Arthur Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 Looking for wisdom on pyrotechnic candles that discharge flakes that look like falling or blowing snow. Have heard mention of Metaldehyde and Hexamine as one component, possibly causing something to sublime or burn to a flaky ash. Apparently these are used in the movie industry.
GalFisk Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 I found this text in "Military and civilian Pyrotechnics" (which I found here: http://pyrobin.com/files/ed.pdf):"Snow cones are mainly fine magnesium powder with some other fuel and a small amount of oxidizing agent. The powder burns quickly, producing a shower of magnesium oxide that slowly settles in the room—much to the delight of the housewife and mother!"
Mumbles Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Are you looking at something like that, as in white ash type of discharge, or something along the lines of metal sparks that give the illusion of a show shower? I can provide some information from the latter if you're interested.
Arthur Posted January 28, 2008 Author Posted January 28, 2008 The white ash flake discharge sounds exactly what is needed. Thanks the info is good but the link doesn't work for me.
Mumbles Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 I believe I fixed the link. I didn't try it, but a parenthesis got placed into the link. It happens when the board automatically parses the address into a link. Any following characters, such as the parenthesis and colon are included, and will obviously change the link.
TheSidewinder Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Link works now. I'm viewing it at the moment. Looks good. Written by Ellern in 1968.
Arthur Posted January 28, 2008 Author Posted January 28, 2008 Brilliant thanks for doing that! Mumbles do you want those files?
Mumbles Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 If you're talking about Ellern, I already have it. The file itself was actually leaked and modified from APC originally. There used to be a section for sharing electronic documents. A member here OCRed the scan (which was originally by Polverone of Science Madness), and put it up here with a notice of where it came from, blah blah blah. This was removed and freely distributed elsewhere obviously. I know where the typos were left to be able to identify it. Or were you discussing some other files, such as those with the metaldehyde and hexamine reference? If I could even get metaldehyde I'd have other uses for it though.
