Arthur Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Looking at a formulation that includes "Naphthol Pitch" does anyone know if it is available and what is it now called, google is not helping at the moment.
asilentbob Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Essentially tar. Asphalt might be a good replacement... What kind of composition is it... Smoke? Most high MP hydrocarbons can make some black smoke... Smoke mix + naphthalene will do some black it color... Edit: Rubber, like just plain old black rubber might be good aswell.
Arthur Posted March 1, 2008 Author Posted March 1, 2008 Actually it's for non-mercury snakes as in COPAE p121 &pp. I need to find a reliable source of something that works whatever it is. Naphthol pitch was a by-product from extracting B-naphthol from coal tar. I can't find a coal tar refiner in the UK.
TheSidewinder Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 Is that the same as Asphaltum, or Gilsonite? It's available here. I have a pound of it.
Frozentech Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 Weingart suggests that if Naphthol pitch is not available, to substitute "4 parts roofing pitch mixed with 6 parts Syrian asphalt which has been reduced to a fine powder when cold". Gilsonite is the nearest material I can think of that's fairly available.
Arthur Posted March 2, 2008 Author Posted March 2, 2008 Can anyone offer me a supply or supplier for Gilsonite or Weingart's alternatives -Roofing pitch I can get but where does "Syrian Ashphalt "come from in trade
