bombboy218 Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 I wanted to know if someone had a copy of Tom Perigrins book of Introductory Practical Pyrotechics that they are done using and are willing to sell it to me e mail me at Hoppyfamly218@yahoo.com
KAP Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 Go to american fireworks news and look at the best of AFN series, also David Blesser has a very good book on star production for the beginner. There are books on fountains there as well, look into it, they are alot of fun and easy to make.
Mumbles Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 I would actually suggest IPP over the others for a first book. It is more all inclusive, and details many basic devices and safety well.
TheSidewinder Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 that's what I recommended when bb218 and I enchanged PM's. For a "true beginner" it's one of the best. Perhaps THE best. I know it's a chunk of money, but it's well worth it.
Frozentech Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 I agree that it's an excellent beginner's book, and a nice read for any pyro. One caution though... On page 55 of IPP there is a lance comp listed as McLain Violet which was a learning experience ! This comp is how I learned that Ammonium perchlorate *will* react with Magnalium. I recommend beginners avoid this one comp.
marks265 Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Yep, been there done that. Makes a hell of hand warmer. I packed it all up and got it the hell out of the shop and then figured out what went wrong. Nothing ignited. I was making some lances and that is when things warmed up a bit. With thin walled homemade tubing it was most noticable.
Frozentech Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Yep, been there done that. Makes a hell of hand warmer. I packed it all up and got it the hell out of the shop and then figured out what went wrong. Nothing ignited. I was making some lances and that is when things warmed up a bit. With thin walled homemade tubing it was most noticable. Same exact scenario. I had mixed the comp, wearing a brand new respirator with organic vapor cartridges, so I didn't smell anything. I had actually packed all my home rolled lance tubes, then removed my gloves and mask. The smell was like sticking your face in a dirty cat litter box I picked up my lance tubes and like you said, instant hand warmer, in fact, too hot to hold on to for more than a couple seconds, I grabbed the whole batch on a cookie sheet and put them outside in a safe spot, with a jury-rigged roof over them to dry ( it was raining lightly ). They actually dried completely in less than an hour thanks to the internal heat, with a little bit of spalling and some loose comp pushing out kind of like those "snake" fireworks. As soon as they dried they cooled down. I burnt them all that night, not wanting to trust them in storage (wasn't sure about ammonium/ MgAl / CuO after that reaction ). They worked very nicely, a beautiful wine color. http://www.apcforum.net/files/violetlance2.jpg
TheSidewinder Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Your experience is the major reason I got a respirator that *DOES NOT* filter Ammonia. If I get a reaction I'll be the first to know it. It blocks everything ELSE that should be filtered out, though.
