tedious endevor fusing up 600-1000 little tubes. loading them wouldn't be too bad once i found a good measured scoop to use for each tubes lift...and just dropping a double effect star in each hole is easy...but fusing it and plugging each hole with a paper cap will take days. probably a good soild week of work for about 20-30 seconds of pyro but hey...thats the nature of the beast we all love so much.
TheSidewinder Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 you just mentioned my favorite cake in the whole wide world. i love fireworks fiestas. best damn 200 gram ever made...ever.Agreed! That cake, taken apart, a few used Shogun Sky Bomb tubes, and some pre-cut Visco, are the ingredients for what I call my "White Trash Fireworks". Take apart Fireworks Fiesta. Every single tube in it. Pull out their fusing CAREFULLY. You should end up with 108 single-shot pre-loaded mini-mortars, each with a now-empty but undamaged fuse hole. Take a used Sky Bomb tube. It has a plastic base so it stands nice and sturdy. Now, this is the only part that takes more than 30 seconds to do. Find a little piece of wood. Square is best. It has to drop flat to the bottom of the Sky Bomb tube, otherwise the FF tube's fuse hole will be even with the plastic base and you want it hel up about 1/2" higher than that. Take a Fireworks Fiesta tube and note exactly where the fuse hole is. Drop it inside the used Sky Bomb tube. It fits perfectly. Now mark the spot on the outside of the Sky Bomb tube that corresponds to the fuse hole of the inner Fireworks Fiesta tube. TAKE OUT THE FIREWORKS FIESTA TUBE. lol... Drill a hole at that spot. 1/4" should do nicely. Don't make it TOO big. Drop Fireworks Fiesta tube back inside Sky Bomb and make sure it all lines up. Since the FF tubes are all fused at the same height, you only have to line up the fuse holes as you drop it in. Now, pre-cut a bunch (108? ) of pieces of visco. Now the fun begins. Drop FF tube into SB tube, insert Visco thru hole into FF tube (should be a snug fit IF you took the original fusing material out CAREFULLY. Light fuse, retire, repeat. And repeat, and repeat, and repeat...... A lot of fun for very little cash, given how cheaply you can get a Fireworks Fiesta for these days.

A lot of fun for very little cash, given how cheaply you can get a Fireworks Fiesta for these days. holy crap... thats a ton of work for some single shot comets...but i bet they are fun to play around with. you wanna have fun with some of thoes set two of them off at a time but you face the fuse side twords each other. this way thet start off shooting opposite each other. i've got a tutorial on pyrouniverse if you are interested. but its simple...just cut a piece of sticky just long enough to go from fuse to fuse. you just slide the fireworks fiesta fuse into on end of the sticky match, then slide the 2nd firework fiestas fuse into the other end of the sticky. you can either slide a seperate length of vico in with one of the FF fuses, or do what i do... slip an e-match right into the SM powder train. when you hit that cue it'll fry both fuses on each fiesta and they'll fire against each other. another nice thing to do with any fan, is angle them twords each other and get them far apart. you want to tilt it so that the one extreame of the fan is shooting at the lowest possible safe angle for your site, the other extreame of each row should point almost straight vertical. whne you light them both at once they shoot twords each other then go skyward, the back twords each other again... cool effect. one last thing... angle the FF to shoot the rows away from you, and then agle the cake so that it shoots almost straight up at one extreme. kinda like setting it on a hill going down and away from you and so that you are looking at the long side. the effect is cool the shots will climb and fall up and down the sky going away from you. lol i love these cakes. we've been doing all sorts of stuff with thoes little power houses. a case of them in opposing pairs spread out in a front looks amazing.
TheSidewinder Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 Actually, it was VERY little work at all. The cake came apart easily and the fusing wasn't all THAT fragile. It took no more than a half-hour to do. Took damn near that long to type up my description here! And I see you're a tinkerer with Class C, just like I once was. M
justanotherpyro Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Messing around with class C is still fun, even though I have been spoiled by 3" 4" and soon 6" shells. One 2" festival ball shell isn't all that great 3 boxes in less than 5 seconds sure as hell is and the crowds usually agree.

M oh yeah...untill about a month ago it;s all i've known for 10 years. we do big wholesale buys in groups, shoot it all off rafts using e-fire (wireless). this year we expect 400 people, a band, full bar, kegs, a few k worth of 1.4 and hopefully we can roast a hog... if not its all about the burgers and dogs. i love 1.4 and 1.3 (what little ive had) but making it is so much more rewarding. then again fuseing cases of 500 rams on quick match is a hell of a good time too

M NW ohio and our guest rooms are sold at sporting goods stores, they come in long bags along with poles and steaks. hey if you can't make the show we are hiring a videographer again this year so i'll have the whole show on a good quality cam. if you want to see the last couple years shows here's some links. 2006 http://fireworks.agprojects.net/st1dinoh/July%201%202006.wmv^paid a videographer for this vid...had about 300 people there and it was amazing 2007 ^horrible video shot by my friend, smaller show, less people. we shoot big shows every other year, last year was the small one, this year is going to be the big one. we've got a stripped down pontoon boat frame, and 2 8x8 rafts we made. each raft has 6 55 gal drums keeping them afloat. this year we are going to flank the pontoon boat with the two rafts. it's gonna take at least 5 36 cue wireless systems to accomplish it all, possibly a 6th one to fire cues of close prox and small diameter stuff on the shore. trying to get some mine fronts setup along the shore to shock the shit out of everyone (aka "the brown note") gonna end the show with 600 salutes in 20 seconds (120 5 shot salute candles) coming from fanned racks. should be somewhat similar to the pgi 07 finale, but on a smaller scale.
TheSidewinder Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 LOL!!! Well, this year the finances (and gas prices) are dictating that I stay very close to home, but who knows what the future may bring. I may win the lottery. (I can hope anyway.) And I'm too old to be sleeping on the ground. If I managed to get there, I'd be staying in a local State Park or Forest campground with this:

frogy Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 I'm in NE Ohio... I may be able to come down for the show. I could throw together some 3" shells , all the bigger I have right now... I'm lacking larger mortars and casings.
